Lucerna Palace Roof Opens to the Public: Views, Picnics, and More!

From the viewpoint, visitors can see the statue of Jan Žižka, Karlín, Žižkov, Petřín, Hradčany, the National Museum, Letenské sady, Masarykovo nádraží, Florenc, etc.  After the reconstruction, the National Agricultural Museum (NZM) opened its roof for the summer. People can climb the stairs to the green roof garden and take the elevator. It offers a unique view of Prague, a picnic lawn where you can go through a bosque, a flower show.  “We also have beehive hives and space for panel exposition. The Czech Nature Photo exhibition is currently on display,” says Lenka Martinková from NZM. Children enjoy themselves by watching trains departing from the tunnel near the main station. From the end of August, the roof of the Lucerna Palace will open for viewing. The rooftop will include Café Ondřej Kobza, film showings, and people will be able to host home-based lectures, as well as dawn or yoga concerts accompanied by Bach’s cello music. Czech and Slovak Presidents Mark Centenary With a Vintage Train Ride

Czech president Miloš Zeman and his counterpart Andrej Kiska took a symbolic ride on a vintage train from the Czech town of Hodonín to the Slovak town of Topoľčianky (Nitra Region) on July 29. Both towns have a symbolic meaning, as Hodonín was the birthplace of first Czechoslovak President Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and Czechoslovak presidents used to have a summer residence in Topoľčianky. In Topoľčianky, they dropped in at a first-republic-style fair and visited the National Stud Farm and Topoľčianky Castle. Kiska and Zeman laid flowers at Masaryk’s statue there and signed commemorative papers to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic. Part of Mucha's Slav Epic on display From Today

Part of Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic goes on display at Obecní dům from today July 19, 2018, to January 13, 2019.  Due to size limitations, only the smaller ones will be shown. The remaining larger canvases are currently on display in Brno at the Brno Exhibition Center (BVV) until December 31, 2018. Mucha worked on the Slav Epic in 1910 – 1928. In 1913, Mucha already publicly announced that the work would be donated to the city of Prague, with the condition that the city place the paintings in a special pavilion built at its own expense. Mucha painted the cycle for almost 18 years starting in 1910. It is comprised of 20 large paintings inspired by Slav mythology and the Czech nation’s history. Until 2011, the paintings were on display at the Moravsky Krumlov Chateau, south Moravia. In 2010 they were entered in the list of national heritage. The Hussites Are Coming to Vítkov!

You are all invited to witness the Battle of Vítkov this Saturday 14 July, from 10 am to 8 pm on Prague 3’s Vítkov Hill. Over 100 performers, dressed in historical battle costumes, will remind audiences of the heroic defense of the Hussite garrison. The Hussites were a religious group, who fought for their religious and political beliefs. The group followed the teachings of Jan Hus, a Czech priest, who publicly preached his criticism of the Church for its nepotism, corruption, and violence. His attacks on the Church were received with hostility in Rome. He was arrested after a meeting with the Church Council of Constance, and sentenced to death as an incorrigible heretic. He died at the stake on July 6, 1415. His death today is commemorated as a national holiday. A realistic reconstruction of the famous battle is an annual event honoring the Battle of Vítkov Hill, the most famous battle of the Hussite Wars. On July 14, 1420, a handful of Hussites led by the general Jan Žižka from Trocnov, defeated the Austrian and Merssen Crusaders. Leaders Commemorate Czechoslovakia's Centenary in Paris

Leaders of France, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia have met in Paris to commemorate the centenary of the creation of the Czechoslovakia military, which prompted the country’s independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On June 30, 1918, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire was collapsing, France became the first country to formally recognize Czechoslovakia’s new government, paving the way to the country’s proclamation of independence later that year. The country peacefully separated into two independent Republics in 1993 after the fall of communism in Europe. In a joint declaration with Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini and Czech counterpart Andrej Babiš Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron called on Europe to find a way back to “unity” despite the migrant crisis. After the meeting, they signed framework agreements on strategic partnership outlining future cooperation in security, the fight against terrorism, research and development and student exchanges. United Islands Has More Than Music

The United Islands of Prague festival offers more than just music. The festival does present both local and international acts in a wide range of genres so people can discover new sounds, but there is also a large side program. Entry to the festival including the side events is free. The 15th edition of the festival will take place June 22 and 23 in Prague’s Karlín district. The center of the festival will be Křižíkova Street, which will turn into a pedestrian zone on Saturday, offering sports, drawing, circus, film, and educational or creative workshops. Karlovy Vary Festival to Honor Tim Robbins

Oscar-winning actor, director, screenwriter, producer and musician Tim Robbins is to be honored at the Karlovy Vary film festival. The festival, which opens its 53rd edition later this month, will give him the event’s prestigious Crystal Globe for Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema. Oscar-winner Robbins, known for a string of memorable performances including in Mystic River and The Shawshank Redemption and for directing movies including Dead Man Walking, will present two of his directorial efforts at the Czech festival: Bob Roberts and Cradle Will Rock. He will also appear on stage for a special concert performance with his band Tim Robbins And The Rogues Gallery Band. Other prominent guests announced by the festival on Tuesday include American director and ex-member of British comedy troupe Monty Python, Terry Gilliam. Mucha's Slav Epic Gets New Home

The giant Slav Epic series by Czech Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha has finally secured a permanent home after 90 years in temporary depositories, including a hiding place from the Nazis under a pile of coal. Mucha (1860-1939) said in his testament that he wanted the allegoric cycle of 20 paintings – which range in size from 20 to 50 sq m – depicting Slav myths exhibited in Prague on condition that the city would build a home for the work. Last Thursday, City Hall voted to secure a home for the work that Mucha considered his masterpiece. “I see this as an overdue debt that we owe Alfons Mucha,” said Prague mayor Adriana Krnacova. The new exhibition hall will be located inside Prague’s Lapidarium, a 19th-century Art Nouveau building that has been abandoned for decades. Prague believes its reconstruction will help revitalize the area, which has the potential to draw tourists and locals. “This is the best solution for the Slav Epic,” said Jan Wolf, Prague councilor in charge of culture, adding that the building could also host other works by Mucha. Prague Rooftop Cinema Starts its New Season

Summer cinema sessions will start on June 19 right on the rooftop of Prague Exhibition Palace (Veletržní palác). That is a really unusual and inspiring place to watch well-known Czech and foreign films on the original motion picture film of the 16 and 35 mm format and enjoy the view. The cinema will be opened until October; the movies are scheduled every Tuesday and Wednesday (beginning at 21:30).  The cinema hall has been there since the Palace was opened. It was located in the basement of the building and called Kino Favorit, and then renamed to Kino Veletrhy. The cinema was, unfortunately, destroyed by fire in August 1974. The cinema schedule can be found here. You can reserve the tickets online here or buy them if any is left right there, on the spot. The adult ticket is 120 kč, students, and pensioners – 100 kč. The Rolling Stones' Prague Show Has a Few Rules

The Rolling Stones are coming to Letiště Letňany in Prague on July 4 for what will be the largest concert of the summer and likely the largest the city has seen since the Stones played outdoors in 2003. Well over 50,000 people are expected to attend.   The organizers announced the opening acts plus some very important rules that concertgoers will need to know ahead of time, in particular, strict size restrictions on bags and travel info.   The Rolling Stones are currently on their No filter tour. Czechs Mark 76th anniversary of Lidice Massacre

The 76th-anniversary ceremony commemorating the victims of Lidice which was razed to the ground by the Nazi regime on June 10, 1942, was held on Sunday. Several government ministers attended the memorial ceremony. Representatives of political parties, embassies and various associations, as well as war veterans and international guests laid wreaths at the common grave of murdered people. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said in his speech that the shocking crime of the Nazis should be a warning for future generations. Lidice Memorial Director Martina Lehmannova emphasized that the name Lidice became a symbol for all who wanted to fight for freedom, democracy, equality of people and mutual respect. Sunday’s ceremony, according to her, was a gathering of people who respect human life regardless of nationality, skin colour or belief. The Nazis burned the village down in 1942 in retaliation for the assassination of Nazi Deputy Reichsprotector Reinhard Heydrich by Czechoslovak paratroopers. All the man in the village were shot dead, women sent to a concentration camp, most of the children were sent to the gas chambers.
