Vršovice Gets Its First Ice Rink - Free Entry for Local Children
Prague Morning
Vršovice will have its first-ever public ice rink this winter, as Prague 10 City Hall prepares to open a 30-by-15-meter rink on Svatopluk Čecha Square.
The official opening is planned for the first Advent weekend, with skating continuing through the end of February.
Admission will be free for all children aged 10 to 15 who live in Prague 10.
In the mornings, the rink will be reserved for school groups that sign up in advance. The project also includes a skate rental and refreshment stand, making it accessible for families and schools alike.
Deputy Mayor Pavel Šutka said the district hopes the rink will serve not only as a sports venue but also as a community gathering place. “We’d like to link the rink’s operation with local activities — for example, a mini-hockey tournament for neighborhoods such as Vršovice, Strašnice, Malešice, Zahradní Město and Nusle,” he explained.
According to City Hall, the total cost of the project is estimated at around 740,000 CZK plus VAT and energy expenses. Šutka called it “almost a miracle at today’s prices,” emphasizing that the district worked hard to deliver the rink affordably.
Officials also say they are taking local residents’ comfort into account. The rink’s design and operation will minimize noise and light pollution to ensure it does not disturb nearby homes.
“Unlike other parts of Prague, we haven’t had an outdoor ice rink here, except for Gutovka,” Šutka noted. “We want to make this popular winter pastime available right in the heart of Desítka.”
The rink will be located in the lower section of Svatopluk Čecha Square, between the tram stop and the semicircular central area.
