EXHIBITION: The World of Tim Burton Arrives in Prague Next Year

Batman, Alice in Wonderland, and the Nightmare Before Christmas. What do all these films have in common? They all belong to the world of renowned filmmaker Tim Burton, who entertained the imaginations of children and adults alike for decades. Luckily, Burton will bring his fantasy world to Prague next year! From the first of May until the end of September 2024, an exhibition will be displayed in Prague’s Municipal House at Namesti Republiky, as part of a world tour where Burton’s work has featured in places such as Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Mexico. If you’re a fan of Burton’s work, this is the place to be next year. “The exhibition features over 530 works, including storyboards, sketches, scene designs, puppets, and photographs from timeless film classics such as Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mars Attacks! and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas to contemporary films like Dumbo and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” reads the website. Prague’s O2 Arena to Host Multi-Genre Concert in Lead Up to Christmas

On 21 December, Prague’s O2 Arena will host a Christmas concert featuring more than 130 artists from the Czech music scene. Seven well-known artists, including Thalia Award-winning actress Eva Burešová, Ondřej Ruml and Kateřina Maria Ticha, accompanied by 70 musicians from the Hradec Králové Philharmonic and the Permoník Karviná Choir, will put on stage a show featuring 27 songs from various genres, including classical music, pop and jazz, in new and innovative arrangements under the baton of Stanislav Vavřínek. “We are not preparing a classical Christmas concert, but a musical experience,” said arranger Jan Lstibůrek. “The audience will listen to Christmas melodies and themes they know from the radio, but for the first time ever in symphonic arrangements written specifically for particular composition performers, philharmonic and choir, and for the unique space of Prague’s O2 Arena.” Along with the sound, the evening will be illuminated by visual components of color and an extraordinary stage design. “At one moment, modest and intimate, the next moment, monumental, so that you feel like you are in a musical temple. Prague Planetarium Will be the Most Modern in the World

The Prague Planetarium is undergoing an unprecedented renovation as it updates its outdated display system with cutting-edge LED Dome technology. This technology will include 45 million LEDs distributed across the entire dome, making the Prague Planetarium the biggest and most contemporary in the world. The new system is anticipated to last up to 25 years, with outstanding picture contrast and minimal upkeep expenses. The new projection system, according to Jakub Rozehnal, head of the Prague Planetarium, will enable for a degree of quality and contrast not possible with traditional systems. The expenditure includes new air conditioning for waste heat recovery, ductwork, and hall machinery, as well as an increased number of chairs. The proposed rebuilding and modernization, which has received a CZK 250 million subsidy, is scheduled to take place from mid-May this year until spring next year. During this time, visitors will have restricted access to certain areas of the dome. The Machine has forged a 30+ year reputation for extending the musical legacy of Pink Floyd. November 11: Commemorate Veteran’s Day by Buying a Poppy

On 11 November, Czechia will honor the memory of those who fought for the nation on International Veterans Day, celebrated worldwide on the anniversary of WWI’s end. A traditional ceremony is held each year at the national memorial located on Vitkov Hill, attended by Czech politicians and military, paying respects to the fallen with a minute of silence. People will take part in the commemorations all over the country by purchasing poppies, which were known to be the first flowers that grew on the WWI battlefields after the war had come to a close. In Brno, they are planted in Moravské Náměstí square, and these poppies can, in fact, be bought in many locations throughout Prague and Czechia. The locations will be organized by the Prague NGO Post Bellum, founded by a group of Czech journalists and historians who set out to document the memories of witnesses of important historical phenomena/events of the 20th century and promote awareness to the general public. The Boss is Back: Bruce Springsteen Returns to Prague After 12 Years!

Bruce Springsteen is returning to Prague after 12 long years for his only concert in Central Europe, which will also be his biggest concert in the Czech Republic. The concert at Prague’s Letňany Airport will take place on 28 May 2024. Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band delivered “The Greatest Show on Earth” (Billboard) across Europe this past summer, and they’ll make a triumphant return to the continent in 2024 with a just-announced 22-show stadium run. 24th Edition of QFF Mezipatra Will Take Place on November 2-17

The 24th edition of the Mezipatra Queer Film Festival finds itself at Crossroads. This year’s theme alludes to everyday small decisions, as well as major life intersections that can unexpectedly alter our lives. The audience can explore 24 feature films and 45 short films. The festival’s grand opening will take place on November 2nd at 7:00 PM at the Lucerna cinema with the Italian love story of two seventeen-year-olds. Fireworks (Stranizza d’amuri), based on true events, immerses viewers in the story of a forbidden love between two young men in 1980s Italy, complicated by the strongly homophobic environment of a Sicilian town. The 27 Crosses on Prague’s Old Town Square

On the pavement in front of the Old Town Hall, there are several rows of crosses made of white cobblestones in memory of this mass execution. But why are there 27 crosses? In November 1620, a great battle took place on the White Mountain. Almost 50,000 mercenaries took part in the battle, the number of fallen soldiers is unknown, it`s estimated between 2 and 5 thousand men. The battle lasted two hours and, despite its short duration, influenced Czech history for 300 years, including violent re-Catholicization. By February 20, 1621, a total of 61 persons were arrested and kept in prison in the White Tower at Prague Castle. Each of the imprisoned men had to answer 236 questions. Some confessed to high treason, some begged the emperor for mercy, and some laughed at the questions. Some of the detained men were tortured during interrogations. The trial with them lasted until March 29. However, it did not proceed fairly – the defense did not get to speak at all, and the court’s statement that the guilt was “generally known” was enough to prove guilt. 30 men were sentenced – 27 to death, and 3 to be expelled from the city.
