Ostrava Unveils Designs for New 20,000-Seat Football Stadium

Prague Morning

Architectural designs for a new football stadium in Ostrava were presented on Tuesday.

The project concerns the planned Nové Bazaly stadium, which is expected to seat about 20,000 spectators.

From January 14, nine shortlisted designs will be displayed at an exhibition in the city hall of the Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz district.

The exhibition includes a model of the winning proposal by the Barcelona-based studio L35 Arquitectos. City officials and representatives of FC Baník Ostrava announced the results of the international competition at a press conference.

According to the city, construction could start in 2029. The stadium is expected to be completed two years later. The cost of the main structure is estimated at around 2.5 billion crowns.

The new stadium is planned for the site of the former Bazaly ground, where Baník Ostrava played home matches from 1959 until the end of the 2014–15 season. The venue is intended to meet requirements for international matches.

Plans also include a club museum, restaurants, and fan shops.

Mayor Jan Dohnal said the city has begun talks with the winning studio about further cooperation on the project. Detailed design work could start in the first quarter of this year and is expected to last about twelve months. After that, the project will move into the permitting phase, followed by a public tender for construction.

Thirty teams took part in the architectural competition. The jury selected the winning design unanimously. According to the city, the proposal fits the site and reflects Ostrava’s industrial background while keeping the stadium accessible to the public. The surrounding area is planned as an open space for residents, not only for match days.

The city plans to cover most of the construction costs from its own budget. The Moravian-Silesian Region has pledged 250 million crowns. Officials are also looking at other funding options, including possible European subsidies. Talks are under way with FC Baník Ostrava about future operating costs.

Alejandro Lorca of L35 Arquitectos said the design was based on the character of the site and the city. He described the project as a stadium that respects Ostrava’s past while meeting current technical and operational standards.
