Many cities have iconic spots where tourists flock to take playful photographs, often transported by tour buses.

Take Pisa, for example, where visitors use perspective tricks to appear as though they are holding up the leaning tower. In Prague, a similar scenario unfolds with the Dancing House, where the favored pose is “kicking the building.”

Recently, Prague City reseeded the lawn at Jiráskovo náměstí, which had been damaged by tourists taking the classic photo to share on social media. While the area is currently fenced off, it is expected to reopen to the public soon. The municipality plans to implement some restrictions to protect the newly planted grass.

Andrea Zoulová, spokesperson for Prague 2, stated that the municipality has been warning about the park’s poor condition, vandalism, and frequent disorder since 2018.

“Following an agreement with Prague 2’s management and complaints from citizens, we have revitalized the grass around the monument,” said Vít Hofman, spokesperson for the municipality.

Access to the area is currently restricted by mobile fences, and the lawn is regularly watered. Once the grass has grown sufficiently, the public will be allowed to return.

However, Hofman mentioned that some restrictions will remain to protect the new lawn. The entire revitalization project, including regular watering and securing the area, cost about CZK 200,000.

Plans are also underway to revitalize the entire plaza. “We have surveyed the monument’s foundation in collaboration with the Capital Gallery and the Department of Monument Conservation. We are finalizing the project documentation to apply for a combined zoning and construction procedure,” Hofman explained.

If everything proceeds smoothly, Prague 2 should receive an application for a joint planning and building permit later this year. The reconstruction of Jirásek Square itself, with the City of Prague as the investor, is expected to begin in two to three years.

If you are a fan of landscape architecture and nature in general, you should visit Průhonice Park. This architectonic gem is a member of the UNESCO world heritage.

Průhonice Park in the UNESCO List

You can find this masterpiece of European landscape architecture in the outskirt of Prague, in a small village called Průhonice. Its 250 hectares present a unique combination of native trees and plants together with introduced species, especially from the Mediterranean.

Story of Průhonice Park

The idea came from Count Arnost Emanuel Silva Tarouca, whose family origins trace back to Portugal. He fell in love with countess Nostic who owned the park. Since Arnost was a passionate politician and a dendrologist, he turned his passion to the Průhonice Park.

Thanks to his knowledge and passion for landscape architecture, you can enjoy the beauties of the park in every season of the year. Spring is unique with blooming rhododendrons, summer is fresh with all its greens, autumn is vibrating with its orange and red colors, and winter is charming, especially with the snow cover.

The only place that is not open to the public is the Chateau since it is the headquarters of the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Prague Airport is facing issues again. On Friday, July 19, the global check-in system used by several airlines failed, causing some flight delays.

However, affected flights at Prague Airport are being processed using an alternative system or manually. Departures to Amsterdam and Zurich have been suspended.

Prague Airport announced the situation on the social network X. The computer system failure is affecting airports worldwide, including those in Europe, the United States, and Australia. Some airports have even temporarily halted operations.

“EasyJet flights from Prague to Amsterdam and Swiss flights to Zurich have been suspended due to a global system outage, which is beyond Prague Airport’s control. Passengers are asked to be patient as there may be delays and slower check-in times. Affected carriers are managing the situation with alternative methods,” said the spokeswoman Klára Divíšková.

“It will be delayed, but hopefully, I will leave today,” said a passenger named Nikola in Terminal 2. The words “delay” and “delayed” were frequently heard from the crowds. Despite the delays, the check-in halls seemed normal, with only a few warnings about canceled flights on the information boards. Groups of people waited longer than planned.

Airports, banks, hospitals, media outlets, and businesses around the world ground to a halt on Friday as a result of the same worldwide IT services outage, which also impacted global customers of Microsoft’s Azure and Office365 services.

Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity firm with thousands of customers globally, admitted that a defect in a software update had caused the outage, according to Euronews Next.

Korea and the Czech Republic agreed to expand bilateral traffic rights for flights from four to seven weekly, the Korean Transport Ministry said Friday, as part of a broader effort to support the two countries’ $17 billion nuclear reactor project in the European nation.

The decision was reached during a Korea-Czech aviation meeting held in Prague from Wednesday to Thursday, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said.

Traffic rights, determined through intergovernmental negotiations, are allocated by each country’s government to their respective airlines.

The expansion agreement marks the first increase in traffic rights between Korea and the Czech Republic in 26 years, as they had been fixed at four weekly flights since 1998.

The Czech Republic is currently connected to Korea by a single direct route — Korean Air’s Incheon-Prague service, which was launched in May 2004 and has carried 1.5 million people.

Czech Airlines operated flights from June 2013 for about seven years, but the service was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, a codeshare agreement with Korean Air remains in place, which allows travelers to book flights and accumulate mileage through Korean Air when traveling to a third European country via Prague on Czech Airlines.

Over 100 Korean companies, particularly in the automotive and semiconductor sectors, are present in the Czech Republic.

On Wednesday, a consortium led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) was selected as the preferred bidder to build two nuclear reactors in Dukovany.

The aviation meeting was part of the consortium’s “industrial cooperation package,” aimed at supporting its bid for the nuclear project, the ministry explained.

“The increase in traffic rights will enhance aviation cooperation and facilitate broader economic, cultural and human exchanges mediated by our nuclear cooperation,” said Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Park Sang-woo.

“We will continue to identify promising cooperation projects and exert every effort as Team Korea to ensure successful contract negotiations between KHNP and the Czech authorities.”

Technological progress, globalisation, and demographic trends are shaping the demand for specific skills and knowledge in the Czech market.

This is also reflected in the wage levels across various sectors. While some fields are experiencing rapid growth, others are stagnating.

Top Professions with High Earnings

While the exact ranking of the highest-paying professions for 2024 is still uncertain, trends from previous years and the current labor market situation provide insights into who will likely earn the most. Traditionally, top-ranking professions include IT specialists, healthcare professionals, managers, financial experts, and lawyers.

The IT sector continues to thrive, with high demand for skilled professionals such as software developers, data analysts, and cybersecurity specialists. Healthcare also requires a high level of expertise, making surgeons, dentists, and anesthetists among the highest-paid professions.

Leadership roles, which carry significant responsibility and require a broad skill set, are also well-compensated. These include positions like company directors, finance directors, and marketing managers. Similarly, the financial and legal sectors, including lawyers, judges, and prosecutors, have long been associated with high salaries.

Median gross wage/salary in H1 2023

1. Top executive of a large company (240 690 CZK)
2. Chief executive (140 304 CZK)
3. Surgeon (119 601 CZK)
4. IT or communication technology manager (121 604 CZK )
5. Finance or insurance executive (120 826 CZK)
6. Senior civil servant (110 879 CZK)
7. Legal executive (84 015 CZK)

On the other hand, the lowest-paid professions include couriers, construction workers, cleaners, and gardeners.

Median gross wage/salary in H1 2023

1. Courier/parcel delivery (18 005 CZK)
2. Building construction worker (19 697 CZK)
3. Cleaner (20 574 CZK)
4. Gardening helper (23 012 CZK)
5. Waste sorter (24 465 CZK)

Pay levels are not solely determined by occupation but are influenced by various factors. Education plays a significant role, with higher education often leading to better-paid positions.

Experience also impacts salary, as more experienced workers are more valuable to employers. Specific skills and abilities, such as knowledge of foreign languages, communication skills, creativity, and leadership, are also crucial.

Location significantly affects earnings. Employees in Prague tend to earn the most, while those in the Karlovy Vary region have lower earnings. Urban areas generally offer better salaries compared to rural areas.

Riegrovy Sady, named after the famous Czech politician F. L. Rieger, is one of the most popular spots in Prague.

Spanning about eleven hectares, it features expansive grassy areas with stunning views of the city skyline, children’s playgrounds, a dog meadow, and several garden restaurants.

This year, Riegrovy Sady, affectionately known as Riegráč by Prague residents, is celebrating a significant milestone. Opened to the public exactly 120 years ago, the park remains a vibrant part of the city today.

“We strive to maintain the park’s appeal. A portion of Riegráč is privately owned, but the city manages the area and deserves much credit for attracting visitors,” said Jan Korseska, the mayor of Prague 2.

When it first opened, Riegrovy Sady featured historic farmhouses and fenced gardens. Under architect Leopold Batek, the area transformed into a modern city park.

From its inception in 1904, the park has drawn visitors, especially to its restaurant housed in one of the original farmhouses. Today, the 11-hectare park continues to undergo necessary modernizations.

“We started at the monument to Mr. Rieger on Polská Street, improving irrigation, adding palisades, enhancing road networks, landscaping, and planting new trees and shrubs. Last year, we upgraded the area along Vozová Street, and the final phase near Chopin Street is coming up,” Korseska explained.

Riegrovy Sady serves as a green center in Prague’s Vinohrady district. It attracts dog walkers, lovers, joggers, and students to its English-style orchards. The park also houses one of the most significant Sokol buildings in the world.

“We’re concerned about funding because maintaining the park is costly. We believe the state should support it, as it’s a source of national pride. The Sokol organization, with its deep historical roots, provides essential physical education for young children,” said Mayor Korseska.

The Czech Government is pressing ahead with plans to launch Europe’s first fully legal commercial cannabis market, similar to those seen in Canada and many parts of the US.

Czechia already has some of the most lenient cannabis laws in Europe. The use, possession and cultivation (for personal use) of cannabis were decriminalised in 2010 while sale and importation are still strictly forbidden and can result in a prison sentence.

Czechia was also one of the first countries in Europe to permit a legal medicinal cannabis market, patients began to be issued their prescriptions in 2013.

The plan aims to move cannabis entirely away from the legacy market and effectively take control out of the hands of criminals as part of the country’s proposed ‘Cannabis Management Act’.

The Czech Government announced it would begin plans to legalise cannabis in line with Germany in late 2022. Since then, drug expert Jindřich Vobořil has been tasked with drafting a bill that would bring about a new law.

However, earlier in 2024 it was reported that plans had been scaled down. According to Business of Cannabis, two bills were written, with the weaker plan designed to put pressure on opponents and judge public support for a more ambitious commercial market, including dispensaries, which will tackle the illicit market.

“The cannabis black market is growing across Europe. In the Czech Republic, we seem to have reached its ceiling, and I don’t see many other options to prevent its functioning other than to take its demand and put it in the hands of legal sellers,” Vobořil said in early 2023.

The writers of the new draft of the cannabis bill are keen to ensure criminals can’t occupy the space between those consumers who wish to cultivate cannabis at home for personal use and those who simply want to purchase their cannabis products safely and legally.

They plan on doing this by involving companies such as multi-national American cannabis company Curaleaf and the huge Canadian business Tillray who are already operating in Czechia’s medicinal market.

To further ensure cannabis stays out of the legacy market the new draft bill of the ‘Cannabis Management Act’ contains a suggestion to operate a ‘seed to sale’ tracking system similar to one currently in use in Switzerland that will enable authorities to monitor the entire chain from manufacture through to sale to the end consumer.

The draft bill states that residents who wish to either cultivate or purchase cannabis will have to apply to the authorities for a license for each specific category, they will only be allowed to hold one license at a time. Those applying must be over the age of 18, be willing to pay a joining fee which is intended to go to the state budget, and agree to the limit imposed on amounts they can buy and the level of THC in the products.

Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel located in Prague’s Lesser Town district recently reopened its St. Thomas Brewery Bar for public, adding one sidewalk entrance to the venue for easier navigation of its guests.

The cellar housing this famous bar dating back to 1352 is now open not only for the guests yearning for extraordinary experience and pint of the dark St. Thomas lager, but also for private groups.

Rentals of the St. Thomas Brewery Bar are possible based on the availability for up to 55 guests with pricing tailor-made to each event organizer’s requirements.

Apart from the original beer brewed here since the 14th century, the Bar, designed as an artificial grotto with stylish cubistic furniture, offers traditional Czech dishes and is currently one of the richest historical landmarks of the Augustine Hotel Prague.

In the 16th century, during the reign of the well-known emperor Rudolf II, the local brewery became an exclusive supplier of beer to the Prague Castle. The chronicles say that “when Czech kings were at the Prague Castle, they would only drink St. Thomas beer!“.

Nowadays, the local award-winning Matuška micro-brewery produces both draught and bottled St. Thomas beer uniquely for Augustine Hotel.

The hotel’s owners obtained the recipe in 2009 when the Augustinian monks agreed to rent a part of the St. Thomas Monastery and connect it with a hotel complex in exchange for renovation of their church.

The hotel has been created from a set of seven buildings, many of which have historical significance, and are interconnected with a part of the monastery that is still inhabited by four Augustinian monks.

There’s also the St. Thomas Church and a unique 13th-century library, which can be visited on special guided tours.

Lidove noviny (LN), the oldest Czech daily in print, is to close down the print version by the end of August.

LN’s publishing house Mafra announced in a press release on July 16 that “considering the development on the market” and “internal surveys” Mafra “decided to strengthen the opinion content” of the web version.

The changes come less than a year after the Agrofert conglomerate, set up by the Czech opposition leader and billionaire ex-Prime Minister Andrej Babis in the late 1990s, sold Mafra to former PPF manager Karel Prazak’s Kaprain group.

The iconic Saturday intellectual supplement Orientace (Orientation) will become part of the Saturday edition of LN’s sister daily MF Dnes, accused by critics of backing Babis’ populist ANO party and serving as its mouthpiece.

LN was founded in 1893 and the lengthy list of its editors includes world-renowned Czech writer Karel Capek. LN’s renewal at the end of the 1980s became one of the symbols of the crumbling communist regime, which ended in 1989.

Agrofert purchased Mafra in 2013, which is seen by Czech media experts as a milestone year during which local business actors took over much of the media ownership landscape, which mirrored the populist surge in the country and which is now seen by international media observers as one of the key risks to media plurality in the country.

Last year’s sale of Mafra to Kaprain took place alongside Kaprain’s purchase of the Synthesia chemical plant and was seen as Babis’ effort to diffuse his conflict of interest after the tighter legislation on politicians’ involvement in the media was passed by the Czech parliament last year.

According to a new analysis by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), the number of foreigners in Prague has been steadily increasing.

From 2001 to 2022, the foreign population rose from 61,000 to 345,000, making one in four Prague residents a foreigner.

This growth has significantly influenced the city’s demographic development over the past two decades. Most of these foreigners are of working age, providing essential labor for the capital’s economy.

A 450% Increase in Foreign Residents

Data from the Foreign Police shows a more than 450% increase in foreigners in Prague from 2001 to 2022. Today, foreigners consist of 25% of the city’s population. This trend accelerated in 2022 due to the influx of refugees from Ukraine following the war.

Origins of Prague’s Foreign Population

Of the 345,000 foreigners in the city, nearly 40% of all foreigners in the Czech Republic reside in Prague. The largest groups come from Ukraine (170,000), Slovakia (31,000), and Russia (27,000), with significant numbers from Vietnam (15,000). There is also a growing presence from Romania, Bulgaria, India, and the Philippines.

The Young Foreign Population

Foreigners in Prague tend to be younger, particularly those aged 24-42. This contrasts with the higher age categories of Czech citizens. According to the 2021 Census, the average age of foreigners in Prague was 35.5 years, compared to 41.9 years for the entire population and 42.9 years for Czech nationals.

Prague in 2050

Prague’s unemployment rate is nearly zero, yet tens of thousands of job vacancies remain. The demand for labor drives the continued growth of the foreign population.

The study predicts that by 2050, the number of foreigners in Prague will rise to between 598,000 and 920,000, though the growth rate will slow over time. Significant increases are expected in both younger and older age groups, with a relative decline in the currently dominant 30-40 age group.
