The Prague City Council has approved a public tender for the initial phase of the long-awaited revitalization of Karlovo náměstí.

As part of the second stage, the city will improve conditions for existing greenery, conduct tree root surveys, and transplant selected trees. Work is set to begin in autumn 2025, with the square’s full transformation expected to start within two years.

“This preparatory phase brings us closer to the comprehensive redevelopment of Karlovo náměstí, which could begin as early as 2027. We are currently waiting for the zoning decision, but to keep the park accessible and user-friendly, the work will be divided into two phases,” said Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Territorial and Strategic Development.

“The only public restrictions will be minor noise and dust, with no major impact on accessibility. The success of this project depends not only on architectural and landscape design but also on long-term management and maintenance. That’s why it’s crucial that the city establishes a sustainable care and oversight system for the park.”

Ensuring Long-Term Protection of Mature Trees

“Karlovo náměstí deserves high-quality care. Protecting its mature trees is a priority, and our shared goal is to ensure they remain in excellent condition before the reconstruction begins,” said Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor for the Environment and Climate Plan.

Before full-scale construction starts, Prague will invest CZK 9.68 million into soil preparation to create optimal conditions for tree health.

“The work, scheduled for autumn 2025, will last about six months to ensure the trees are well-protected. Our goal is to preserve the character of Charles Square while making it a functional and inviting space for all visitors,” said Michal Hroza, Prague Councilor for Infrastructure.

The Prague 2 district administration has approved the project, the Department of Environmental Protection, and the Department of Monument Preservation at Prague City Hall.

The revitalization of Karlovo náměstí has been a long-term objective for Prague, with discussions and planning dating back to 2010.
