A new entrance to the Muzeum metro station vestibule on the corner of Wenceslas Square and Washington Street will open this autumn.
The new exit, located at Dลฏm potravin, where an Albert supermarket and McDonaldโs are situated, will be larger than the previous one, slightly repositioned, and will now include an escalator, according to the Prague Public Transport Company (DPP).
The new metro entrance is part of a broader redevelopment project aimed at modernizing upper Wenceslas Square. The plan includes the construction of a tram line, traffic reduction, and a complete redesign of the area.
Work began in mid-2023, significantly affecting both vehicle traffic and pedestrian movement in one of Pragueโs busiest locations. The tram service is expected to begin in 2027.
As part of the redesign, both metro exits behind the St. Wenceslas statue will be permanently closed to make way for the new tram tracks. One of these entrances has already been sealed, and the second will be removed after the new entrance at Dลฏm potravin becomes operational.
In addition to the metro entrance, several major projects are ongoing. A rainwater retention tank is being installed at the intersection of Vodiฤkova and Jindลiลกskรก streets.
The 10.5-meter-deep pit is now being reinforced, and work on the concrete structure will continue throughout 2024. A new Mลฏstek metro station entrance will be built at the Jindลiลกskรก/Vodiฤkova intersection. It will be centrally located between two former entrances, both of which are already closed.
A major water supply line relocation is underway at the Opletalova Street exit. This involves temporary connections to maintain service for Prague 1 residents. The construction of an underground utility collector in the squareโs central strip continues. This will support market stalls and future commercial use.
On March 31, the second phase of the Muzeum metro station ceiling reconstruction will begin. This includes utility network relocation, replacement of old waterproofing layers, and ceiling reinforcement. During this phase, main road traffic will be rerouted to two lanes closer to the square. The work is scheduled for completion by December 2024.
The tram line from the National Museum to Wenceslas Square began construction in June 2023, with a budget of CZK 1.24 billion. In the second quarter of 2024, work will also start on connecting Wenceslas Square with Vinohradskรก Tลรญda. Both tram lines are expected to become operational in mid-2027.
