Czech Christmas Markets Tighten Security Amid Busy Holiday Crowds
Prague Morning
Czech cities are strengthening security at their festive markets to ensure public safety.
From Prague to Brno, armed police officers have become a standard presence, while cities are adding physical barriers and other protective measures to control access to crowded squares.
At Mariánské Square in Brno and Náměstí Míru in Prague, authorities have installed steel barriers designed to prevent vehicles from entering pedestrian zones. “These are purely preventative measures,” police officials emphasize, reassuring visitors that the intent is safety, not restriction.
Security strategies vary by location. At Prague’s Náměstí Míru, cars can approach the market area, but steel posts block entry into pedestrian spaces. In contrast, Wenceslas Square has no permanent barriers, though only vehicles with special permits may access the site.
Brno’s Náměstí Svobody markets employ mobile Belgian-made barriers. Michal Štástný, representative of Brno’s Central City District, explained,
“These barriers are easy to move and can hold vehicles weighing up to seven and a half tons.” Their flexibility allows security personnel to adjust coverage based on crowd size and events.
Shopping Centers Step Up Security
Retail areas have also increased safety measures during the holiday season. Malls supplement police presence with security staff from private agencies.
Linda Erebay, director of a major Prague shopping mall, noted that security personnel monitor abandoned luggage, help prevent conflicts, and assist authorities in apprehending suspected thieves. These enhanced measures are expected to remain in effect until January 6.

Pickpockets Remain a Risk
The Christmas period sees a rise in pickpocket activity, especially in areas with dense crowds. While the trend has been decreasing over recent years, large cities remain hotspots. Prague consistently records over half of the country’s reported thefts, while regions like Karlovy Vary report significantly fewer incidents.
Pickpockets target inattentive visitors and are especially drawn to backpacks and easily accessible pockets. Officials advise keeping valuables out of back pockets or visible compartments and remaining vigilant in crowded areas.
