The internationally acclaimed band Imagine Dragons, led by frontman Dan Reynolds, is set to return to Prague next year on June 9th, with their latest album, Loom.

The American rock group, known for their energetic performances and chart-topping hits, will once again electrify the Czech capital after their previous sold-out concerts drew an astonishing 120,000 fans over two nights.

Their last visit to Prague saw them fill the expansive Letňany Airport venue twice. With their new tour, Imagine Dragons aim to recreate the magic and bring a memorable experience to their Czech fans.

Earlier this summer, Imagine Dragons released Loom, their sixth studio album, which has already received widespread praise. The album is seen as a culmination of the band’s journey of self-discovery, blending their signature sound with fresh, innovative elements.

Co-produced with Swedish hitmakers Mattman & Robin, long-time collaborators of the band, Loom strikes a perfect balance between the familiar anthems that made them a household name and the new creative explorations that emerged during its creation.

Released on June 28, Loom follows the band’s two-part Mercury series (Acts 1 & 2) and marks a new chapter in their discography. According to Dan Reynolds, the album’s songs are born from a mix of emotions—sorrow, pain, and joy—offering listeners a deep and heartfelt experience.

Reynolds also emphasized the importance of touring for the band, describing it as a therapeutic experience.

“A concert brings together a crowd of people who realize they’re not alone in their feelings. I don’t necessarily want people to feel happy or sad just because I tell them to. I want them to look around and know that others are feeling something too—that they’re not alone in whatever they’re going through,” he shares.

Tickets for the Prague concert will start at CZK 1,890, and they are expected to sell out quickly, given the band’s record-breaking history in the city.

The unemployment rate in the Czech Republic remained stable at 3.8 percent in August, unchanged from July.

This is slightly higher than last August’s rate of 3.6 percent. However, the number of job vacancies rose for the first time since March, with an increase of 1,221 month-on-month, according to the latest data from the Labour Office of the Czech Republic.

The Labour Office notes that a stable unemployment rate is typical for the summer months, as employers tend to avoid major staffing changes during the holiday season.

By the end of August, 3,232 people had started new positions in educational institutions, making education the sector with the highest number of new employees. The wholesale trade, catering, and hospitality sectors followed but with a significantly lower number of new hires.

“At the end of August and the beginning of September, we always see an influx of recent graduates and young people registering with the employment office. In August, they made up four percent of all job seekers, the same proportion as in 2022 and 2023,” said Daniel Krištof, Director-General of the Labour Office.

Krištof emphasized that school leavers and young people who did not get into further education or secure a job should register with the Labour Office to avoid having to pay for their own health insurance.

The Ústí nad Labem region recorded the highest unemployment rate last month at six percent, while Prague had the lowest at 2.9 percent. Among the districts, Most had the highest rate at 8.5 percent, while Prague-East had the lowest at just 1.5 percent.

In August, there were 1.1 job seekers per available job in the Czech Republic.

The Karviná region experienced the highest job market imbalance, with 10.5 applicants for every vacancy. Conversely, Mladá Boleslav had the most favorable ratio, with just 0.2 job seekers per open position.

If there is one actor who stands as a true icon of 1980s and 1990s action films, it has to be Arnold Schwarzenegger (77).

And now, fans in our country have the unique opportunity to meet the legendary “Arnie”! But that’s not all…

Arnold Schwarzenegger landed at Václav Havel Airport just around noon on Saturday. The former Governor of California, accompanied by his security team, headed straight to one of the city’s most luxurious hotels.

Observers caught a glimpse of him strolling through the lobby, appearing in great spirits despite his long journey.

An eagle-eyed fan even managed to snap a photo of the iconic Terminator enjoying a coffee with a panoramic view of the entire city.

Starting Monday, the second season of the Netflix series “Fubar” will begin filming in Prague, where Schwarzenegger takes on the lead role as a secret agent and family man. He will be joined by actress Monica Barbaro (34), who plays his daughter in the series.

Later that evening, Schwarzenegger was seen dining with his fellow cast members. And these weren’t just any colleagues—among them was Carrie-Anne Moss (57), the newest addition to the “Fubar” cast.

Moss, who famously played Trinity in the sci-fi blockbuster “The Matrix,” will portray a former East German spy in the new season.

In Prague, filming will begin now on Old Town Square, Dušní, Bílkova, Kozí, Haštalská, Široká, Vězeňská and Pařížská streets.

Cameras will also be placed in the areas near the Municipal House, including Revoluční, Králodvorská and U Obecního domu streets, and around Těšnov, including Petrská Street.

So far, Schwarzenegger has only filmed in Beroun, and that was in a 2015 commercial. According to the production schedule, the second season of FUBAR could appear on Netflix sometime in 2025.

In Česká Lípa, a group of wild boars caused quite a stir when they unexpectedly wandered into a local theatre during a live performance.

The seven boars made their way through the historic town centre, seemingly taking in the sights before entering the Jiráskovo Divadlo Theatre, where the opening of the new season was underway.

The surprising encounter took place on the evening of Thursday, September 5th.

“We were hosting our first performance of the year when the boars suddenly appeared,” joked Mayor Jitka Volfová. “We laughed, saying they came to check out the theatre that’s been nominated for the Building of the Year 2024 award — and perhaps to sample the new bar as well.”

Despite the amusement, police were unable to determine where these unexpected theatre enthusiasts had come from. The effort to guide them back to the forest took about an hour.

“The boars were initially driven out of the theatre by staff members,” explained a representative from the local law enforcement.

“By that time, municipal and national police patrols, along with city forestry staff, were already searching for them. The herd was eventually escorted out of the city and back into the forest.”

Fortunately, the unusual incident ended peacefully, with no injuries reported among the people or the boars.

While the boars’ unexpected visit brought a touch of the wild to the theatre that evening, it seems both species enjoyed a brief and harmless “cultural exchange.”

airBaltic has confirmed that two of its aircraft, named Kunda and Püssi, will be operating on the new direct Prague-Vilnius route starting on March 30, 2025.

The announcement was made on Friday, September 6.

However, these aircraft will not have a fixed schedule for Prague flights. Instead, their use will vary, depending on the carrier’s operational needs at any given time.

“The plan remains unchanged. All airBaltic A220-300 aircraft will be deployed according to operational requirements and will be available on all routes across the airline’s network,” the airBaltic press office told Novinky.

In August, airBaltic held an online vote allowing the public to choose names for all 48 of its aircraft, with voters selecting from a list of real Baltic cities.

Due to the efforts of Czech internet users, the Estonian city of Kunda won the first place (in Czech, “Kunda” is a vulgar term for female genitalia).

The Estonian city of Püssi, whose name can also provoke giggles in Czech, secured the second position.

The first of these newly named aircraft are expected to take flight in early 2025.

Prague’s towers welcomed nearly 400,000 visitors from home and abroad in July and August, a 5% increase on the same period last year, with Petřín Observation Tower, the Mirror Maze on Petřín Hill, and the Old Town Hall leading the way.

Prague City Tourism, the company in charge of Prague’s towers, saw 17% year-on-year growth at the Old Town Hall. This was driven in part by the tourist service and original souvenir shop that opened here last autumn.

One of the most popular Prague towers is always Petřín Observation Tower, which welcomed more than 130,000 visitors from home and abroad during the holiday season. It ranks among the five most frequented monuments in Prague over the longer term.

The Mirror Maze on Petřín (86,342) and the Old Town Hall (84,525) are the towers attracting the second and third most tourist traffic in Prague.

The guided tour featuring the Astronomical Tower in the Clementinum also registered a year-on-year increase, with over 32,000 visitors in July and August.

As for the stone towers, such as the bridge towers and the Powder Tower, visitor numbers were around the same level as they were during last year’s holidays. Scaffolding was put up at the Powder Tower over the summer to begin work on fixing up its exterior. What the city does here will help it decide whether to undertake a general overhaul of the tower at some point in the future.

“We’re really happy with the number of visitors to the heritage sites we manage, especially given the scorching weather over the holiday period. The highest number of holiday visitors was recorded in the second week of August,” says František Cipro, Prague City Tourism’s chairman.

In 2023, 1.8 million people visited the towers managed by Prague City Tourism, with the company paying CZK 94 million to the city.

Prague towers’ great summer season was partly down to the thorough preparation that went into it. Before the main holiday season gets into full swing, the company runs regular customer service training for tower staff. This helps them to deliver outstanding customer service to visitors even during the busiest months.

A new statue of the iconic gymnast Věra Čáslavská, created by renowned artist David Černý, now stands in Prague.

The statue, which originally made its debut at the Czech House during the Olympic Games in Paris, has been moved to the Czech Republic, where it was recently unveiled at the Tyrš House in Prague.

The artwork was initially meant to be showcased at the Tokyo Olympics, but delays caused by unforeseen circumstances led to its unveiling three years later in Paris.

“Věra was thrilled by the idea and said it was wonderful that there would finally be a piece of the Czech Republic in Tokyo,” Černý shared, recalling the gymnast’s words before her passing in 2016.

Standing ten meters tall and painted in the colors of the Czech tricolour, the statue quickly caught the eye of both Czech and French spectators under the Eiffel Tower.

Now, this remarkable tribute has found its way to Prague, where it was formally unveiled at Tyrš House in the city’s Újezd district, an area closely associated with Čáslavská, who trained there during her illustrious career.

“The statue is fascinating because, depending on the angle, only one figure is visible while the other seems to vanish. It’s an impressive sight, and I encourage everyone to come and experience how she seems to spin,” said Jiří Kejval, Chairman of the Czech Olympic Committee.

The statue, a fitting homage to the seven-time Olympic champion, will be on display at the Sokol headquarters in Újezd for at least a year, giving admirers a chance to celebrate the legacy of one of the greatest athletes in Czech history.

A new street in Prague 7 has been named after Nicholas Winton, who relentlessly cajoled and shamed immigration authorities to provide visas for 669 children, sparing them the horrors of the Holocaust.

Jan Čižinský, the mayor of the Prague 7 district, spoke of Winton’s “heroism, courage, and humility”. When complete, the street will pass by the railway station and memorials to “the dark side of world history”.

The naming of the street coincides with the 85th anniversary of the last planned Kindertransport from Prague, which was prevented from departing due to the outbreak of the second world war. The 250 children onboard the train were deported to Nazi concentration camps; two survived the war.

Winton’s heroic actions were depicted in a recent film, One Life, starring Anthony Hopkins. The former stockbroker, who was knighted in 2003 and nominated for the Nobel peace prize in 2008, died in 2015 at the age of 106.

Among those attending the naming ceremony in Prague on Tuesday were four surviving “Winton children”, members of Winton’s family, and a delegation from the Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR).

Michael Newman, the chief executive of the AJR, said: “It is hugely symbolic that [Winton’s] endeavours are recognised and celebrated as well as to acknowledge the heroism of many others with whom he worked.

“In remembering Sir Nicholas, we also honour the parents who sent away their children to an uncertain future as well as the foster families who gave sanctuary to the youngest victims of Nazi oppression. It is our fervent hope that the salvation of the Kindertransport will never again be needed.”

Winton’s actions in 1939 were unacknowledged until television personality Esther Rantzen brought together dozens of “Kinder”, their children and grandchildren with Winton for a remarkable episode of That’s Life in 1988.
