Jiřího z Poděbrad Square Welcomes Back Farmers Market

Prague Morning

The farmers’ market season has officially begun on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, where renovation work has been ongoing for the past two years.

The markets opened on Wednesday, March 18, and will be held from Wednesday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mayor of Prague 3, Michal Vronský (TOP 09), expressed optimism about the market’s return. “Completing the reconstruction will improve the overall experience of visiting the square and the market itself. By early summer, we expect the revitalized area to attract more visitors, with spaces accessible to all age groups,” Vronský said.

The markets has been a staple of Prague’s local scene since 2010. In 2020, administration of the markets was taken over by the Prague 3 city district.

Visitors can expect fresh fruits and vegetables, organic products, handmade goods, and even a unique “magic” box where patrons can donate eggshells, stale pastries, or paper bags for others to reuse during shopping.

Despite the market’s return being welcomed, some local officials have criticized the lengthy and costly reconstruction project. Filip Nekola (ODS), chairman of the opposition parliamentary club Coalition for Prague 3, described the revitalization as a cautionary tale of mismanaged public funds.

“The square’s reconstruction has dragged on for more than twenty years, with costs rising from 90 million to nearly 500 million crowns. Residents deserve modern spaces, not years of construction without updates, basic amenities, or any consideration from the district administration,” Nekola said.

Work on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square began in early 2024, with a projected total cost of 477.8 million crowns including VAT. The redevelopment of the metro station at the square was completed in late 2024.

In the coming years, the city also plans to reconstruct Vinohradská třída, further modernizing the area.
