If your team wants action (not theory), here’s a checklist that works surprisingly well across products. You can run it in an hour and immediately find gaps.

UX and product: Do we explain sensitive steps (verification, payments, data sharing) in plain language? Do we have a clear retry path when verification fails? Can users access, export, and delete their data without a maze?

Security basics: Do we log key events (login, reset, device change, payment attempts, payouts)? Do staff accounts use MFA, and are admin permissions limited? Do we rate-limit critical endpoints and monitor unusual traffic patterns?

Data practices: Is sensitive data encrypted in transit and at rest? Do we enforce retention rules, or are they just a document? Do we know where personal data flows between services (and who can access it)?

Operations: Do we have an incident playbook with owners and steps? Can support see a readable timeline of what happened to a user? Do we review the “top 10” fraud and abuse patterns monthly and adjust controls?

One last thought: you don’t need to build a “perfect” compliance machine to improve quickly. Pick one weak link and fix it. Then the next.
