Architects Present Concepts for New Prague's Highway Bridge
Prague Morning
The competition to design the new highway bridge over the Vltava River in Prague’s Suchdol district has reached a key milestone with the publication of five shortlisted proposals.
This bridge is intended to improve traffic flow around the city.
On Monday, the Czech Chamber of Architects showcased the winning submissions on their website, offering the public a glimpse of what could soon become a major infrastructural landmark.
The top prize went to the collaboration between Stráský, Hustý a partneři and Studio acht.
The jury praised this design for its minimal environmental footprint, as it avoids placing any piers within the protected valley area—a critical factor in preserving the local landscape.
In second place, the jury awarded the design by Valbek, which takes a traditional approach. This concept was commended for its simplicity and reliability, fitting seamlessly into the valley’s natural contours.
The third prize was granted to COWI Czech Republic, whose design was noted for both its architectural quality and the potential for rapid construction—an important advantage for managing project timelines.
Additionally, a design by 2T engineering in partnership with Top Con Servis was recognized for offering generous pedestrian and cyclist paths. Their proposal includes footbridges connecting different parts of the structure, allowing users to enjoy views of the surrounding landscape.
The final contender is a proposal from ov architekti and V – CON, completing the selection from which the final bridge design will be chosen.
