Prague’s Charles Bridge Welcomes Back ‘The Vision of St. Luitgarda’

On the morning of May 28, the sculpture ‘The Vision of Saint Luitgarda’ (Sen svaté Luitgardy) was reinstalled on Prague’s Charles Bridge after a four-year absence.

It had been removed in June 2020 to repair a crack in the bridge pillar where the sculpture was mounted.

The artwork was kept in the depository of the Gallery of Prague (GHMP) during the repair period. Despite the rainy weather, the reinstallation went smoothly.

‘The Vision of St. Luitgarda’ is often hailed as the most beautiful sculpture on Charles Bridge. The original piece, crafted in 1710 by Czech sculptor Matthias Bernard Braun, adorned the bridge until 1996.

Due to its deteriorating condition, the original sculpture was moved to the National Museum’s lapidarium in 1996.

It was replaced by a 1995 replica created by Jiří Novák and Borživoj Rák, which has since been enjoyed by both locals and tourists.
