In line with the data provided by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the Czech Republic’s authorities have announced that all European Union and Schengen Area countries, with the exception of the Vatican City State, will continue to remain part of the dark red list. According to the latest update published by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, all EU/Schengen Area travellers will be required to present a COVID-19 pre-entry test for another week. The pre-entry testing requirement applies to everyone, including fully vaccinated and recovered travellers. Nonetheless, the Ministry has explained that EU travellers reaching the Czech Republic from a dark-red listed country are not required to present a test result upon their entry if they have already received a booster dose. “Only foreigners vaccinated with a booster dose have an exception if they are vaccinated in a country whose certificate the Czech Republic recognises,” the statement of the Ministry of Health reads. Children under the age of 12 are also exempt from the pre-entry testing requirement regardless of their country of origin. In contrast, stricter rules apply to unvaccinated and unrecovered travellers from the EU/Schengen Area. Except for having to present a pre-entry test,...
PRE, the Czech Republic’s third-largest energy company with around 800,000 customers, has announced that they will be raising their electricity prices from April 1. The new prices will be 25 percent higher on average. In May, PRE will also increase the price of gas, by an average of 30 percent. The change in the price of electricity does not affect those customers who have contracts with price fixation. In these cases, PRE will comply with all the provisions of the contracts without exception, according to company spokesperson Karel Hanzelka. Almost three-quarters of PRE’s customers live in city flats and use a single tariff rate for electricity. According to the company, the price for this category of customers will increase in the total monthly payment from 50 to 250 crowns. For other customers using electricity, for example for water heating, the price will increase again depending on the type of product and the amount of consumption by 100 to 400 crowns per month, the company said. For gas, the average increase will be around 30 percent, but it may vary depending on the type of consumption. The vast majority of customers will then pay about 100 to 300 crowns more per...

The Czech Republic will be able to cancel all coronavirus restrictions next month, Health Minister Vlastimil Valek said on Tuesday. “I believe that in March we will be able to cancel all [coronavirus] measures to the maximum. The current development of the epidemic and the forecast for the near future prove that [it is possible],” Valek said at a meeting with lawmakers. The minister also supported amendments to the controversial pandemic law, which entail a wider range of COVID-19 restrictions, including the introduction of mandatory testing of entrepreneurs, students, and teachers, as well as a separate set of measures by the defence and interior ministries. The legislation has caused a backlash from the opposition and Czech citizens, who have been rallying against its adoption, with the most recent rally held in front of the parliament on Tuesday. “If we do not adopt the pandemic law now, then in its current form it will cease to operate at the end of this month. As a result, the government and, specifically, the health ministry will remain ‘unarmed’ in the face of possible new variants of coronavirus or other viruses in the future. The Czech Republic’s government has agreed to end mandatory coronavirus testing at schools and companies this month, the prime minister said Wednesday. The testing “undoubtedly” helped slow down the spread of infections and prevented the health system from being overwhelmed, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said. “Given the development, we’ve decided to end the compulsory testing on Feb. 18,” Fiala said. All company employees have been tested twice a week while schoolchildren and all school employees have been tested once a week since Jan. 17. With 57,195 new cases recorded on Tuesday, the country registered a new day-to-day record, about 2,500 more than the previous record set last week on Wednesday. The seven-day infection rate grew to 2,483 per 100,000 residents on Tuesday, up from 2,318 the previous day, as part of a surge in cases caused by the omicron variant. Omicron is less likely to cause severe illness than the previous delta variant, according to studies. The Czech Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Czech Interior Ministry, other ministries and Jewish organizations are preparing a national strategy to combat antisemitism. It will focus on education, on the fight against hate speech on the Internet, and on legislation. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský (Pirates) made the announcement in a video post commemorating the Day of Holocaust Remembrance. “Remembering the tragedy of the Holocaust and bearing witness to it teach us to better recognize dangerous tendencies that turn toward terrible ends,” the chief diplomat said. According to Lipavský, research on antisemitism and extremism in the Czech Republic shows the country has a relatively low number of recorded incidents with an antisemitic subtext. “We can be proud of that, but even here the amount of speech and other forms of racial intolerance on the Internet is rising. This also applies to the Romani minority,” the minister added. The emergence of a new national strategy is being justified by this increase. The Czech Republic will host an international conference in November following on from the Terezin Declaration on Holocaust Era Assets and Related Issues, Lipavský added. The Czech Republic will be chairing the Council of the European Union at that time. The declaration was approved during the...
