Tourist Season in Full Swing: Over a Million Expected in Prague This Summer

The tourist season is in full swing again in the Czech Republic. Last year, over 22 million tourists visited the country, and even more are expected this year.

Analysts estimate that over 1.5 million tourists will travel to Prague this July and August, significantly more than during the same period last year.

The Czech Republic attracts tourists with its rich history, picturesque cities, natural beauty, and affordable beer. Visitors from Germany, Poland, the UK, and Italy are among the most frequent. Prague remains the top destination, with about six million tourists visiting last year. This is a significant increase compared to 2020, the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when the number was much lower.

Other cities like ÄŒeský Krumlov and natural attractions such as the Prachovské skály also draw foreign visitors. “The summer season will be strong, with a substantial number of foreigners coming,” says FrantiÅ¡ek Reismüller, director of CzechTourism.

While the Czech Republic’s economy is not as dependent on tourism as some southern European countries, it still plays a crucial role. “In 2022, tourism accounted for 2.22 percent of the Czech economy,” says economist Petr Bartoň.

“Tourism employs 220,000 people in the Czech Republic. It’s essential for the economy and provides significant income,” adds Reismüller.

In 2022, tourism generated approximately 151 billion crowns for the Czech Republic. “Mediterranean countries have the largest share of their economy from tourism, often over 10%, with the highest being close to 25-30%, especially in Croatia and Greece,” notes Bartoň.

Czech hotels are preparing for the influx of tourists, with many already reporting high occupancy rates. “For July and August, we are currently 75 percent booked,” reports Karel Doubek, manager of Hotel Adria.

“The prospects are quite good, with occupancy around 80% for this year,” agrees Daniel Gallas, manager of the Green Garden Hotel. Just as the Czech Republic attracts many foreign tourists, Czechs also travel abroad frequently, with Croatia being their top destination.
