Eska, a popular bakery and kitchen in Prague’s Karlín district, has been a favorite since its opening, setting a new standard for high-quality, artisanal baked goods. Known for its signature breads and pastries, the establishment is part of the Ambiente group, which has helped redefine modern Czech dining. Now, Eska is expanding with a second location in Letná, set to open in mid-February. The Letná branch will emphasize pastries and retail offerings, diverging from the Karlín location’s more extensive operation. The menu will feature freshly baked breads, such as the popular “Bread 33” and “Bread 66,” which use 33% and 66% rye flour, respectively. The Wait Is Over: Five Guys Sets Opening Date in Prague

The popular American fast food chain Five Guys is set to debut in the Czech Republic with its first branch in Prague’s iconic Máj department store on Národní třída. After more than a year of delays, the long-awaited opening is now anticipated to take place by early spring 2025. Preparations for the branch began in 2023, with initial plans targeting a June 2024 launch. However, the timeline was postponed multiple times, with subsequent estimates pointing to autumn and later the end of the year. According to Karel Samec, spokesperson for Amadeus Real Estate, which manages the Máj department store, the restaurant is now expected to open by March. An advertising banner announcing the upcoming launch has been displayed outside the Máj store for several months. Additionally, Five Guys has launched a Czech-language website introducing its menu and providing job opportunities within the chain. Three Czech Dishes Named Among the World’s Worst-Rated Foods

TasteAtlas has unveiled the planet’s worst-rated foods, based on 600,000 ratings. Topping the list is Blodplat, a dish traditional to Sweden and Finnish Lapland of rye or barley flour and (wait for it) animal blood dumplings, which is usually served as a side dish to fried bacon, pork, butter and lingonberry jam. Interesting. In second place was bocadillo de sardinas, a sardine sandwich native to Spain. Prague Farmers’ Markets Reopen for the 2025 Season

Prague’s beloved farmers’ markets are gearing up for another season. Two iconic markets—Náplavka in Prague 2 and Kubáň in Prague 10—will open their stalls on Saturday, February 1. Náplavka: Celebrating 16 Years of Community and Fresh Produce Sixteen years ago, the first-ever farmers’ market on Prague’s Rašínovo nábřeží embankment marked the start of a tradition that few initially believed would thrive. “Attempts to establish a market here had failed before. Even farmers were skeptical at first, and we had to work hard to convince them,” recalls Jiří Sedláček, chairman of the Archetyp Association, which operates the market. The persistence paid off. Chlebíčky, the Legendary Czech Party Food

A little bit of language first. The full name is obložený chlebíček (singular) or obložené chlebíčky (plural) which literally means “small garnished bread(s)”. However, if you say just chlebíček or chlebíčky, everybody in the Czech Republic will know what you mean. What type of sandwiches are these? The most important feature is that there is only one slice of bread. Besides this basically, anything goes. In general we could say that a chlebíček has three main parts: bread, spread and garnish. The bread is usually plain white baguette called veka. The spread can be anything from butter through typical Czech sandwich spreads like vlašský salát (vlašák). As for the garnish, there are traditional garnishes like cheese, ham, egg and gherkins but there are also luxurious varieties with caviar and smoked salmon. As for the size, the original chlebíčky sandwiches were rather small, nowadays they come in different sizes. Arabica Coffee Prices Hit 50-Year High: How It Will Affect Espresso in Prague

Coffee lovers will soon face a higher bill as prices for arabica coffee have hit record levels. This week, coffee futures surpassed the previous peak from 1977, nearly doubling in price this year alone. Futures contracts for arabica coffee reached over $3.45 per pound (0.45 kilograms) this week, breaking a nearly 50-year-old price record. While Brazil, the world’s largest producer of arabica, was affected by devastating frosts in 1975, this year’s price surge is due to a prolonged drought. In addition, Vietnam’s robusta coffee production has also been impacted by drought during the growing season, followed by heavy rains at the start of the harvest. “The drought has been a key factor this year,” explains Jiří Tyleček, chief analyst at XTB. “In spring, Vietnam’s robusta crops began to suffer, and by autumn, the drought reached Brazil, affecting arabica production—the worst in the last 70 years.” This situation represents a perfect storm of multiple challenges. Five Guys Opening in Prague Delayed: What’s Next?

The much-anticipated arrival of the American fast-food chain Five Guys in Prague has been marked by repeated delays. Initially, the chain was expected to open its first restaurant in the reconstructed Máj Národní department store earlier this year. The launch was first planned for late spring or early summer, then postponed to November, according to Hospodářské noviny. Currently, the Máj Národní management aims for an opening by New Year’s Eve. “We aim to open the Five Guys unit by the end of this year,” said Karolina Ötwösová, leasing director of Máj Národní. Nesnězeno: Reducing What’s Left Uneaten

Food waste is a massive problem. Every year as much as a billion tonnes of food goes uneaten worldwide, which could be as much as one-third of what’s produced. This isn’t just wasteful, this discarded food also releases harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which could be as much as 8-12 percent of the total. A small local company called Nesnězeno (“uneaten”) is trying to do its part to reduce these numbers; I spoke with its founder, Jakub Henni, to find out more. I meet Henni at the Nesnězeno offices, located in a small residential house on a hillside in Prague 2. Currently, it holds 14 of the firm’s 25 Czech employees, with the rest working in the Brno office, Henni’s hometown. Brno is also where the company first got its start, as a Facebook page that aimed to connect shops and restaurants with people in an attempt to reduce food waste. Milk or heavy cream, eggs, sugar, spices, and something slightly stronger. The combination of ingredients is well-known all over the world. In the Czech Republic, it’s called vaječný likér, vaječný koňak, ajrkoňak, vaječňák. The rest of the world calls it eggnog, rompope, or koquito. Eggnog has a rich tradition even in the Czech Republic. Due to the simplicity of preparation and limited possibilities during the communist era, people prepared eggnog at home for many generations. After 1989, the commercial product range has expanded but eggnog is a beverage that is still created according to inherited family recipes. Various recipes claim they’re ‘the best’, ‘the most simple’, or ‘100% homemade’.
