Prague Gears Up for World Figure Skating Championships
In the second half of March, Prague will see heightened security for the World Figure Skating Championships. Up to 200 extra police officers will be deployed daily, primarily around the O2 Arena, where competitions will take place from March 24–29. Additional patrols will cover other parts of the city. Pyrotechnic units, airport immigration police, and air units with drones will assist in maintaining order.
Czech Financial Resilience Remains Limited
A recent survey shows that only about 25% of Czech residents could maintain their usual standard of living for less than a month without income. Another 33% could manage for one to three months, 19% for three to six months, 12% for six months to a year, and only 11% have savings exceeding one year.
Unemployment Hits Six-Year High
Czech unemployment rose to 5.2% in February, its highest level since 2017. Analysts attribute the increase to seasonal factors and changes in benefit regulations, which have kept more people registered with employment services for longer.
Czech Car Fleet Continues to Grow and Age
By the end of 2025, Czech roads carried approximately 6.86 million passenger cars, up 132,000 from the previous year. The average age of vehicles reached 16.68 years. Over the past decade, the fleet expanded by roughly 1.7 million cars, while the average age rose by 2.5 years.
Pro-President Demonstration Scheduled in Prague
Another demonstration supporting the Czech President is set for March 21. Organizers say the event aims to show backing amid recent political disputes. The previous demonstration on February 1, held at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, drew an estimated 100,000 people.
Czech Republic Marks Tibetan Uprising Anniversary
Flags of Tibet were displayed on city halls, state institutions, and universities nationwide to commemorate the 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule. Tens of thousands died, and the Dalai Lama fled to India. The annual solidarity action, held in the Czech Republic since 1996, highlights ongoing human rights issues in Tibet.
