Nádraží Bubny Instead of Vltavská? Prague 7 Says "No" to the Proposal

Prague 7 councilors do not agree with a proposal to rename the Vltavská metro station to Nádraží Bubny.

The public debate on renaming some metro stations was first sparked by the intention to change the name of Českomoravská to Aréna Libeň.

“We really like the historical name Bubny, and it is great that it is returning in the name of the station. But now a major construction project—the Vltavská Philharmonic—is currently underway at Vltavská. Renaming Vltavská now to Nádraží Bubny and then back to Vltavská Philharmonic is difficult to justify,” Jan Čižinský, the mayor of Prague 7, wrote in a post on X.

In a press release, Prague 7 spokesman Martin Vokuš noted that there are two metro line C stations in Prague 7, which would both have the word “nádraží” in their names if the Vltavská station were renamed. That similarity, he argued, could confuse public transport users.

At the end of May, Ropid spokesman Filip Drápal announced that the organization is trying to standardize the names of railway stations and stops that are major public transport hubs.

According to Drápal, standardizing names is important for two reasons.

First, the railway’s integration with Prague Integrated Transport, and second, the connection of Václav Havel Airport to the railway.

Drápal mentioned that Ropid supports renaming the Náměstí Republiky metro station to Masarykovo nádraží, the Vysočanská station to Nádraží Vysočany, or Vltavská station to Nádraží Bubny.

The operator of the O2 Arena requested the renaming of Českomoravská station to Aréna Libeň after the station was closed for about a year in January due to reconstruction.

The proposal has led to significant negative reactions on social media. According to the petition’s creators, the renaming is unnecessary, confusing, and fails to respect the historical and topographic context. To date, over 470 people have signed it.
