St. Nicholas Day in Prague: Where to Go and How the Tradition Works Today

Prague Morning

Families across Prague are preparing for the arrival of St. Nicholas (Mikuláš), devils and angels on Friday, December 5.

The trio appears each year on the eve of St. Nicholas Day, a tradition rooted in Central Europe and shaped by centuries of folklore. From afternoon walks through historic squares to community events in city districts, the celebration remains one of the biggest moments of Advent.

Although St. Nicholas is marked on December 6, the Czech custom unfolds the night before. In earlier liturgical calendars, the new day began at sunset, which is why the visits take place on December 5. The practice goes back to the story of Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century bishop known for helping the poor in what is now Turkey.

Today, St. Nicholas does not arrive alone. The angel and the devil complete the group, representing reward and warning—a balance that shaped the tradition for generations. Parents in Prague often look for events that keep the atmosphere friendly rather than frightening, and many districts now organize their own gentle version.

Where to See St. Nicholas in Prague

The largest gatherings usually form in the historic center. Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square draw groups in detailed costumes, and Old Town Square will host the city’s biggest St. Nicholas meeting from 4 p.m., complete with a small stage and gifts for children. Families often encounter Nicholas groups at busy transport points as well—entrances to malls and metro hubs such as Anděl, Dejvická or I. P. Pavlova are common spots.

St. Nicholas at Prague Zoo – December 5, 10:00–16:00

Throughout the day, St. Nicholas, an angel and a devil will walk through the zoo, meeting children and giving out small gifts. At 3 p.m., a guided encounter in Darwin’s Crater will introduce visitors to the zoo’s bear-like devils.

Lighting of the Kampa Tree – December 5, from 16:30

Kampa Square under Charles Bridge will once again host the lighting of its Christmas tree alongside the St. Nicholas visit. Hot drinks, firemen’s sausages and the Lesser Town nativity scene are part of the program.

St. Nicholas Forest – December 5, 16:00–19:00

In Prague 9, a forest path near the DDM scout clubhouse at Větrušická 842 turns into a St. Nicholas trail. Children search for the “lost” Nicholas and meet devils, angels and elves along the way. Completing simple tasks leads to a reward at the end.

St. Nicholas Train – December 6, 14:30–18:30

A historic train will run from Prague through Jarov to Vrané nad Vltavou and back. St. Nicholas, the angel and the devil will move through the carriages during the journey, greeting children on board.
