New South African-Style Jerky Biltong Bistro & Shop Lands In Prague

South African food might be one of the hardest cuisines to find in Prague, but it’s getting a significant boost thanks to Saffa Maso, a unique bistro and shop located in Prague 8 – Libeň (Sokolovská 146/150a, 180 00 Praha 8)

Saffa Maso offers an impressive array of South African specialties that are set to delight both expats and locals.

The menu features Biltong Tacos, a fusion that brings together traditional South African flavors with a modern twist, smashed burger with South African flavors, a selection of South African wines and beers, including Pinotage and Cap Classique Pierre Jourdan bubbles.

The ice-cold Windhoek beer, a staple in South Africa, is also on offer, providing a refreshing accompaniment to any meal.

Dessert lovers are in for a treat with traditional South African sweets such as Malva pudding, a rich, sticky sponge pudding topped with a caramel sauce, and Melk Tart, a creamy milk tart with a dusting of cinnamon.

In addition, Saffa Maso boasts a selection of traditional South African dried meats: droëwors, which are dried meat sausages, and boerewors, ground meat sausages seasoned with a blend of spices like coriander and nutmeg.

The bistro is run by Nicolaas Uys, who moved to the Czech Republic in 2017 with his “main goal” being to play rugby at an international level.

Fast forward five years and Nicolaas is not only playing for the Czech Republic national team but is also playing at club level for Tatra Smichov rugby club, fell in love with and married a Czech woman and set up a South African biltong company.

“I was unable to source good quality dried meat in the Czech Republic and was running out of supplies from my friends and family back in South Africa,” says Nicolaas to Prague Morning.

“I was hoping to expand to some bigger markets with the end goal of opening a shop that not only sells his biltong but other traditional South African products and finally my dream became reality,” he added.
