UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) was founded on November 16, 1945, as a result of the Second World War, which had just ended.

The organization’s main goal was to strive to maintain international peace by fostering cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture and by advocating respect for human rights.

UNESCO is based in Paris and today has 195 member countries and 9 affiliated members. The Czech Republic became a member state on February 22, 1993.

In July 2021, UNESCO decided on new sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. The Czech Spa Triangle and the Primeval Beech Forests of Jizerské hory became new successfully nominated Czech Republic sites.

At present, there are 15 Czech sites in total on the list:

Historic Centre of Český Krumlov

Český Krumlov is a city in the South Bohemia region, situated on the banks of the Vltava river. Its historic centre was added to the UNESCO List in 1992. The city is most famous for its castle complex built in the 13th century which boasts Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements. Český Krumlov is a beautiful example of a Central European small town originating in the Middle Ages which underwent Renaissance and Baroque transformations yet its architectural heritage has remained intact over the centuries.

Historic Centre of Prague

Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its historic center has been recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1992. The most notable monuments in Prague are Hradcany Castle, the Saint Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge and several churches and palaces, most of them built in the 14th century under Charles IV.

Historic Centre of Telč

Telč is a city in the southwest tip of Moravia, halfway between Prague and Vienna. It is considered to be an architectural and artistic ensemble of outstanding quality thanks to its beautiful setting combined with well-maintained Renaissance buildings with various facades. The historic centre of the city, surrounded by fish ponds and city gates, has retained its unique shape over the centuries and was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 1992.

Pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora

The pilgrimage church was constructed on a star-shaped plan in the early 18th century. The monument is the most unusual work by the great architect Jan Blazej Santini, whose highly original style falls between neo-Gothic and Baroque. The church was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 1994.

Kutná Hora

The historic centre of Kutná Hora reflects a very specific medieval structure of the city ground plan, determined by the town’s wealth and prosperity based on mining. Kutná Hora includes many high-quality buildings, but is most famous for the Church St Barbara and the Church of Our Lady at Sedlec which influenced the architecture of central Europe. The Church of St Barbara is considered to be a jewel of the late Gothic period. The Cathedral of Our Lady at Sedlec was restored in line with the Baroque taste of the early 18th century. The city of Kutná Hora was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 1995.

Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape

At 200 km², Lednice-Valtice is one of the largest artificial landscapes in Europe. The cultural landscape located in southern Moravia was constructed by the ruling dukes of Liechtenstein between the 17th and 20th centuries. The design of the castles of Lednice and Valtice and the surroundings combines Baroque, Classical and Neo-Gothic styles with the English romantic principles of landscape architecture. One of the arguably most beautiful places in the Czech Republic has been added to the UNESCO List in 1996.

Holašovice Historic Village

Holašovice is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional central European village. The village is situated in South Bohemia, near another UNESCO Site, Český Krumlov. Holašovice includes numerous farmsteads, a chapel, a cross, a forge and a small fish-pond. The village is characterized by vernacular buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries which make Holašovice an outstanding example of traditional rural settlement in central Europe. Holašovice village was added to the UNESCO List in 1998.

Gardens and Castle at Kroměříž

The castle and the gardens in Kroměříž, a town in Moravia, were included in the UNESCO List in 1998 thanks to their beautiful symbiosis of light, plants, art, and architecture. These two sites are considered one of the best examples of Baroque style residence and its associated landscape of the 17th and 18th century.

Litomyšl Castle

Litomyšl Castle features Renaissance and High-Baroque concepts, being an arcaded castle which later evolved under the influence of new artistic movements. Among the former aristocratic residence surrounded by the garden, the entrance courtyard, and the outbuildings, visitors can find the Brewery within the castle complex, the birthplace of Bedřich Smetana, the Czech famous composer. Litomyšl Castle lies in the Pardubice Region, the eastern part of Bohemia. It has been inscribed on the UNESCO list in 1999.

Holy Trinity Column in Olomouc

The Holy Trinity Column is located in the historic centre of Olomouc city in Central Moravia. It is the most outstanding example of the Moravian Baroque style which developed in the 18th century in Central Europe. The Holy Trinity Column has a high symbolic value because it represents the religious devotion and the sense of pride of the inhabitants of this city. The Holy Trinity Column was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 2000.

Villa Tugendhat

The Tugendhat Villa was designed by the architect Mies van der Rohe in the 1920s and it played a significant role in the worldwide diffusion and acceptance of the Modern Movement at that time. Mies van der Rohe applied the innovative and aesthetic concepts of the Modern Movement to the design of the Tugendhat Villa to satisfy new lifestyle needs by using the opportunities provided by modern industrial production. Villa Tugendhat is located in Brno, the second-largest Czech city. It is on the UNESCO List since 2001.

Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica in Třebíč

The ensemble of the Jewish Quarter and the Basilica of St Procopius in Třebíč is a significant example of the coexistence and interchange of values between Jewish and Christian cultures over the centuries. The Jewish Quarter and the nearby Jewish cemetery are an exceptional testimony to the cultural Jewish traditions in central Europe. The Basilica of St Procopius, on the other hand, is an example of Western architectural influence in Central Europe. The cultural heritage in Třebíč is inscribed on the UNESCO List since 2003.

Landscape for Breeding and Training of Ceremonial Carriage Horses at Kladruby nad Labem

The property is situated in the eastern part of Bohemia by the Elbe plain. In 1579, an imperial stud farm was established there for the purposes of breeding and training kladruber horses, a type of horse used in ceremonies by the Habsburg imperial court. Today, the property consists of flat, sandy soils and includes fields, fenced pastures, a forested area and buildings, all designed for the same task. The landscape is one of the top horse-breedings institutions in Europe. The property was recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site just recently, in 2019.

Krušnohoří Mining Region

Krušnohoří/Erzgebirge is a mountainous region lying in south-eastern Germany and north-western Czech Republic. The area, also called as Ore Mountains, has been the most important source of silver ore in Europe between 1460 and 1560 and gave rise for technological innovations. The region is a significant reminder of the outstanding role and international influence of the Ore Mountains as a trigger for technological and scientific innovations from the Renaissance up to the modern era. The region was inscribed on the UNESCO List in 2019.

The playgrounds from our childhood don’t exist anymore. Technical specifications have been drastically changing our surroundings.

If you find an exception, you will be filled with happiness. The playground Kaštánek (The little chestnut) in Stromovka park was designed by recognized sculptors Olbram Zoubek and his wife Eva Kmentová in 1961 and is also an open-air gallery.

The historical residential buildings nearby and Prague’s “Central Park” make the place remarkable. The playground consists of a climbing tower, eight low climbing frames, and four climbings bars made of scaffolding pipes.

Most of the concrete parts were painted white. The small plastic geometric details are framed by rich colors – red, blue and yellow. The whole concept is simply picturesque.

The playground was sensitively restored for the first time in 2017 with the assistance of Olbram Zoubek.

Today, it is considered important proof of the artistic feeling of the early 1960s when this period allowed more freedom in the creation of art on playgrounds than in the galleries. It is not common to find such preserved art in public places.

I took the photo in freezing weather and appreciated that I could absorb the atmosphere completely alone. Otherwise, it is always full of children.

The eagerly awaited government meeting, which was to seek an answer to the sharp rise in prices of gasoline, diesel, and, secondarily, other energies, ultimately bore little fruit.

For the time being, excise tax and VAT on fuel will not be remitted, nor will the government resort to capping prices at gas stations.

Instead, the ministers announced two minor, albeit welcome, changes: they will abolish the obligation to mix bio-components into fuels and temporarily introduce a road tax on vehicles not exceeding 12 tonnes unladen weight, but it is desperately insufficient.

According to available reports, there were two arguments as to why the government decided to only adopt these two measures. One of them says that if the government announced a price cap, it would encourage stocking up on fuel, lines at gas stations, and consumer panic. The second reason concerns excise duty and VAT on fuel.

With more than 100 billion crowns a year, taxes on gas and diesel are among the main sources of the state budget’s income.

By cutting the excise tax, the government would thus lose tens of billions of korunas at a time when it wants to reach a balanced budget as quickly as possible.

The government could adopt cuts in some areas of the budget

Currently, the state receives 40 percent of the price of diesel paid by drivers and 46 percent of the price of gas. The prime minister, every government member, and every politician who describes proposals on cutting fuel tax as populist, by definition, defends all other budget expenditures as something more important than brutal prices for drivers.

Only the populist does not care about the serious consequences of his actions, they say. So those 66 billion crowns of non-investment subsidies for private companies, which remain in the budget adopted on Wednesday, are probably of vital importance to our economy and society, right? And presumably, the state could also not do without the additional 6,000 people that are to expand the ever-growing civil service this year? There is plenty of expenditure that could be cut from the budget with consequences for far fewer people than is affected by rising energy prices.

The government also managed to use this crisis to allow not mixing bio-component in fuels and thus wiped out the bio-ingredients part of Agrofert, the business of former prime minister, Andrej Babiš. This move has blown up into unprecedented proportions in recent days with critics suggesting there was political motivation behind the decision.

Nonetheless, the government has limited options to score points with the citizens and compensate for not capping fuel prices.

It can only catch up at the EU level by withdrawing the electricity sold by the Czech ČEZ energy company to the EU electricity market or demand reform of the ETS. However, this is largely dependent on mood swings in other member states.

New research has uncovered the most common thing Czechs are dreaming about when they’re asleep at night and it’s honestly super relatable.

Using Google search data, bedding company Secret Linen Store found that the most common thing to dream about in the Czech Republic is… dogs.

Secret Linen Store used Google search data to find out what the most commonly searched-for dream meaning was in over 180 countries across over 390 dream subjects.

As dreams are often our worries or deepest thoughts emerging, a few eventful years have clearly led to more active minds during sleep, resulting in people turning to Google to find out the meaning behind their dreams.

What Do The Most Common Dreams Mean?

Ranking as the most common dream globally, dreams about our canine pals are often related to themes of loyalty and protection regarding our relationships. Perhaps it’s whether someone is looking out for us, or is a threat to us – judged by how friendly the dog in the specific dream is.

However, residents of countries that include the UK, France and Switzerland bring things even closer to home than the family dog, as they’re among the 18 countries that dream most frequently of being pregnant. Dreams about being pregnant are often linked with experiencing something new in your life, and hint that you are growing as a person.

Other animals that featured in the most common global dreams are cats, fish, mice and spiders. If, like in countries such as Poland and Bulgaria, cats are often appearing in your dreams, then it could mean that someone is deceiving you as cats are said to be associated with bad fortune and deception. Whereas if it’s fish that are featuring in your night time adventures, then it may mean that you are moving towards a challenging or difficult situation.

Relationship-related dreams are also quite common, with dreams about exes common in Mexico and Japan. Methodology

Worldwide search data analysed by Secret Linen Store in February 2022 using Google Keyword planner. Each country’s most common dream was found using annual search data in each country for each dream type from a seed list of 392 common dream subjects. *Not all countries provided enough search data to be featured – only countries with enough data to analyse were included.

Western-touted assertions about Russia’s plans to launch ‘an invasion of Ukraine’ on February 16 led to another fiasco for US intelligence agencies, President Milos Zeman of the Czech Republic said in an interview with the Mlada Fronta Dnes newspaper, published on Thursday.

During an interview with the newspaper “Mlada fronta Dnes”, Zeman compared those allegations to the United States’ past claims about Iraq and Afghanistan.

“My view [of the situation around Ukraine is that] there will be no war because Russians aren’t insane to launch an operation that will cause them more damage than benefits,” Zeman pointed out.

“As for US intelligence agencies, this is their third fiasco. The first was the war in Iraq, where no weapons of mass destruction were found. Afghanistan was the second one, as [they] claimed that the Taliban would never take Kabul. And now this is the third one,” the Czech president noted.

Zeman said that five days before February 16, he had received a secret message about alleged preparations for a Russian invasion of Ukraine. “It came from the CIA. I don’t ask the CIA what sources of information it has. But given the three [fiascos], I doubt the quality of these sources,” the Czech president stressed.

However, he did not exclude a surge in tensions in Donbass. “I can’t rule out a local [military] conflict on the border of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics [with Ukraine] but it’s something completely different from a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Zeman maintained.

He emphasized that Russia had started to withdraw troops from the Ukrainian border after completing drills on its own soil, which disproved assertions coming from Western politicians about the risk of a conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The West and Kiev have been echoing allegations about Russia’s potential invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov castigated these claims as “empty and unfounded”, serving as a ploy to escalate tensions, pointing out that Russia did not pose any threat whatsoever to anyone.

However, Peskov did not rule out the possibility of provocations aimed at justifying such claims and warned that attempts to use military force to resolve the crisis in southeastern Ukraine would have serious consequences.

While in previous months the level of inflation in the Czech Republic was largely equivalent to that in the EU, in January the consumer price index exceeded the eurozone’s average, the Czech Statistics Agency announced on Monday.

Eurozone inflation was at 5.1 percent in January. Meanwhile, in the Czech Republic, it reached 9.9 percent.

It is expected that inflation next year could be between 8.6 and 10.9 percent on average and as high as 11 percent. This is due to higher energy prices, and change in price lists of goods and services and the expected rise in food prices.

In December, annual inflation was 6.6 percent, and according to CZSO data, annual inflation was above ten percent last time in July 1998.

“It is difficult to estimate because prices are constantly changing in the economy. This year, it is all the more complicated, as price pressures are very widespread and the revaluation of January prices can be really significant, “said Jakub Seidler, chief economist of the Czech Banking Association.

He says that a 30% year-on-year increase in electricity and gas prices can be expected, as well as a significant increase in food prices. “It is thus very likely that year-on-year inflation will reach over ten percent, and we rather expect a value close to 11 percent, ” he added.

According to Akcento analyst Miroslav Novák, estimating January consumer inflation is always a bit of a lottery. “For the beginning of the new year, companies regularly adjust the price lists and this year’s upward changes in prices for goods and services were really drastic. He expects January inflation at 10.2 percent.

The increase in the prices of other items such as heat, fuels or water and sewage could also be stronger than usual at the beginning of the year.

Budvar, the Czech brewer that has been in a long legal dispute with U.S. company Anheuser-Busch over use of the “Budweiser” brand, has registered a record output for the second straight pandemic year.

Budejovicky Budvar NP, a 126-year-old state-owned brewery, said its output rose 4.6% to 1.8 million hectoliters in 2021, according to preliminary results released on Thursday.

The brewer’s exports were up 11.3% last year, director Petr Dvorak said. The figures “surpassed our expectations,” Dvorak said.

Budvar sells its beer in some 80 countries. It said in a statement that practically all its major markets, including Germany, Britain and Slovakia, contributed to increased sales.

Revenues also hit a record last year, growing 10.4% to reach 3.171 billion crowns in 2021.

Complete results, including profit figures, will be released later in the year.

The pandemic particularly affected the domestic market with demand for beer in tanks and barrels declining as bars and restaurants were closed for some time and access for unvaccinated people was limited.

“We have a very difficult year in all aspects behind us,” Dvorak said.

The brewer has expanded in recent years to be able to produce more than 2 million hectoliters of beer a year. That investment made it possible to react to changes in the markets amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Have you tried getting a Uber or Bolt lately? Chances are you may have had a hard time with them.

With the pandemic and lockdown slowly abating, restaurants have opened, and new regulations allow people to organize various social events.

This also means that there’s an increase of people who need to be transported around the city. That benefits both traditional and alternative taxi services, such as Bolt or Uber.

The coronavirus has, however, significantly rattled even this market, and the taxi services are plagued with a deficiency of drivers.

Some left for another profession, and closed borders made moving from countries outside of the EU to work here much more complicated. People from third world countries that worked in the evenings are sorely missed by alternative taxi services.

Customers thus noted longer waiting times and higher prices, which can even be twice or thrice as high as original costs. This is especially prevalent now that people are returning home in large clusters after the end of Euro football matches.

“In 2020, many drivers stopped driving because they couldn’t count on getting enough trips to make it worth their time,” Dennis Cinelli, Uber’s vice president for mobility in the US and Canada, wrote in a blog post. “In 2021, there are more riders requesting trips than there are drivers available to give them—making it a great time to be a driver.”

Uber claims that the demand is “coming back,” though how much we won’t know until the company reports its first earnings report for 2021. It seems logical that as vaccination rates continue to go up, more people will start using Uber and Bolt again.

But that will depend on many factors, including offices reopening, leisure activities returning, business travel rebounding, and people starting to return to their daily routines.

Last year, both companies were focused on reducing costs, and often that meant actively constraining its supply of drivers.

With wait times increasing, the companies will now have to reverse course and spend money to encourage drivers to come back to the app.

Even though we can spend the summer in cinema halls, an outside alternative with a unique atmosphere certainly won’t offend. Which places in Prague are worthy of a visit?

Welcome to the Czech Republic is a collection of three short films that explore the Czech identity from a variety of different viewpoints. Next in line is Tarantino, Another Round (Chlast), and other blockbusters. Tickets will be available for CZK 80.

MeetFactory continues with the trend of films in the fresh air, and that in cooperation with ČRo Vltava. This time, MeetFactory has moved to a former distillery. Every Wednesday from 9:30, it will show one chosen film for free. It will also offer a fully-stocked bar.

The first showing will occur on the 2nd of June, with the documentary King Skate starting off the marathon. You can also expect showings of The Other Side of Hope (Druhá strana naděje), And Then We Danced (Dokud se tančí), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Tenkrát v Hollywoodu) and a whole host of other films.

Among the titles included in the 12 projects that will run every Thursday is the satirical musical Kouř, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: a Space Odyssey (2001: Vesmírná odysea), the new LGBT film from Berlin Cocoon (Léto v Kreuzbergu), a musical romance from the late Soviet era Summer (Léto), the documentary Searching for Sugar Man (Pátrání po Sugar Manovi). Movies will also be played at the request of audience members.

You can also expect to enjoy a movie-packed summer in the Kinská gardens. It will begin on the 4th of June with short films by Pragueshorts Film Festival. Children won’t be overlooked, either; they will have an animated story, The Prince’s Voyage (Princova Cesta), prepared for them on the first Saturday of June.

You’ll be able to watch Třeštíková’s new film, Anny, on the 10th of June, depicting sixteen years in the life of a sympathetic woman that makes her living as a prostitute. The program for the 18th of June then contains the film White on White (Bílé na bílé), as well as a discussion with the director, Viera Čakanyová, after the end of the screening. Entry is CZK 90.

Even summer in Zbraslav won’t be lacking in cinematic experience. For CZK 100, you can expect a June program with Charlatan (Šarlatán) by Agnieszky Holland, Loners (Samotáři), Pulp Fiction (Pul Fiction: Historky z podsvětí) and Droneman (Modelář) with Kryštof Hádek and Jiří Mádl.

Kino Spirála

The summer cinema Spirála is also making a comeback. It is still unknown what films we can eagerly wait for, as the organizers will make the program public later. The screening will begin on the 24th of June and end on the 19th of September with its own weekend film festival. Free entry.

Few things can spoil the urban landscape like improperly placed advertisements. This is especially valid for a historical city like Prague, whose beauty has few rivals in Europe.

New adverts have to be in accordance with the “Manual for a Cultivated Prague“.

The document, which stresses that “Prague is not Disneyland”, also offers guidance on how to obtain the required advertising permits, navigate the approval process and access a consultation.

Entrepreneurs will be able to ask for financial assistance from 15-19 July, September 2021. The subsidy will be paid for the already present advertising signs within the following year.

“Money can be used for work relating to graphic design, creation, and installation. This can include for example a signboard, a company sign, display cases, menu, and boards or changes to the shop windows,” describes Prague spokesman Vit Hofman.

The guide covers the acceptable sizes, materials and positioning of shop advertisements and highlights both good and poor examples. For example, the city urges businesses not to cover shop windows with photographs or stickers.

“The center of Prague is advertising for the entire country, but for a long time, it hasn’t been a particularly attractive sight. Flashy advertising, the legendary plastic of trdelnik, mass-produced signboards which you are equally likely to find in a historic alley and a housing estate… We are trying to gradually do something about it – and one puzzle piece in this plan is also a grant program. We want to support entrepreneurs that want to have tasteful and high-quality advertising for their establishments,” says Prague council Hana Třeštíková (Praha sobě).

Entrepreneurs will get grants for work that began and was completed between September 1 2020 and September 29, 2021. The subsidy will cover up to 70% of the costs, with a maximum of CZK 200,000 in total.

The expected overall amount of funds allocated in the budget towards financing this program is CZK 5 million. The applicant can be an occupant of a building in which they are the owner, renter, or lessee.

“Our goal is for public spaces to have the highest quality possible. On a walk through the center, both locals and tourists often feel like they’re in Disneyland.
