The Georgian National Ballet “Sukhishvili” began as a family enterprise, has survived communist oppression, the Cold War, the break-up of the Soviet Union and has grown into an internationally renowned company performing on the world’s best stages.

The National Ballet of Georgia “Sukhishvili” with its own orchestra and 70 dancers is heading to Prague and will perform in the Czech capital on February 18th, 2023, at Kongresové centrum.

“Sukhishvili” performed at the best venues in the world, including the Colosseum in Rome, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and Royal Albert Hall in London, among others.

It was recognized with the Guinness World Records book award for the record number of encores – 14 times at La Scala theater.

Often described as the “greatest dance in the world,” the show, which is orchestrated by the founders’ son Tengiz Sukhishvili, includes a spectacular mix of folk-inspired traditional dance, balletic pieces and acrobatics, performed by 70 dancers on stage.

“Sukhishvili” is no ordinary ballet company. Sometimes called ‘the flying Georgians’, the show combines thrilling, high energy and acrobatic routines with the precision and elegance that you would expect of one of the world’s most famous ballet ensembles.”

“It is very specific to Georgian dance; our male dancers dance on their toes, and they have nothing inside, no protection. It’s not like ballet block shoes with points, it’s just thin leather boots and they dance on the toes, that’s very difficult,” says one of the dancers.

“Only when you try some of the movements by yourself do you get an idea of how difficult it is to overcome gravity with elegance. Not everybody succeeds. Some dances from the mountain regions look like real battles or competitions of bravery and courage,” he adds.
