Discover Municipal House: Prague's Art Nouveau Gem with Guided Tours

Prague Morning

The Municipal House, finished in 1911, is often called the city’s greatest Art Nouveau landmark. Its sweeping façade and elaborate interiors bear the work of Alfons Mucha and other leading artists of the time.

For Prague residents, the building serves as both a concert hall and a social space. Visitors can only enter on a guided tour, which offers rare access to the richly decorated interiors usually closed to the public.

Touring the Building

The route includes Smetana Hall, crowned by a glass dome and still used for major concerts, the Moravian Slovak Parlour with its folk-inspired design, and the Oriental Parlour, a room steeped in exotic decoration.

Visitors also pass through the Mayor’s Hall and other salons named after Czech political figures, where the city once entertained its most prominent guests.

Walking from one hall to the next, it becomes clear why the Municipal House is seen as a complete work of art: from stained glass and mosaics to carved wood and bronze details, every corner reflects the craftsmanship of early 20th-century Prague.

Where History Was Written

The Municipal House (Obecní dům) was built between 1905 and 1912 on the site of the former Royal Court as an official centre for Czech social and cultural affairs.

When an open competition for its design produced no outright winner, the project was entrusted to the architects Antonín Balšánek and Osvald Polívka, supervised by a nine-member committee.

Mayor’s Hall

The Obecní dům has played a significant role in the recent history of the country.

On October 28, 1918, the newly independent state of Czechoslovakia was proclaimed here in the Smetana Hall, and in 1989 it was the scene for the first meeting between the communist government and the democratic Civic Forum, led by Václav Havel.
