Prague’s Petřín Funicular is undergoing a significant transformation.

The funicular has been out of service since September 2024 due to extensive damage caused by heavy rains. In response, the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) started a comprehensive reconstruction project, aiming to modernize the infrastructure and enhance passenger experience.

The centerpiece of the modernization is the introduction of two new cable cars, set to be manufactured by the Austrian-Swiss group Doppelmayr/Garaventa.

The vehicles are expected to arrive in Prague by spring 2026. Each car will be 12.3 meters long and 2.45 meters wide, featuring large glass panels to offer panoramic views of the city.

Designed by Czech designer Anna Marešová, the new cars will have a capacity of 19 seated passengers and up to 100 standing passengers. The interiors will be divided into four sections, ensuring a comfortable and spacious ride.

Track Reconstruction Progress

Simultaneously, extensive work is underway to reconstruct the 510-meter track. The demolition of the old infrastructure has been completed, including the removal of cables, guide pulleys, and original concrete slabs.

Currently, approximately 40% of the base concrete layers have been poured, with about 20% of the final load-bearing reinforced concrete slabs installed.

DPP anticipates that the first passengers will be able to ride the new cable cars to Petřín in the summer of 2026 as part of a test run with passengers.
