Murder on the Yacht: 'The Cat's Meow' Comes to Prague

Prague Morning

The Mad and Merry Men theatre company will open the new season with The Cat’s Meow, a dark comedy set in 1920s Hollywood.

The play is inspired by the mysterious death of film producer Thomas Ince, whose fate on a yacht owned by publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst became one of Hollywood’s greatest scandals.

Written by Steven Peros and later adapted into a film, the story brings together real-life figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davies, and Hearst himself on a weekend cruise filled with jazz, jealousy, and intrigue.

The Prague production will be staged at Loď Tajemství, the floating theatre on the Vltava river.

Director Raynar Rogers leads an international cast including Scott Sophos as Hearst, Begüm Burian as actress Margaret Livingston, and Oliver Fecko as Thomas Ince.

Producer Gordon L. Schmitz highlights the unusual setting: “Audiences will actually step onto Hearst’s yacht, greeted by a live jazz pianist. They can even join in the 1920s atmosphere by dressing up for the occasion.”
