In response to the war situation in Ukraine, the capital city of Prague is organizing specific assistance to the people of Ukraine. A number of non-profit organizations have joined forces and created a common website where you can learn all about required assistance, as well as being able to ask for help of any kind. Assistance Centre for Ukraine In Prague Congress Centre, Prague City Hall in cooperation with the Central Bohemian Region has put into operation an Assistance Centre for Ukraine.  The centre serves as a focal point for women and children and all other needy people who find themselves in Prague or the Central Bohemian Region while fleeing the war in Ukraine. The Assistance Centre provides comprehensive services ranging from settlement procedures, health insurance, psychological assistance or help with finding housing and work, information about the education system, etc. The centre also tries to meet requests related to, for example, the provision of specialized health care, the delivery of medicines, and many other matters. The centre is open 24 hours a day and it works in coordination with the information kiosks at Florenc and the Central Railway Station, where those arriving get initial essential information (from 10:00 to 22:00). Prague Named Most Child-Friendly City in Europe in 2022

Top child-friendly cities for holidays revealed by OVO Network data Prague has been named the best city due to the city’s access to water parks, museums and amusement parks. There are 15 per 1,000,000 residents and tourists. The average for European cities in the study is just 3, that’s a 500% difference in Prague’s favour. The Czech capital also ranks in first place for access to museums. More than Paris, Amsterdam, Milan and Berlin. There are 280 in the city, with other cities around Europe averaging 97. Prague also has some of the safest streets in Europe. The city’s crime index is 24, only Zurich, Munich and Zagreb have safer streets from the cities in the study. Fourth Warmest Winter in Prague in Nearly 250 Years

The winter just ending was the fourth warmest on record at the Clementinum weather station in central Prague since 1775, the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute said on Thursday. The average temperature recorded during the winter was 4.6 degrees Celsius; the warmest winter on record in Prague, in 2006/2007, saw an average temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius. February was a particularly warm month, according to the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. The meteorological winter refers to the period from 1 December to the end of February. The average temperature during this past winter was 2.3 degrees warmer than the reference value calculated on the basis of data from 1991 to 2020. The second warmest was the winter of 2019/2020, with an average temperature of 5.1 degrees, while the third one in 2015/16, with an average temperature of 4.9 degrees. In contrast, the coldest winter in the last 247 years was measured by meteorologists in the centre of Prague at the turn of 1829 and 1830. Prague 6 Wants to Rename Korunovační Street to Ukrainských hrdinů

The Prague 6 municipal district asked Prague City Hall to rename the street near the Russian Embassy on Monday. The current name of the street is Korunovační, but it could be renamed Ukrainských hrdinů. The request was approved by the majority of the city council, according to the mayor of the sixth district and TOP 09 MP Ondřej Kolář. “We have approved the request to rename the part of Korunovační Street along with the Russian Embassy to ‘Ukrainských hrdinů’ and the bridge between Prague 6 and Prague 7 to ‘Most Vitalije Skakuna,’ ” Kolář wrote on his Twitter account on Monday. Vitaliy Skakun is a Ukrainian soldier who died when he blew up a bridge in front of the Russian invasion army advancing on Kherson. It wouldn’t be the first name change around the Russian embassy. Czech Breweries Organize Beer Festival in Prague to Raise Money for Ukraine

The next Saturday, March 5, at the Prague Congress Center (Kongresové centrum Praha) will take place a charitable beer festival. Drink for Ukraine will be attended by more than 40 breweries from different parts of the Czech Republic. The funds will also be used for humanitarian aid for people affected by the Russian army invasion. “We, Czech brewers, want to do our best to alleviate the suffering of Ukrainian children and mothers. Come to the Congress Center on March 5 and try beer from more than 40 breweries. Every crown will be transferred to the account of the charitable organization Člověk v tísni, which sends humanitarian convoys not only to the border but also to the inner regions of Ukraine. Petřiny Looks Forward to Brand-New Square

A new square with a residential district and a supermarket will be built in Petřiny However, the locals do not like the proposal very much, they are bothered by too many concrete areas and especially the fact that there was no participation. The central square has been missing from Petřiny for many decades. The square has already been planned since the 1970’s, but it was never built.  “The current form of the Central Square of Petřiny was discussed and accepted by the city district of Prague 6. Together with the investor, we managed to find compromises since the beginning of the election period, especially regarding the reduction of buildings and create enough parking spaces, which are missing in the place,” said the Deputy Mayor of Prague 6 Jakub Stárek. “I consider it necessary to maintain a grocery store and enough commercial and non-residential premises so that the center of Petřin lives. Public Transport in Prague Is Now Free for Ukrainians

Prague authorities have abolished for citizens of Ukraine fares for public transport. The measure will last until the cancellation order).  A valid passport or ID card entitles Ukrainian passengers to free transport in Prague as well as on suburban and regional buses and trains. The free fare covers the entire PID transport system (i.e. commuter trains and buses) as well as the entire Central Bohemian region. “In cooperation with the authorities of the Central Bohemian region and railway carriers we introduce free transport to Ukrainian citizens. We want to help our Ukrainian friends as much as possible and make it easier for them to move around Prague without burdening them with excessive bureaucracy. Czech PM Recalls 1968 Soviet Invasion at Prague Anti-War Protests

About 80,000 protesters thronged Prague’s central square on Sunday to support Ukraine and the Czech prime minister told the crowd the country still remembered its own terror of Russian tanks rolling into the capital more than five decades ago. Protesters filled the 750-metre long Wenceslas Square, site of the biggest demonstrations in the country’s history, chanting and waving blue and yellow Ukrainian flags and signs with messages such as “Hands off Ukraine” and “Putin War Criminal”. The protests come as fighting in Ukraine reached a fourth day following Russia’s invasion, which Moscow calls a special operation, the biggest assault on a European state since World War Two. “Of course, I had to come here today, because one must stand up to evil,” pensioner Jindrich Synek told Reuters. “I have experienced it in this square a couple of times already.” Wenceslas Square was home to demonstrations during the 1989 Velvet Revolution that ended decades of Soviet-backed communist rule, as well as protests in 1968 when Soviet-led troops invaded communist Czechoslovakia to end reforms that upset Moscow. Professor at Prague University of Economics Refuses to Teach Russian Students

Martin Dlouhý, professor at the University of Economics in Prague is refusing to teach any Russian student as he launches his “own sanctions against Russia”. The representative of TOP 09, has launched his own sanctions against Russia when he wrote on social networks that he refused to teach Russian students. He later deleted the post. “Because of conscience and moral principles: I will not conduct Russian bachelor’s or master’s theses. I will not teach Russian students. I will not correct their tests,” he wrote on Facebook in a status that later disappeared. Dlouhý admitted the authenticity of the statement, as well as the fact that he wrote it upset by the night and morning events in Ukraine. “I was upset in the morning and wrote down my emotional status,” he said, adding that he had a lot of Russian students. “No one has to worry about being thrown out of the classroom,” he said in the afternoon.
