September 28: New Festival Brings Hidden Prague to Life Along Vltava
Prague Morning
On Sunday, September 28, Prague’s riverbanks will host the first-ever Vltava Festival, a multi-genre event inviting locals and visitors to experience the river from a fresh perspective.
Organized by Kreativní Praha in partnership with Prague City Hall and the Institute of Planning and Development, the festival marks International Rivers Day and aims to present the Vltava not just as a natural feature, but as a hub of inspiration, education, and movement.
The program includes performances, expert talks, interactive workshops, and behind-the-scenes access to rarely opened city landmarks.
Families, in particular, can enjoy special programming on the Tajemství boat of the Forman Brothers, which will host a one-of-a-kind theatrical performance.
Among the most anticipated parts of the day is the chance to step inside areas normally closed to the public — like the underground supply tunnel beneath the National Theatre and Prague’s technical monuments.
Children and adults alike can take part in interactive theatre, art activities, and creative workshops held along the embankments.
Water lovers can also join or watch the popular “Over Three Weirs” canoe race, a tradition organized by Czech Scouts and known as the largest boating event in the country. Another highlight: floating “Across Prague” through three of the Vltava’s historic weirs.

Adding to the unique atmosphere will be guided tours, lectures, and exhibitions covering the history, architecture, and ecological role of the Vltava. One key venue will be the Štvanice Hydroelectric Power Plant, which will host several of these programs.
To help visitors navigate the festival, special riverboat transport will connect participating sites. For those staying on land, the popular Architram tram will return with its special guided route offering an architectural take on the city’s riverside development.
Entry to most events will be free, although registration is required for some due to limited space.
Details, including the full program and a reservation system launching September 1, are available here.
