Prague to Commemorate Victims of University Shooting with Memorial

A temporary memorial for the victims of the December attack at the Faculty of Arts will be unveiled on Jan Palach Square.

The focal point is a three-meter-high stone object.

The opening ceremony on June 21, 2024, will feature speeches from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Eva Lehečková, the Rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková, the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda, and the Mayor of Prague 1, Terezie Radoměřská.

Eva Lehečková expressed the need to honor those lost in the attack, emphasizing the importance of providing a place for the public to pay their respects.

The memorial will be a crude sandstone monolith from Vyhnánov quarries, designed by Vojtěch Adamec and placed by architect Vojtěch Králíček.

This temporary memorial will be available until a permanent one is created based on suggestions from the academic community and victims’ families.

Proposals will be reviewed by a working group of representatives from the affected community, families, academics, architects, and experts. Vice-Dean Andrea Hudáková noted the importance of taking time to create a respectful and permanent memorial.

Additionally, Charles University will host a seminar on June 21 to discuss the past six months and future plans for resilience and safety.
