Enjoy the Music Concerts (For FREE!) at Wallenstein Garden

From May 3rd to September 29th, Wallenstein Garden hosts classical music concerts mostly on Thursday afternoon (5 pm) and occasionally on Saturday afternoon (2-3pm). You can listen for free to performing brass bands, choral groups, jazz bands and many others. The garden was created at the same time as the Wallenstein Palace in the early 17th century, in the lower part of the Malá Strana District. It displays a fine example of Mannerist layout and decoration, with very diverse sections. It is dominated by an aisle lined with bronze sculptures, an impressive Sala Terrena, and an amazing artificial grotto. Readers in the Czech Republic Are Growing

Nearly four-fifths of Czechs read at least one book a year. Ten or more books can be read by 22 percent of people at the same time. This results from data for 2016, collected by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) and published by Statistics & My magazine. The share of readers in younger age groups has been increasing in recent years. While in 2011 at least one book read by 68 percent of the Czech population, their share grew to 73 percent last year. In about a third of cases, people reached one to four books.  In terms of age, the most active readers were among the students. “Only ten percent of students older than 18 years said they did not read any books in 2016,” explains Dedera, of the CZSO’s Department of Statistics, Health, Culture and Social Security. According to statistics, it is only possible to speculate how many of these books have been read in the framework of compulsory study reading. Tip for the Weekend: Pražský Majáles

This weekend is the festival Majales, (translated from Latin as “May”) which marks the Czech student celebration for the arrival of May and hedonism of student life. Over the past years growing up into the biggest Czech festival and is organized in Prague, Brno and Hradec Králové. Majáles is launched by the ceremony of building Májka maypole, which starts the “Month of students”. Everything culminates with the main celebration day with Majales Parade and final Majales Open-air festival. Majales also became influential in the development of counter culture in the Czech Republic after the communist censorship of the early 1950s. A famous year was 1965, when beatnik poet Allen Ginsberg visited this city and found himself elected the ‘King of May’ by the students of Prague. He was then deported for allegedly corrupting the city’s youth with his poetry he wrote for the festival. In the 1980s and 1990s, the festival continued to flourish in popularity and culture, with the former president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus becoming the first King of spring after the revolution. INTERVIEW: Giudi & Inude, Future-Pop Promises

-How was born the project and what’s your current plan? GIUDI: For 4 years I was a frontwoman in a pop-rock band, it was an amazing time and gave me a lot of experiences, but musically I grew up in a different direction than the rest of the band. I had a need to express how I perceive music and feel myself. INUDE: Inude was born in the South of Italy in 2014 by an idea of Giacomo and Flavio and Francesco joined us later. We played together since we were young and now we are working hard on our new album that is almost done. -Tell us some stories from your past gigs in Europe, especially the ones in the Czech Republic. Things to Know: The Prague Meridian

Before the technological revolutions that seemingly shrunk the world, Prague, like many other industrial cities, relied on its own local time. To determine high noon, the city used a shadow cast by a Marian column that fell directly upon the meridian of 14°25’17″ East each day. This occurred from 1652 to 1918, from when the meridian was set into the stones to when the Marian column was torn down by a mob in 1918 during a demonstration against the Habsburg Monarchy. Though the column has been gone for nearly a century, the meridian line is still visible. Keep an eye out for a thin brass strip flanked by plaques on either side, written in Latin and Czech. Loosely translated into English, they say, “Meridian, according to which time in Prague was determined.” They were placed alongside the time strip in the 1990s. Though the meridian is no longer a marker of high noon, it’s a subtle reminder of a time when the sun’s shadow was a vital tool in tracking the hours within a day. Open House: You Can Visit 65 Buildings For FREE!

The fourth edition of Open House Praha will take place May 19–20, and allow people to see inside more than 65 buildings, and spaces not usually open to the public.  It will be possible to visit places with exceptional interiors, interesting history and unusual views of Prague usually closed to the public. This year 24 buildings participate at the event for the first time. Those of you who are interested in the history must see Palace Ericson at Old Town or Governor´s Summer Palace which history date back to the Middle Ages. If you prefer architectural pieces from the period between WW1 and WW2, organizers of the event recommend you to see the tenement house by architect Kamil Roškot. There is no entrance fee. You should registrate just in the case you are planning to visit Main Point Karlín. (This registration will be possible from May 10, 12.00). Maps and other information will be available at the event’s info center. On May 12 You Can Visit State Rooms at the Prague Castle For FREE

Ceremonial spaces in the castle not normally open to the public will be opened – for example, the Rothmayer Hall, the Spanish Hall, the Rudolph galleries and salons southern wing of the New Palace. These rooms are used for ceremonies or representative purposes and they are located in the middle and southern part of the New Palace. From 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. one can visit for free: Old Royal Palace incl. National Museum Buildings Open FREE of Charge

The National Museum will be celebrating its 200th anniversary today and tomorrow with free admission and special programs.  Seven buildings of the National Museum in Prague, including the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, the Museum of Music and the museum’s depositories in Prague’s Horní Počernice and Terezín will be accessible free of charge until Sunday evening. The Náprstek Museum on Betlémské náměstí currently has an exhibit on Native Americans as well as its long-term exhibits.  The Museum of Music on Karmelitská street will have tours, some of which require online registration. There will be a lecture on historical dancing as well. You can visit for free also the Bedrich Smetana Museum at Novotného lávka and the Antonín Dvořák Museum. Czech Towns and Cities Mark Holocaust Remembrance Day

A number of Czech towns and cities mark today the Holocaust Remembrance Day with traditional outdoor ceremonies at which the names of Holocaust victims are read out by politicians, church dignitaries and leading cultural figures. Between 1940 and 1945, 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz, most of them Jewish. The prisoners at Auschwitz included 50 000 citizens of Czechoslovakia, about 6 000 of whom survived. The Nazis murdered six million people of Jewish origin during the Second World War. The interwar Jewish community of Czechoslovakia was 350 000 strong, 250 000 of whom died during the war. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah. When the actual date of Yom Hashoah falls on a Friday, the state of Israel observes Yom Hashoah on the preceding Thursday. When it falls on a Sunday, Yom Hashoah is observed on the following Monday. April 26: Rare Garden Light Show in Prague

On April 26 from 8 pm to 10 pm the Baroque Vrtbovská Garden will be festively lit for an illuminated view of Prague by night. The festive lighting of this garden takes place two times a year – in the spring and in the autumn. You will be surprised by the magic and beauty of this place. It offers an amazing view of the Prague Castle and part of the historical center. Entry to the terraced Italian garden is through Vrtba Palace from Karmelitská street. The garden cuts into the Petřín slope and stretches from the courtyard of the palace to the southwest.  The creation of this magnificent palace garden is associated with the construction boom around 1720. The garden was designed by František Maxmilián Kaňka, who first renovated the palace for Jan Josef, Count of Vrtba and then created the garden.  More information here. Unique Gondolas From Venice to Appear in Prague

Two unique ceremonial gondolas will leave Venice for the first time in history to show off before Navalis Saint John’s Celebrations on May 15.  In Venice there are only 10 ceremonial gondolas, which are called “Bissóna“. The Bissóna is an ancient Venetian ceremonial boat, rowed by eight oarsmen in costume, lavishly decorated with allegorical sculptures and gold-plated carving. It was used in parades or to welcome important people. The two gondolas will leave Venice thanks a special permit from the mayor’s office. The organizers of Navalis insured them for Kc 30 million. The feast celebrate the anniversary of canonization of Czech patron St John of Nepomuk, the patron of all people from water, and it takes place always on the eve of the St John’s day – 15th May.  Saint John of Nepomuk is also the patron of all gondoliers and one of the eight patrons of Venice. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is the only Baroque statue situated right on the bank of the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Bizzarre National Habits: Czech’s Whipping Women at Easter

The Czech Republic has a rather unusual tradition on Easter Monday. Boys get willow branches, braid them together into whips and decorate them with ribbons to whip girls with for luck and fertility. During communism in the Czech Republic, many religious connotations were suppressed, and so Easter started to be seen as an occasion to have some fun time. On Easter Monday men use to whip the girls’ bottom with special branches, called “pomlázka”. Pomlazka is a kind of a whip composed of osier twigs braided together. Men can travel around the city in groups and go to visit some relatives, friends, and they can whip all the women they want. This thing is called ‘Easter birching’. It’s supposed to be a gentle whip but sometimes it happens that the touch is not so light as expected. Anyway, the girls have to bear the whipping and they can throw buckets of water at them (if frozen it’s better) and this way the morning becomes very funny and hilarious.
