Just days before the opening of the exhibition, the usually quiet Galerie Rudolfinum is suddenly full of energy. Staff gather for a preview tour of Beyond the City of Time, led by the artist himself, Sahej Rahal. I was fortunate to join the walkthrough, which suggests Prague’s art audience is about to encounter a striking blend of digital mythology and speculative storytelling. The Mumbai-based artist explains how his three-legged sculptures, AI-driven simulations and pigment paintings combine Indian folklore, video-game logic and science fiction to question how we perceive time and reality. For his Prague debut, Rahal has turned the gallery into a collaborative game environment, inviting visitors to shape evolving myths alongside unpredictable, creature-like forms that react to sound, movement and touch. Asked about his name, Rahal said it carries personal symbolism. “Sahej comes from the idea of the path of least resistance — my aunt chose it — while Rahal means traveller,” he explained. Originally trained as a fine-art painter at Mumbai’s Rachana Sansad, Rahal first considered engineering and has a background in programming. He eventually merged those interests. “Art school helped me improve my drawing, but I realised I could combine that with programming. Ultimately, I’m interested in...
Pizza prices across the Czech Republic rose by about 11.5 percent year on year, according to new data from Foodora. Despite the increase, the country remains among the cheapest markets in Europe where the delivery platform operates. The company’s Pizza Index, modeled loosely on global purchasing-power comparisons used in fast-food pricing, tracks average pizza costs in cities with the highest order volumes. The figures show clear regional differences inside the country. The lowest average price last year was recorded in Liberec at around 226 CZK. It was followed by České Budějovice with 233 CZK, Plzeň at 245 CZK, and Brno at roughly 251 CZK. The highest average price remained in Prague, where customers paid about 260 CZK per pizza. Across all countries covered by the index, prices were lower only in Hungary. The cheapest city overall was Szeged with an average price equivalent to about 207 CZK. At the opposite end stood Lillestrøm in Norway, where the converted price reached roughly 465 CZK. Higher ingredient costs, especially wheat, tomatoes and cheese, together with energy and operating expenses, have pushed prices up. Some major cities nevertheless recorded small declines, which the dataset links to stronger competition and more efficient production. Ordering...
Police in the Czech capital are searching for a young American student who vanished shortly before a planned trip back to the United States. Investigators say she never boarded the flight she intended to take from London and has not contacted relatives or friends since. According to Prague Police, the woman — identified as Angelina — was last seen on February 10 in the Prague 10 district. Her phone has been unreachable ever since, and officers have found no record of her leaving the Czech Republic by air. She had been studying at a university in the country. The last confirmed communication was with her former boyfriend, who told investigators she planned to fly to the United States that day. “She has never cut contact with family or friends for this long,” police spokesman Jan Rybanský said, adding that relatives are worried about her safety. Police describe her as about 170 centimeters tall, with medium-length black hair and brown eyes. She may have been wearing a green bomber jacket, a dark striped sweater and black trousers when she disappeared. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact police immediately. Prague is preparing for a major upgrade to its metro system, with fully automated trains set to debut on lines C and D. The City Hall has approved a new standard for metro cars, introducing driverless operation, leather seating, and a unified station design. The modernization also aims to reduce excessive advertising and improve wayfinding across the network. The update replaces outdated 2016 standards, which no longer reflected technological advances or contemporary approaches to public space. The new document ensures the smooth rollout of Line D and the replacement of trains on Line C, the city’s busiest metro line. Key Features of the New Trains All future trains will operate as fully connected units rather than separate cars, improving passenger flow and safety. The removal of the driver’s cab will allow fully autonomous operation. Passengers will benefit from retractable platforms that bridge the gap between the train and the station, making boarding easier for people with strollers, wheelchairs, or luggage. Seats will be arranged both across and along the train, using leather-like material that is easy to clean and hygienic. Additional space will be allocated for strollers, bicycles, and shopping carts. Electronic information systems will provide real-time updates, including automatic...
It has been nine years since the first modern board game café opened in Vršovice. Since 2017, Bohemia Boards & Brews has been the main spot in Prague to grab a beer and play something from a library of hundreds of games. Now, the team is finally expanding to a second location in Palmovka. This new space is a major upgrade: it has a full kitchen, a summer garden, and a focus on shorter, social games. We sat down with the founder Douglas to talk about the move and why people are still ditching their phones for board games. What made you leave corporate life for a board game café? I’d been working in marketing and branding for several years. I noticed board game cafés taking off in North America and the UK, but in Prague, there was nothing like it—no dedicated places where adults could play games while enjoying food and drinks. I knew the concept would work here. We opened as the first of our kind and were busy from day one. What’s kept Vršovice thriving, and why expand now to Palmovka? Vršovice succeeded because people genuinely love games and still want to go out. We built a...
Comic-Con Prague has begun confirming its first guests and programme details ahead of the 2026 edition, scheduled for 13–15 March at the O₂ universe. Actors Giancarlo Esposito and Iain Glen are among the main international names announced so far, joined by several figures from Czech film, television and the comic book scene. Esposito, known for roles in Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian, will attend alongside Glen, widely recognised as Jorah Mormont from Game of Thrones. Organisers say more foreign guests will be confirmed in the coming weeks. The festival will also host actors Craig Fairbrass and Vincent Regan, both connected with Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece. On the Czech side, veteran actor Jiří Lábus is expected to take part, bringing a career that spans theatre, film, television and well-known dubbing work. According to organisers, this year’s programme will again combine celebrity appearances with discussions, competitions and themed exhibitions. A special edition of the quiz show Superlov is planned, along with a discussion featuring Czech voice actors from The Vampire Diaries, offering insight into how the popular series was dubbed for local audiences. The literary section will include the launch of the Czech-Polish anthology Poslední výstřel (The...
Bolt is now entering the courier market in Prague with its new service, Bolt Send. The platform allows both private and business users to send small parcels, forgotten items, or gifts on the same day, often within minutes, all through the Bolt app. Bolt Send simplifies the delivery process. Unlike traditional courier services, it does not require users to calculate postage based on weight, size, or shape, eliminating complicated forms, phone calls to dispatch centers, or spreadsheets. Pricing is straightforward and comparable to the standard Bolt ride. Users can track their shipment in real time within the app, ensuring transparency at every step. Sending a package is simple: once an order is placed, the sender hands it to the Bolt driver, who delivers it directly to the recipient. Thanks to a broad network of partner drivers, Bolt Send promises faster delivery than conventional couriers. “Customers can now send and receive parcels quickly within the same app they already use for rides. This saves time and reduces short car trips,” said Josef Rückl, CEO of Bolt Czech Republic. “Bolt Send is part of our effort to make cities more sustainable and reduce unnecessary car use, contributing to cleaner urban environments.” The...
Prague residents have spoken: the new bridge under construction between Podolí and Zlíchov will be named Dvorecký Bridge. A public vote conducted by the city at the end of January showed a decisive preference for the geographical name, with nearly 78 percent of voters backing it over the alternative, Agnes of Bohemia Bridge. Out of 7,595 votes cast online and in person, 5,914 supported Dvorecký Bridge, while 1,680 favored Agnes of Bohemia. Only one ballot was invalid. The city will now consider the expert opinion of the Topographical Commission of the Prague City Council to ensure historical and linguistic accuracy before councilors make the final decision. Deputy Mayor Jaromír Beránek, responsible for transport, noted that 7,299 people participated online, a record turnout compared with previous polls such as the naming of the pangolin Šiška. The results closely mirrored the paper ballot submissions at city districts and registry offices, which also favored the Dvorecký name. Prague 4 and 5 residents participating in paper voting cast 296 ballots in total, with 245 supporting Dvorecký Bridge. At registry offices, the results were less one-sided: 75 votes went to Dvorecký Bridge and 43 to Agnes of Bohemia. “The working name Dvorecký Bridge has become...
Czech anti-drug investigators have charged seven foreign nationals and one Czech citizen over a scheme that allegedly moved large quantities of cocaine and other drugs from Germany into the Czech Republic. Authorities say the group transported more than 30 kilograms of cocaine, along with other substances, before arrests began earlier this year. The investigation, carried out with German police, led to the seizure of 4.8 kilograms of cocaine during an operation code-named “Nightmare.” Officers also confiscated nearly six kilograms of marijuana, methamphetamine, hashish, ketamine, MDMA mixtures, LSD and hallucinogenic mushrooms. Cash exceeding half a million Czech crowns, a vehicle, a hydraulic press used in drug preparation and a luxury watch valued at over 400,000 crowns were also taken. According to investigators, the operation relied on a repeated travel pattern between Prague and Berlin. Couriers were driven to the German capital, where they temporarily rented apartments. There they allegedly bought two to three kilograms of cocaine at a time, typically compressed into brick-sized packages, alongside cakes later used for concealment. Each cocaine batch reportedly cost about €25,000. Back in Prague, the drugs were resold at higher prices. Forensic findings suggest that 100 grams of cocaine could sell for between 100,000 and...
The Czech Republic moved higher last year in Transparency International’s global Corruption Perceptions Index, ranking 39th worldwide. That marks an improvement from 46th place the previous year, although the country still remains below the European Union average score. Transparency International evaluated perceived corruption in the public sector across 182 countries and territories. A score of 100 signals a very clean public sector, while zero reflects severe corruption. The global average slipped to 42 points last year, the first decline in more than ten years, with most countries scoring under 50. Czechia recorded 59 points out of 100, three points more than a year earlier. Analysts from Transparency International Czech Republic link the still-below-average EU performance partly to what they describe as incomplete implementation of anti-corruption measures during the previous government. Across Central Europe, Slovakia moved in the opposite direction. Its score fell to 48 points, dropping the country from 59th place to 61st. Poland ranked 52nd with 53 points, while Hungary placed 84th with 40 points, among the weakest results in the European Union. The Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — all scored higher than the Czech Republic despite joining the EU in the same 2004 enlargement round....
Prague’s St. Matthew’s Fair (Matějská pouť) will run from February 21 to April 19 at the Výstaviště Exhibition Grounds, marking the start of the spring fair season in the Czech capital. Considered the first spring fair in Prague and the most visited fair in the Czech Republic, the event combines traditional fairground entertainment with modern attractions for both children and adults. The fair occupies a large part of the exhibition complex, from the upper entrance near the tram stops and Sea World down to the lower sections of the grounds. Visitors can expect more than 100 attractions, ranging from historic rides to contemporary amusement installations. Among them are centrifuges, haunted houses, shooting galleries, classic chain carousels, swings, bouncy castles, rocking boats, racetrack rides and the well-known house of laughter. Food stands remain a central part of the experience. Alongside fast-food stalls and sweets, visitors can buy gingerbread hearts, traditionally associated with the fair and commonly taken home as souvenirs. Long History Linked to St. Matthew’s Day The tradition of the fair dates back centuries. Records preserved in the National Library show that the event has been documented since 1595. Originally linked to the celebration of St. Matthew’s Day on February...
Archaeologists have made a remarkable discovery in the Bohemia region. A treasure trove of gold, jewellery, gems, silver coins, and amber has been found, with the site covering 62 acres in total. According to the latest reports, the area is said to have been a bustling trading hub during the La Tène period, which is when tribes started to spread throughout Europe. A Treasure Trove of Jewellery and Gems The discovery was made by the Museum of Eastern Bohemia, with Archaia Praha near Hradec Králové leading the excavation. When they began to uncover the ruins, they noticed significant finds, with over 13,000 bags of artifacts present. Within the bags were iron brooches, armlets, and metal bands. There was also high-quality jewellery made out of amber, a product highly prized during the era. As gems were also uncovered, archaeologists have said that the diversity of the find alone is exceptional, and that it gives a lot of insight into the craftsmanship, wealth, and cultural foundation of the tribe. The artefacts have since been cleaned, and if you want to see them in person, they are being catalogued at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia. There’s currently a small exhibition that showcases...
