Día de los Muertos Brings Mexico's Spirit to Prague's Holešovice

Prague Morning

On Thursday, October 30, Holešovice Market will once again turn into a stage for Mexico’s Día de los Muertos, the traditional festival that blends remembrance with celebration.

The event promises Mexican food, live music, workshops, and a cultural program designed for families and children.

At the center of the celebration will be Market Square, which transforms into a Mexican-themed food court from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Street vendors will serve tacos, quesadillas, churros, and traditional drinks. Alongside the food stands, visitors can pause at a Mexican altar—a central element of the holiday—loaned by the Mexican Embassy.

This year, the altar will be accessible for several days leading up to the festival, starting on Saturday, October 25, giving people time to reflect and learn about the meaning behind its candles, flowers, and offerings.

The festival expands indoors as well. Hall 13 will host a Mexican market, selling traditional products and food, along with lectures, workshops, and a screening of Pixar’s film Coco.

For younger audiences, the spotlight will be on Hall 11, where children and parents (costumes encouraged) can join a special hour-long interactive program.

Activities include a carnival, dance workshops, painting a wooden figure of the legendary Mexican hairless dog Xolo, and even short lessons in Spanish. Admission is 100 CZK per person, and the program is repeated in blocks throughout the afternoon. Tickets are available in advance via the GoOut network.

Adding to the authenticity, a real Xoloitzcuintli, Mexico’s iconic hairless dog, will be introduced to visitors. A breeder will explain its cultural significance, offering children the chance to see the animal up close.

Both Hall 11 and Hall 13 will also feature Día de los Muertos face-painting, including the iconic “Catrina” style.

Music and Evening Festivities

The atmosphere will be lifted further by costumed stilt walkers and live performances. In the early evening, Mariachi Azteca de Praga will fill the square with traditional music, encouraging visitors to sing along.

Later, DJ Gadjo will close the night with a set inspired by Mexican rhythms. Those looking to keep the celebration going can head to an after-party at Burza #4.
