Prague to Commemorate Victims of University Shooting with Memorial

A temporary memorial for the victims of the December attack at the Faculty of Arts will be unveiled on Jan Palach Square.

The focal point is a three-meter-high stone object.

The opening ceremony on June 21, 2024, will feature speeches from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Eva Leheฤkovรก, the Rector of Charles University, Milena Krรกlรญฤkovรก, the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda, and the Mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radomฤ›ล™skรก.

Eva Leheฤkovรก expressed the need to honor those lost in the attack, emphasizing the importance of providing a place for the public to pay their respects.

The memorial will be a crude sandstone monolith from Vyhnรกnov quarries, designed by Vojtฤ›ch Adamec and placed by architect Vojtฤ›ch Krรกlรญฤek.

This temporary memorial will be available until a permanent one is created based on suggestions from the academic community and victimsโ€™ families.

Proposals will be reviewed by a working group of representatives from the affected community, families, academics, architects, and experts. Vice-Dean Andrea Hudรกkovรก noted the importance of taking time to create a respectful and permanent memorial.

Additionally, Charles University will host a seminar on June 21 to discuss the past six months and future plans for resilience and safety.
