Czech Republic international and Sparta Prague midfielder Jakub Jankto has come out as gay.
The 27-year-old midfielder, who is currently on loan at Spanish club Getafe, posted an incredibly powerful video on social media to announce the news.
โHi, Iโm Jakub Jankto,โ he said in a video published on his Twitter page. โLike everybody else, I have my strengths, I have my weaknesses; I have a family, I have my friends.
โI have a job, which I have been doing it as best as I can, for years, with seriousness, professionalism and passion. Like everybody else, I also want to live my life in freedom without fears, without prejudice, without violence, but with love.
โI am homosexual, and I no longer want to hide myself.โ
Janktoโs club side Sparta Prague released a statement of their own supporting his decision.

โJakub spoke openly about his sexual orientation with the club some time ago,โ they said. โEverything else concerns his personal life. No further comments. No more questions. You have our support. Live your life, Jacob. Nothing else matters.โ
La Liga outfit Getafe also commented on Janktoโs announcement, saying: โOur utmost respect and unconditional support to our footballer Jakub Jankto.โ
The Premier League added: โWeโre with you, Jakub. Football is for everyone.โ
The former Sampdoria midfielder is the highest-profile player in menโs football to publicly come out as gay after Adelaide United full-back Josh Cavallo and Blackpool forward Jake Daniels opened up about their sexuality in 2021 and 2022.
Jankto started his career with Serie A club Udinese and made a total of 65 appearances for the Italian club before joining Sampdoria in 2019 for a reported โฌ15 million.
He is a regular starter for the Czech Republic and has made 45 appearances for his county since making his debut in 2017.
