Prague to Brno in Just 2.5 Hours, Faster Connections to Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest

Starting July 1, the railjet Vindobona and EuroCity Metropolitan/Hungaria/Slovenská strela trains will have reduced travel times between Prague and Brno.

This improvement will also make travel to Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest faster. The EC Hungaria train will once again travel to the center of Prague, and the direct railjet Vindobona Graz – Wien – Brno – Prague – Dresden – Berlin connection will be restored.

“The completion of major repairs on Corridor 1 will allow the return of railjet and EuroCity trains on the line via Česká Třebová starting July 1. This will provide a better connection between Prague, Pardubice, and Brno. Travel to our neighboring cities Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest will also be faster,” says says Jiří Ješeta, member of the Board of Directors of ČD and Deputy Director General for Passenger Transport.

“Trains are once again becoming an appealing alternative to individual motoring on these routes, not only because of the quality and range of services but also due to reduced travel time. The journey from Prague to Brno will now take 2 hours and 35 minutes, with a 2-minute reduction in the opposite direction,” adds Ješeta.

The reduced travel time will increase the overall travel speed (including stops or sections with lower speeds) between Prague and Brno to approximately 100 km/h.

Apart from the technical aspects of the line and trains, current travel times are influenced by other investment projects on the train route and traffic density. The suburban sections in Prague and Brno, as well as Corridor 1 in general, are among the busiest lines in the Czech Republic.

International travel times will also be reduced by 21 minutes. Starting July 1, the journey from Prague to Vienna will take 4 hours and 4 minutes, from Prague to Bratislava 4 hours and 9 minutes, and from Prague to Budapest 6 hours and 43 minutes.

The Prague stop of the EuroCity Hungaria Budapest-Hamburg train will also change due to the increased speed. With the time saved, this train will once again travel to the city center and make a stop at Prague Main Station in addition to the station in Holešovice.

The improved service will also allow the direct railjet Vindobona train to resume its operation on the Graz – Prague – Berlin route. This train will also stop at Prague Central Station.

With the resumption of this service, Brno and Pardubice will have an additional direct connection to and from Dresden and Berlin.
