Have you ever thought: “Do I need a therapist?”. Starting therapy may seem like a big decision. People often say to themselves that the situation is as it is and it is necessary to just carry on. How do we know when it is time to ask for help? Or what if you just feel that you need to share your thoughts with someone who will listen and understand…without starting therapy? Therapy in the Forest (Terapie v lese) could be the perfect starting point that will help you to understand yourself better. “I have been at a professional crossroads for about a year. A year ago, my business collapsed and I — exhausted, with a one-year-old son on my hands — was at the start of my profession again. I felt I needed closure on this topic. I expected to talk about my role as a leader; however, the journey with my therapist Hana completely exceeded my expectations. Very soon we got to my intimate topic, which is harmony between male and female energy,” says Šárka, who experienced a 3-hour-long forest journey with Hana, an experienced therapist. Therapy that doesn’t feel like therapy Therapy in the forest started in late...
Citizens can register and take part in this month’s challenge to not only get healthier but to also compete for rewards and prizes. This month, the Czech Republic launched a nationwide campaign to promote physical exercise and movement. The “10,000 Steps” challenge seeks to encourage citizens to walk regularly and adopt a healthier lifestyle. To further motivate people to participate, the challenge includes prizes and rewards which will be given to those who have recorded the highest number of steps at the end of the month. The campaign’s organisers – the Partnership for Urban Mobility – explained that the ultimate goal of this project is to inspire citizens to engage in more physical activity. They note that even though the challenge asks for 10,000 steps or 7.5 kilometres, far fewer steps are sufficient for an individual to feel and be healthier. How can you take part in this challenge? Citizens who are over the age of 18 can participate in this project by registering on “10,000 Steps” website here. Participants are given the choice to register as an individual or a team. Once you have registered for the challenge, you must record all of your physical activity on your profile by attaching...
The growing demand in the market has created room for a new type of service, such as zero-waste shops. To buy goods in these stores means to shop environmentally friendly products and make a massive difference to the collective global footprint. Zero waste shops have gained popularity in the past few years with a growing understanding of plastic pollution, waste issues, and global warming. Do you also think that there are too many packages, and do you want to try a change? Life without waste and excess plastic is not so tricky anymore – you can find several shops in Prague where you can buy zero-waste products for your household and yourself. What do you need to prepare for shopping in a zero-waste shop? More than with other purchases, it is essential to decide at home what and how much you want to buy. Why? Firstly, to have somewhere to store the goods. There is usually no other packaging in the store than the ones you bring. Containers can be different – sacks, glass bottles, plastic cans, or cans in which you store spilled rice or flakes at home. Secondly, we prevent unused food from ending up in the trash by...
Home to the world’s first Pilsner, the Czech Republic is internationally known as having the highest beer consumption per capita, a title held for over 20 years. As the pandemic has ravaged the tourism and gastronomy industries, beer purchases have also seen a sharp decline throughout the past year. Recently released data from the Czech General Directorate of Customs revealed that beer consumption decreased by 13 liters per capita last year. This works out to the average Czech drinking about 129 liters of beer in 2020 falling by 14 percent from the pre-pandemic era. This drastic decline in beer consumption can likely be attributed to the series of government-mandated closures during each wave of the pandemic since March of last year. While alcohol consumption, in general, went up during 2020, much less beer was being purchased than usual as many were deprived of opportunities for draft beer and resorted to drinking at home. Kegs have always accounted for the majority of beer sales far outpacing the sale of bottles and cans. With no mass gatherings for beer festivals, pubs and restaurants closing, and a compulsory lockdown in place, the demand for beer has steadily declined over the past year. The...

Article by Vita Cafnik, teacher at Cherry Tree, English speaking preschool in the heart of Vinohrady. We are all going through, what is quite possibly, one of the strangest times of our lives. The pandemic has uprooted, halted, and completely jumbled up our day-to-day. Everything, from work to leisure, has changed, and our lives started revolving around “pandemic-friendly” activities. We, adults, are undoubtedly facing all kinds of new challenges, and I am sure everyone’s sanity has been put to a test, or maybe more like a triathlon, in quite a few occasions in the past year or so. And if that is not tricky enough, adding the strain of pandemic on our children’s lives, might just move the situation out of the frying pan and into the fire. Kids have been affected by pandemic just as much, if not more, as adults have. Schools have closed their doors, changing not only the course of their education but completely halting other essential aspects of children’s lives, like socializing with peers, and all the informal learning and growth that goes along with it. Adding the cancellation of the majority of extracurricular activities, and we have an indoor tornado on our hands,...
Beer, the oldest known recipe in history, is a global obsession, but annual trends in consumption and cost vary from country to country. To find out just how much those costs might vary, Expensivity, an online money and finance resource, conducted comprehensive research to determine the cheapest and most expensive cities around the world to buy a beer in, both from the supermarket and at the bar. Expensivity found that Qatar has the most expensive beer in the world, costing an average of $11.26 per per 33cl (330ml) bottle. This is likely due to their 100 percent tax on alcohol imports ahead of the 2022 World Cup. Beer in China doesn’t look all that cheap either. But keep in mind that the money and finance site averaged the price of a hotel beer ($13.61) and a supermarket beer ($1.81). So it’s clear the steep prices are aimed at visitors. Germany Spends the Most On Beer Haitians just aren’t that into beer. Spirits account for a whopping 97% of booze consumed in Haiti, where people drink fewer than four beers per year on average, with an annual beer bill of $10.02. That’s the lowest beer consumption and spend in our study. At the other end of...
Article by Vita Cafnik, pre-school teacher at Cherry Tree, English-speaking preschool in the heart of Vinohrady. If you are thinking about setting on a marvelous journey of education with your child, you might find yourself overwhelmed with options. Prague truly has a lot to offer when it comes to early childhood education, and there are various things to consider when choosing a school best suited to your needs. If you appreciate nature and all it has to offer, and if you wish your child could spend more time outdoors, a Forest school might be the way to go. Our relationship with nature, and the way we introduce it to our children, set an example for their future and forms a bond that lasts a lifetime. By greeting the outdoors with open arms, Forest schools offer a beautiful gateway to learning, paved with wonder and discovery. The learning process of Forest schools has a long tradition. Originating in Scandinavian countries, it has since gained popularity all over the world. Including right here, in Prague. Focusing on outdoor education, Forest schools moved their classrooms into open-air settings by letting kids grow with nature and helping nature prosper by raising environmentally conscious kids....
Article written by Kathy Zabinski, Literacy Coach at International School of Prague Oral language, speaking and listening, is an important foundation for learning to read and write. Understanding this, the International School of Prague’s Early Childhood Foundation’s program provides young children with both informal and structured opportunities to grow as speakers and listeners. Children build their vocabulary, begin to internalize sentence structures, and develop listening skills to build social connections and to learn new information. This year our Early Childhood Foundations’ teachers have engaged in a professional inquiry exploring the relationship between oral language, reading, and writing. Working with renowned early literacy experts, Matt Glover and Kathy Collins, and collaborating with international school teachers around the world, we are studying how students tell stories. As Matt and Kathy write, “When we can notice and name how children are composing language in one area, we can use that knowledge to support how they compose language in another area.” For example, if we notice a child making connections across pages and using that to say more about each page in her writing, we can then ask her to try this when reading. Our professional inquiry with Matt and Kathy is focused on...
