PHOTOS: Prague's Iconic Museum Underpass Is Being Demolished

The pedestrian underpass beneath Legerova Street, once a key shortcut for thousands of pedestrians moving between Wenceslas Square and Vinohrady, is being dismantled.

Its demolition marks the next phase in the construction of the long-planned Museum tram line, which will eventually link central Prague more efficiently.

This tunnel, located just a few steps from the National Museum, is disappearing from the city’s map after decades of use. The change reflects Prague’s effort to expand its tram network and improve surface transport around the Museum and main station area.

Demolition began as part of extensive works that have been underway for several weeks. Crews are currently focusing on the stretch adjacent to the National Museum building, aiming to integrate the new line with the section that will run through Vinohrady.

Although the tracks between the old and new National Museum buildings were laid as early as 2018, they remained unused. That 80-meter segment stood isolated, waiting for the rest of the line to catch up. Now, that wait is over. If construction proceeds on schedule, the new tram route should be operational by mid-2027.

City officials say the new line will dramatically change the way people navigate the area. “The new Muzeum tram line will not only bring faster and more comfortable connections between Vinohrady and the city center, but most importantly, it will significantly improve orientation and accessibility for passengers,” said Deputy Mayor for Transport Zdeněk Hřib.

“At the moment, the stops are not barrier-free, and the whole area is rather confusing — that will change fundamentally.”

While the loss of the underpass may frustrate long-time users accustomed to avoiding street-level traffic, the city’s planners believe that the updated tram connection will provide greater accessibility, clarity, and comfort for future generations.
