Czech Republic Sees Highest Jump in Egg Prices Across the EU

Egg prices in Czechia rose faster than anywhere else in the European Union, according to new data from Eurostat. In March 2025, the country recorded a staggering 46% year-on-year increase, the highest across the bloc. By contrast, Slovakia and Hungary also reported high increases—29.8% and 26.1% respectively—but remained well below Czechia’s spike. On the opposite end, the Netherlands saw a 3.6% drop in egg prices, followed by Luxembourg (-3.2%) and Greece (-2%). The data highlights ongoing inflationary pressures in the food sector, although 2025’s growth has so far remained below the extremes of previous years. In January and February, egg prices in the EU rose by 3.4% and 4.1%, respectively, compared to the same months in 2024. These modest increases pale in comparison to the sharp hikes recorded in 2022 and 2023. For instance, in February 2023, egg prices jumped 31.2% year-on-year. Mazanec and Beránek: Timeless Czech Easter Traditions

Baked goods in some form or other are staples of Easter traditions across Europe. The Hungarians have fonott kalacs; Italians have colomba pasquale, and the English have their hot-cross buns. Here in the Czech Republic, the two classic Easter baked goods are mazanec and beránek. Apart from sharing some connections to other European customs, these two foods can lay claim to centuries of tradition. Long-lasting food Mazanec is a sweet, though not cloyingly so, bread filled with raisins and often topped with almonds. Beránek is a cake baked in the shape of a lamb. Many commercial varieties are covered in chocolate. The earliest evidence of baking mazanec apparently goes back to the 15th century. The noted Czech writer Magdalena Dobromila Rettigová later included a recipe in her popular cookbook, Domací kuchařka, (a Household Cookery Book). Fast Food Chain Popeyes to Open Ten New Restaurants in Czechia

The American fast-food chain Popeyes is accelerating its expansion in the Czech Republic, announcing plans to open ten new locations across the country in 2025. While continuing to strengthen its presence in Prague, the brand will move into new territories, with branches confirmed for Brno, Pardubice, and Pilsen. “In most cases, these will be restaurants located in shopping centers. This year, we may also launch a drive-thru and a highway stop,” said Jiří Petrovič, Chief Development Officer for Popeyes in Czechia, Poland, and Romania. “I won’t disclose more details yet, as some sites are still under construction. Prague’s Easter Markets Are Back — But Prices Are Hard to Swallow

The Easter markets have returned to Prague, filling the city’s main squares with food stalls, live music, and clusters of tourists snapping photos under blooming trees. While the markets remain a seasonal tradition for locals, many are finding them harder to enjoy — not because of the crowds, but because of the prices. What used to be an affordable afternoon out now feels more like a splurge, with even simple snacks reaching restaurant-level costs. At Old Town Square, the offerings are familiar: roasted ham, trdelník, and langoš. But the price tags have shifted. From Vršovice to Karlín – Joy Bakery Opens Second Location

Known for its handcrafted bread and pastries made with locally-sourced ingredients and no additives, Joy Bakery continues to grow while staying true to its philosophy of quality, authenticity… and joy. The original shop in Vršovice was described by the co-owner Liudmila as “a small baby” that grew into “a nice teenager saying, ‘I want to be free and go out.'” This growth prompted the search for a new location. The 10th edition of the Beer and Burger (‘Pivo a Burger’) Festival will return to Karlínské náměstí on May 18! A total of 25 burger stands will be operating throughout the day, including many of the Czech favorite food trucks and burger joints. Food Prices in Czechia Have Risen by 26% in Three Years

Food and non-alcoholic beverage prices in Czechia have surged by 26.4% over the past three years, aligning closely with the EU average of 26.9%. While this increase is substantial, food prices have also climbed sharply across the European Union. In terms of the pace of price hikes, Czechia ranks 13th among EU nations. However, recent data from Eurostat suggests that in short-term comparisons—year-on-year or month-to-month—the situation in Czechia is less favorable. “The most relevant comparison is the three-year period from January 2022 to January 2024, as food prices began to spike dramatically in early 2022,” said Miroslav Novák, an analyst at Akcenta. Czechia Follows EU Trend, But Some Items Are Cheaper Abroad Novák notes that in this three-year perspective, Czechia does not stand out negatively, despite the 26.4% price surge. Easter Treats to Cost More as Chocolate and Egg Prices Surge

Easter celebrations will come with a higher price tag this year, as chocolate treats and eggs see sharp price increases. According to an analysis by Kupi.cz, the cost of Easter chocolates has risen by as much as 20% compared to last year, with some items even doubling in price. One of the most striking price hikes is Orion’s Chocolate Bunny with M&Ms. The 85-gram treat, which sold for 42.90 crowns last year, now retails at 89.90 crowns—a staggering 110% increase.
