Czechia's Easter Markets, Castles and Folk Traditions Return

Prague Morning

The Easter season in Czechia is once again bringing a wide range of traditional markets, castle festivals and folk events across the country.

In the capital, the Easter atmosphere will return to Prague’s historic squares. Easter markets will open at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square between 21 March and 12 April.

Stalls will sell painted eggs, wooden rattles, ribbons and traditional Easter whips, while stage programmes will feature folk songs and dances reflecting Czech spring traditions.

Easter markets are also planned in other Czech cities.

In Plzeň, the Easter market at Republic Square will run from 25 March to 5 April. Visitors can browse stands offering painted eggs, handmade whips decorated with colourful ribbons, sausages, stuffing, cheeses and local mead.

In Brno, the Easter Festival at Svobody Square will run from 27 March to 5 April. Around forty stands will sell wicker baskets, pottery, jewellery, Easter decorations and traditional painted eggs. The programme will also include performances by Moravian folklore groups, combining dance and live music.

The southern Bohemian town of Český Krumlov will host its Easter market at Svornosti Square from 2 to 6 April. Local farmers and artisans will offer seasonal products, wooden crafts, fur sheep toys, spring flowers and traditional Easter whips.

Other regional centres are also joining the celebrations. Easter events will take place in Olomouc at Upper Square from 27 March to 6 April, and spring and Easter markets will be held in České Budějovice between 26 and 28 March.

Easter in Czechia is closely connected with open-air museums, where visitors can see how spring holidays were celebrated in the past.

The Wallachian Open-Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm will offer a three-day Easter programme from 4 to 6 April. The main events will take place in the wooden village area, where demonstrations of traditional customs will be presented. Visitors can try painting eggs or taste spring soup.

Similar programmes will also run in other heritage sites, including the open-air museum in Kouřim, the village exhibition area in Přerov nad Labem, and the open-air museums in Hlinsko and Zubrnice.

Castles and châteaux are also preparing special Easter programmes.

One of the highlights in South Moravia will be Easter at Valtice Château, a former residence of the Liechtenstein family. The chateau will offer several tour options, alongside stands with handmade products, refreshments and local wines. The honorary courtyard will be decorated with oversized Easter eggs, while cembalo music will play in the inner areas during the holiday weekend.

Near Prague, visitors can head to the ruins of Okoř Castle, where an Easter knight festival will take place on Easter Saturday. The programme includes a medieval knight tournament, fencing demonstrations, equestrian falconry, period music, historical dances and puppet theatre performances for children.

In South Bohemia, the Easter market at Blatná Château will present local Easter crafts and seasonal products.

Other castles and châteaux across the country are also opening their gates for spring visitors, including Křivoklát Castle, Kačina Château, Český Šternberk Castle, Hrádek u Nechanic Château, Sychrov Château and Kozel Château.
