Prague to Host European Games at 2028 Hockey World Cup

Prague Morning

Prague will host the European stage of the 2028 World Cup of Hockey, marking the first time the Czech capital will stage a full segment of the tournament.

The eight-team competition will be split across three cities. While Prague will stage the European group, the North American group will be played in Calgary, with Edmonton hosting the medal rounds, including the final.

Games in Prague are set to take place at the O2 Arena, one of the country’s largest indoor venues. Calgary matches will be held at Scotia Place, a new arena expected to open ahead of the 2027–28 NHL season, while Edmonton’s Rogers Place will host the decisive stages of the tournament.

The competition is expected to run over 13 days, featuring 17 games along with fan events and media activities. Organizers said details such as exact dates, participating nations, and the full schedule will be released later.

The 2028 edition will be the fourth World Cup of Hockey, following previous tournaments in 1996, 2004 and 2016. The United States won the inaugural event, while Canada claimed the two most recent titles.

Prague previously hosted a limited number of games in earlier editions, but only involving the Czech national team. This will be the first time the city hosts an entire segment of the tournament.

Local organization of the Prague leg will be handled by Perinvest Group. Its owner, Tomáš Petera, said the event represents a chance to strengthen the Czech Republic’s position as a leading destination for international sporting events. He also pointed to expected economic benefits, including increased tourism and high attendance.
