On February 25, 1948, the Communist Party, with Soviet backing, assumed undisputed control over the government of Czechoslovakia, marking the onset of four decades of undisguised communist rule in the country. After World War II through May 1946 After World War II, Czechoslovakia looked favorably on the Russians, who had liberated them. In fact, the Communist Party had had a solid following in the country from the 1920s, when the nation was democratic. Eduard Beneš, who became the postwar president, had signed a friendship treaty with the Soviets while working with the government-in-exile in 1943. The Czechoslovak army and local government structure were modeled after those in the USSR. By the beginning of 1946, there was no USSR military presence in the country, yet Communists were well-represented in the government with Klement Gottwald as the Prime Minister and other Communists looking after the ministries of the interior, agriculture, information, defense, and education. The results of the May 1946 elections demonstrated the popularity of the Party, as it nabbed 38 percent of the vote. The Communist Party’s popularity drops From May 1946 until July 1947, things seemed to be running smoothly in Czechoslovakia. Then the nation wanted to obtain Marshall Aid....

Replicas of the most famous works by Renaissance masters, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raffaello, and Sandro Botticelli, will occupy the space of Mánes in Prague for three months. This exhibition has already been visited by over half a million people in Austria and Germany. The most challenging work for the organizers was transporting the nine-meter-high sculpture of David, which was the first work to be installed in the gallery. Covering the glass ceiling of the gallery was as well a technical challenge because the parameters of the exhibition require dim light. The exhibition will also feature replicas of other famous works, including da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, seen by over ten million visitors each year at the Louvre in Paris, the Sistine Madonna by Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, and Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. “The painting The Birth of Venus is considered a milestone in the history of art. Visitors to the exhibition will be impressed by its original size of 278 x 175 cm. The monumental painting was created at the end of the fifteenth century and has been exhibited in the famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence since the beginning of the...

The festival’s extensive program will not only include concerts in clubs and non-traditional venues, but a number of workshops with artists, film screenings, an exhibition and an audiovisual theater premiere in collaboration with the Spitfire Company will also be included. A big foreign name is kept as a surprise by the organizers. “Our goal is to offer visitors a comprehensive audio-visual experience, which opens up a new multidimensional experience in connection with music. I believe that music develops a person internally, supports his mental development. I wish that people would be able to get out of their musical stereotypes and try to go to...
For anyone nostalgic for the popular Signal festival or seeking to be immersed in artistic play with darkness and light, the newly opened Lumia Gallery in Prague’s Celetná Street is a must-visit. The gallery replaces traditional wax mannequins with interactive projections, water simulations, and sensory tunnels. Lumia Gallery has been open for over three months and was created by Filip Kočík, also known as Feex, a photographer, artist, and producer who had been considering opening the gallery for almost a decade. He collaborated with Michal Škorpík, academic sculptor Jakub Chocholoušek, and lighting engineer and digital artist Ati Sphere on the project. “I was doing new circus, and then I became interested in the possibility of combining acrobatics and dance with projections, so I started to develop it. There aren’t many schools for that, so you have to learn how to use all the tools yourself. The most important thing is to have a hacker mindset because the whole process of creating is based on a visual idea that you need to solve as a problem. You have to invent a completely new system to make it work,” explains Ati Sphere, who has created most of the works for the gallery,...
