Swimming Season Begins in Prague: Which Natural Pools Are Safe?

As the swimming season kicks off in Prague, residents and visitors can rest assured that the outdoor swimming pools in the city are suitable for swimming, as they undergo regular monitoring by hygienists. The Prague City Hygienic Station recently released the first results of this year’s water quality measurements, shedding light on the safety of various natural swimming pools. Among the monitored swimming pools, namely Motol, Šeberák, Hostivař, and Džbán, as well as the concrete reservoir Divoká Šárka and two Prague biotopes – Lhotka and Radotín – hygienists have discovered reduced transparency in the waters of Šeberák, Džbán, and Hostivař. The water quality assessments are conducted by taking water samples once every two weeks, except for the Divoká Šárka concrete reservoir, which is sampled once a month. While the first measurement results from May 15th are already available, the sampling for Radotín and Lhotka biotopes will take place at a later date. To evaluate the water quality, experts examine various indicators, including sensory observations of waste and natural pollution, as well as conducting microbiological, biological, and chemical laboratory analyses. Bavarian Symphony Orchestra to Perform in Prague

The appearance of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra headed by Daniel Harding promises to be one of the highlights of the 78th edition of the Prague Spring. One of the world’s finest orchestras and its top-flight conductor will perform Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 7, whose premiere was held in Prague in 1908. The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra first performed at the Prague Spring in 1987 under conductor Sir Colin Davis. Known for its supreme interpretations, the ensemble was shaped in the years 1961–1979 by Czech conductor in exile Rafael Kubelík, who recorded the complete Mahler symphonies with the orchestra, an achievement celebrated to this day. After Kubelík’s departure Sir Colin Davis stood at the helm for almost ten years, and in the period 1993–2002 they were led by Lorin Maazel. From 2003 until his death in December 2019 the orchestra was headed by Mariss Jansons. From the 2022/23 season onwards the post of Chief Conductor will be assumed by Sir Simon Rattle, who is already working closely with the orchestra at this time. Prague to Allocate Funds for 130 Projects to Improve Environment

An impressive sum of CZK 40 million has been earmarked for initiatives focused on public green spaces, environmental education, and the preservation of endangered animal species. “The program is a crucial pillar of support for initiatives that elevate the environmental well-being of our capital city, bolster its resilience against climate change, foster awareness and engagement with pertinent issues, and provide environmental education within Prague,” said Jana Komrsková, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Climate Plan Furthermore, the program actively encourages participation from diverse groups, civic organizations, associations, and other entities. The program facilitates individual applicants in securing grants for their environmental projects in Prague. The maximum amount granted is CZK 900,000 for educational endeavors, CZK 600,000 for climate change adaptation and mitigation measures, and CZK 450,000 for other initiatives. A total of 130 projects, submitted by 81 applicants, are poised to receive approval, cumulating to CZK 40 million in funding. The program aims to bolster public green spaces, green classrooms, nature conservation, and environmental education. Metronome Prague —More than Music, it’s Now a Music & Arts Fair

The Metronome Festival has built a reputation as the veritable summer music happening in Prague by bringing internationally top-names along with the best of local talent across musical genres for four evenings and three full days in June. Beginning the 21st with two evening concerts, altogether there are 66 artists-groups on the program. Then from the 22-24th there is an accompanying program making it a Music & Arts Fair with art exhibits, installations, workshops, film and theatre productions, and special attractions. End of BeRider: Shared Electric Scooters to Disappear from Prague Streets in June

BeRider shared electric scooter service in Prague is set to come to an end in June. The operators, a subsidiary of Škoda Auto, have been unsuccessful in finding a suitable partner to ensure the service’s continued operation. The announcement was made today on the company’s official website. The shared electric scooter initiative was launched in Prague by Škoda Auto DigiLab back in 2019. Over the course of four years, customers have collectively traveled more than 4,200,000 kilometers, contributing to a significant reduction of 512 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, as reported by the company. The company’s representatives explained that while they had always aimed to expand the service to encompass more cities and increase the number of scooters available, they were unable to secure a suitable partner for sustaining its operations. They further emphasized that running services like BeRider falls outside the core business scope of Skoda Auto DigiLab, and the company will now concentrate on essential projects focused on mobility and digital services within the automotive industry. May 18, 1891: The Official Opening of the National Museum in Prague

The National Museum is an unparalleled cultural monument and it has been guarding its current place for around 130 years. The interiors of the largest museum in the Czech Republic are dominated by permanent exhibitions, which are visited by tens of thousands of visitors a year, and new ones are constantly being added. Every visitor will feel like in a real palace in the interiors of the National Museum. History of the museum building The appearance of the museum as we know it today was created at the end of the 19th century. The competition for construction took place in 1876. It was won by the design of the architect Josef Schulz, who excelled above all in the dominant elements, which was decisive. The construction of the museum took only three years and its access, including the equipped interiors, took place in the 1990s, specifically on May 18, 1891. ‘Like an Animal’: Replica of Navalny’s Cell Set Up in Prague

A replica of the cell where Alexei Navalny is currently detained will be installed in the heart of Prague, on Old Town Square. The small concrete box marked with the word SHIZO (punishment cell in Russian) in giant red letters mirrors the punishment cell where Navalny has spent more than a 150 days over the past eight months. The dimensions of the box measures 2.5 meters by 3 meters, and it will be placed adjacent to the Jan Hus monument. Inside the dimly lit box is a little sink, a toilet on the ground and a simple bed, which is folded away during the day. The unveiling of the installation is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, at 14:00, and it will be attended by Leonid Volkov, one of the leaders of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. The duration of the installation’s presence in Prague’s central square has not been determined. Similar installations have previously appeared in Paris and Berlin. Prague Plans to Replace Controversial Copy of Mánes Calendar on Astronomical Clock

Prague City Hall has announced plans to replace the “botched” copy of the Mánes calendar installed during the 2018 reconstruction of Prague’s famous astronomical clock. The unveiling of the reconstructed Old Town Clock in 2018, was accompanied by much pomp and ceremony, but later came to light that the copy of Josef Mánes’ calendar, admired by millions of tourists all year round, is a far cry from the original, which is housed in the Prague City Museum. A closer inspection revealed that the author of the copy – artist Stanislav Jirčík – took a lot of creative license in reproducing Mánes’ work. According to Milan Patka, from the Club for Old Prague, which filed a complaint about it, the changes were considerable and there was no good reason for them. In one depiction, intended to represent Virgo, the original of a girl with red hair and a distinctive ribbon is replaced with a middle-aged, modern-looking woman with grey or highlighted hair and an earring. New Tram Line in Žižkov Passed Environmental Impact Assessment

The Prague Transport Company (DPP) has successfully completed a crucial milestone in the preparations for constructing a new tram line in the former Žižkov freight station area. Following a smooth environmental impact assessment (EIA) process, the municipality has confirmed that the project will have a negligible impact on the environment. The preliminary phase of the tram line has received approval in its provisional form, featuring a single-track section and the termination of the sidings. The EIA documentation outlines the timeline for construction, which is scheduled between 2025 and 2026. The final form of the tram line will include a double-track section spanning approximately 1,300 meters, from Jana Želivského to the Nad Kapličkou stop. Additionally, a single-track line, spanning 600 meters, is proposed to reach the Sídliště Jarov stop near the Auto Jarov area. The Prague airport is poised to potentially house a casino catering to the wealthiest individuals worldwide. Two new gambling projects were introduced at a public hearing between the city of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, in the town of Tuchoměřice. The Grand Arena complex, developed by GPC Win a.s., intends to build a hotel and multifunctional hall primarily dedicated to international poker tournaments.
