Prague Launches New App to Explore the Origins of City Streets
Prague Morning
A new digital platform called Prague Streeter (Pražský uličník) has been launched by Prague City Hall.
The app lets users explore the history behind the names of streets, squares, parks, and embankments across the capital.
It is free to use and available both on desktop and mobile devices.
Developed in cooperation with the Prague City Archives and the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Praha), the project builds upon the popular book Encyclopedia of the Names of Prague’s Public Spaces, transforming it into an interactive, map-based platform.
The database currently includes 8,318 street names, and it will continue to grow as the city’s landscape evolves.
The application not only contains all streets registered in the Register of Territorial Identification, Addresses and Real Estate (RÚIAN) but also those that have disappeared over time or were planned but never built.
Users can search by the current, historical, or even German-language street names, making it a valuable tool for historians, researchers, and curious residents alike.
A key feature of the app is the ability to overlay old and new maps of Prague, including Jüttner’s 1816 plan, and compare archival and contemporary photographs. This allows users to visualize how different neighborhoods have developed over the centuries and trace the evolution of urban spaces.
The project, which cost CZK 565,000, went live on October 15, 2025.
