June 18, 1942: The Heroes of Operation Anthropoid Met Their Deaths

“We are Czechs! We will never surrender, did you hear that? Never!”  Those were the last words of the paratroopers from the crypt in Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius Church in Resslova street in Prague. On the 18th of June 1942, seven paratroopers lost their lives, among them were Warrant Officer Jozef Gabčík and Staff Sergeant Jan Kubiš, who were sent to eliminate the SS Obergruppenführer and General der Polizei Reinhard Heydrich, one of the highest-ranking nazi officers. In October 1941 after three years of occupation, the exiled Czechoslovak government in England decided that a show of strength was required. Operation Anthropoid was a World War 2 military operation with a specific assignment for two young allied paratroopers – Jan Kubiš and Josef Gabčík – namely the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The Nazis wanted immediate payback and two villages were proven to have supported the attack on Heydrich or to have actively supported the resistance. On June 10th the people of Lidice were rounded up, any male over 15 was shot, almost everybody else sent to death camps (young babies were adopted) and the village was destroyed. The First Troja Music Festival to Offer Six Concerts in Unique Venues

From June 21-23, the inaugural Troja Music Festival will be held, co-founded and artistically directed by renowned violinist Josef Špaček. The festival promises extraordinary musical experiences with six concerts in unconventional venues and a welcoming, informal atmosphere. Attendees can look forward to performances by top musicians from the Czech Republic and abroad. The festival ensemble, led by Josef Špaček, will be joined by the Ivan Herák Dulcimer Band, the Epoque Quartet, mezzo-soprano Bella Adamova, and actor Martin Myšička, who will perform at the closing concert. Each concert’s genre and repertoire will match the atmosphere and character of its venue. The opening concert will be held in the Imperial Hall of Troja Castle. Prague Streets Will Come Alive This Weekend With Art Festival

Prague Music Festival (‘Praha Žije Hudbou’) will take place between the 7th and 8th of June. 200 musicians will take part in the ninth year of the street art festival, playing in the streets, squares, and parks of Prague. Praha Žije Hudbou is a multigenre street art festival whose aim is to present street art to the public and support the idea of busking. More than 120 artists and such names as Ben Cristovao, Igor Orozovich, Michal Horák, Jiří Schmitzer and Marsell Bendig with Lucie Bikarova will perform at more than 20 venues on the streets. You can also look forward to the Brass Avenue brass showband, the modern Roma band Le Chhavendar, the experimental string quartet BBQ, the digital singer-songwriter Mat213, the talented Rodan and the Latin American rhythms served up by the Cumbia Cooperativa. Night of Museums 2024: Visit David Černý’s Musoleum for a Reduced Price

Residents and visitors of Prague can enjoy a visit to the Musoleum Museum with a reduced ticket price (CZK 150) showcasing the works of renowned Czech artist David Černý on 15 June. The museum will open its doors from 19:00 to 22:00 as part of the “Night of Museums 2024” event. No pre-registration is required—just come and enjoy the art. On regular days, admission to the Musoleum costs 300 Kč. The museum, which opened on 1 April 2023, spans five floors and covers 1,200 square meters. Bruce Springsteen’s Prague Concert Rescheduled: New Date Announced

Musician Bruce Springsteen was supposed to perform in Prague on Tuesday, May 28, but due to vocal cord issues, he had to postpone the concert. Fortunately, he will not disappoint his fans and will come to the capital with his show on Sunday, June 15, next year. Organizers have confirmed that the original tickets are valid for the new date, with no need for exchanges. Ticket refunds are available for the next three months, until September 3, 2024. Springsteen is one of the world’s best-selling artists, with over 140 million records sold worldwide, including more than 70 million in the United States. Free Concerts in Prague’s Waldstein Garden: Schedule for June

The season of free music concerts at the beautiful Valdštejnská zahrada (Wallenstein Garden) in Prague continues. The events are organized by the Senate of the Czech Republic. Entrance is free. The concerts are held every week, with the starting time always the same – 17:00. The concert schedule for June is as follows:   The garden was created at the same time as the Wallenstein Palace in the early 17th century, in the lower part of the Malá Strana District. It displays a fine example of Mannerist layout and decoration, with very diverse sections. It is dominated by an aisle lined with bronze sculptures, an impressive Sala Terrena, and an amazing artificial grotto. During the last renovation in 2012, the appearance of the gardens was restored into the original state from 1920’s. Milada Horáková Trial Began 74 Years Ago

Milada Horáková (25th December 1901– 27th June 1950) was a Czechoslovak politician who was executed for alleged conspiracy and treason during the communist political trials of the 1950s. Milada Horáková was born in 1901, in what was then still the Austrian-Hungarian Habsburg Empire, into a middle-class family. She managed to study law at a time when very few women did and became active in women’s emancipation movements. Czechoslovakia, which emerged in 1918 from the Habsburg Empire, allowed women’s vote as early as 1920, ahead of many other European states, thanks to Senator Františka Plamínková, the founder of the Women’s National Council for whom Horáková started working in 1924. From 1927, she worked in the social welfare department, promoting reforms aimed at women’s equality. During World War II, she entered the resistance movement against the Nazis, along with her husband, but both were arrested in August 1941. Under the Nazi Occupation: resistance and incarceration Shortly before the Occupation, she was forced to leave the Prague City Council. During the Occupation she joined the resistance group We Remain Faithful, finding secret housing for illegals and passing on information to an espionage agency.
