Czechia Ranks Third in the EU for Alcohol Consumption
The Czech Republic is among the top three EU countries with the highest alcohol consumption per capita. According to the latest statistics, average consumption reaches 13.7 litres per person per year, placing Czechia third after Romania and Latvia. Alcohol prices remain below the EU average, at about 93 percent of the European level.
Prague Sets New Records for Apartment Sales and Prices
Demand for new housing in Prague reached a historic high in 2025. Developers sold 7,800 apartments, the highest annual figure ever recorded. Sales exceeded last year’s result by more than 8 percent and surpassed the previous record set in 2021. Prices also hit a new high. By the end of the year, the average price of new apartments reached almost CZK 178,000 per square metre.
Crime in Czechia Fell by 1.9% Last Year, Police Say
Czech police recorded a 1.9 percent decrease in crime last year. The crime clearance rate remained stable at 56 percent. Offences committed by foreigners accounted for around 12 percent of all recorded crimes. Ukrainians represented 5.4 percent of total registered offences.
Foreigners made up ten percent of Czech population in 2024
Foreigners accounted for ten percent of the population of Czech Republic in 2024, up 0.2 percentage points year on year, according to the Czech Statistical Office. The highest share was recorded in Prague, where foreigners made up 25.3 percent of residents. Population growth last year was driven mainly by migration, while natural increase was recorded only in the capital.
IKEA to Modernise Its Iconic Blue FRAKTA Bag
IKEA Czech Republic is preparing an update to its well-known blue FRAKTA bag. The product will temporarily disappear from stores in April before returning in a new version. The company says the change is a planned modernisation, not a discontinuation, and details will be announced in the coming months. In the Czech Republic, sales approached 900,000 units over the past year, driven by its low price, durability, and everyday use for shopping, travel, and storage.
Czech Opposition Criticises Government Silence on Greenland
Czech opposition parties have publicly expressed support for Denmark and Greenland, sharply criticising Prime Minister Andrej Babiš for refusing to defend them directly. In a joint statement, opposition leaders stressed Greenland’s right to self-determination and described the government’s silence as unacceptable following statements by US President Donald Trump.
