Prague Morning

The National Theatre has announced its new program for the 2025/2026 season, featuring almost 80 productions, 19 of which will be world premieres.

Productions will run the gamut, featuring classics as well as contemporary productions, made by Czechs and international artists.

The opera program kicks off with a production of Mozartโ€™s Idomeneo by iconoclast Spanish director Calixto Bieito, who will focus on the emotional aspect of the piece. At the same time, the program will also cater to a younger audience with the childrenโ€™s opera Carousel by Vรกclav Trojan.

As in 2026, it will be 150 years since the German composer Richard Wagner opened his festival house, his works will feature prominently in the latter half of the cycle, including the opening pieces of the Ring Cycle.

As for the National Theatre itself, productions will be slightly fewer as its new stage is reconstructed. In the meantime, it will focus on stories about the transformation of society, including adaptations of Ovidโ€™s Metamorphoses and Mary Shelleyโ€™s novel Frankenstein.

Cutting edge ballet

The ballet will also focus on stories, says Filip Barankiewicz, director of the National Theatre Ballet. He emphasizes that the ballet will serve audiences with both classical works, as well as those of contemporary creators.

In October, the ballet will feature Liliom from John Neumeier. However, the most anticipated production will be performed in March of next year when Avant-Garde: Cutting Edge will take to the stage in a world premiere. This piece by world-renowned choreographers Robert Bondara and Marc Goecke includes Jiล™รญ Kyliรกnโ€™s masterpiece 27โ€™52โ€.

There will also be more classical pieces with modernized choreography, like Swan Lake, as well as great stories: Lโ€™Histoire de Manon by Kenneth Macmillan or Romeo and Juliet by John Crank.

For a more Czech note, audiences of all ages can look forward to the fairy tale ballet The Sunf, the Moon and the Windโ€“ The Tale of Three Princesses by Viktor Konvalinka.
