This Sunday: the ‘Flying Dutchman’ by Richard Wagner at State Opera

The State Opera in Prague presents Der fliegende Holländer– the opera by Richard Wagner which tells the tale of a Dutchman and his quest to find love. The opera had its grand opening on 20th January 2022 and is continuing to be shown throughout the year, with the next performance on Sunday 20th February.  The opera tells the tale of “The Flying Dutchman” who was a sea captain who once found himself struggling to round the Cape of Good Hope during a ferocious storm. He swore that he would succeed even if he had to sail until Judgment Day. After seven years, the ship enters the harbor and the Dutchman goes ashore and searches for love. Written by Richard Wager, it is claimed in his 1870 autobiography “Mein Leben” that he had been inspired to write the opera following a stormy sea crossing he made from Riga to London in July and August 1839. The opera’s original 1843 production ran more than 2 hours and 20 minutes without intermission and consisted of three acts.  The cast of the National Theatre’s production includes Joachim Goltz as The Flying Dutchman and Elizabeth Teige as Senata. Central Group Starts Redevelopment of Žižkov Freight Station

The future of the former Žižkov Freight Station (nákladové nádraží Žižkov) in Prague 3 is finally becoming clear. Central Group, together with representatives of the city and the Institute of Planning and Development (IPR), officially launched the construction of a new district in the northern part of the now unused Žižkov Freight Station (nákladové nádraží Žižkov). The developer plans to build 2,500 flats, a secondary school, two elementary schools, several kindergartens, and a park. The first block should be ready in two years. According to Central Group, the new district will be the largest project ever to be created on a brownfield site. Central Group bought the land from the original developer Discovery Group in 2016, who planned to build a giant shopping centre with offices, a hotel and several apartments. “We completely redesigned the whole project. Together with the planned construction in the former Telekom area, the park district is one-third lower than originally planned. This will logically reduce the traffic load as well,” said Dušan Kunovský, founder of Central Group. There’s a New Lookout Tower Near Prague

Near Dolní Břežany, 20km from Prague, you will find the largest Celtic town in Bohemia. At the top, there is a new cylindrical structure made of larch wood that stretches to 32 meters high. The lookout tower was designed by architect Martin Rajniš and opened to visitors just before Christmas.  The Celtic town itself is a national cultural monument and has found its place among tourists. “It is actually a very interesting village, which was inhabited from the late Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages,” says Lucie Vospělová, head of the Department of Culture.  The construction of the lookout tower began in September 2021. It consists of three wooden pillars surrounding a circular staircase. The whole structure is fastened to the ground by steel rods. It is 32 meters high, but visitors can ascend to the viewing platform, which is located at a height of 24 meters. “People can have a great view of Prague, and also at the Central Bohemian Region,” describes Vospělová. Get Ready for the Start! RunCzech is Opening Registrations for its Popular Prague Races

Finally! After two years, it is possible to register for some of the most popular races globally and the biggest in the Czech Republic. RunCzech is opening registrations for Prague Half Marathon, Volkswagen Prague Marathon with dm Family Run, Prague Relay and Birell Grand Prix. The first sporting event will be held on 2nd April, followed by the famous marathon on 8th May, relay racing on 22nd – 23rd June and the exciting night race on 10km and 5km on 3rd September. Uber in Prague Has Lowered its Fares

Despite rising inflation, and significant increases in fuel prices, Uber has leveled the bar with its direct Estonian competitor Bolt. Taking a taxi via Uber will be even more convenient than before. That’s because, from 2 pm on Monday, February 14, 2022, Uber has reduced the price for taxis booked through its app in the UberX Saver segment. The new price is a minimum of CZK 75 (it was CZK 85). For example, a ride via UberX Saver from Pařížská Street in the centre of Prague to Depot Hostivař will cost approximately CZK 198 (9.6 km for a 25 minutes ride) after this change. For a short distance, the minimum fare is now CZK 75. The price of the cheapest 30-minute ticket in Prague public transport is CZK 30, so it is economically worth it to take Uber with three people rather than public transport. The American company has thus leveled the bar with its direct Estonian competitor Bolt, which has long beaten Uber in the Bolt Economy segment with the lowest prices on the market. Generosity and goodwill spread amongst the city of Prague, as FriendShip Prague shows that a little bit of kindness can go a long way and do the world of good.  FriendShip Prague is a new organization that connects Czechs and expats together, provides support and friendship to people most in need, especially in the homeless community.  With thousands of people living rough in the streets, this non for profit organization shows compassion and friendship for those who may need it most. The cooperation between volunteers and the organization brings a helping hand, not only through donations but with guidance and support for vulnerable people.  Founder and director of FriendShip, Renni, started the organization after experiencing life-threatening surgery during her cancer treatment which made her take a step back in life and value how lucky she has been. “It was the first time I had felt real physical pain. Prague May Have a New “Circular” Metro Line

The civic movement Praha Sobě proposed the possibility of building a new metro ring line in the city. This will relieve congested areas, and facilitate commuting to the Central Bohemian Region.  Deputy Transport Minister Adam Scheinherr wants to submit a feasibility study to the board this year. “Over the next few years, the population of Prague will increase by several hundred thousand, and many more visitors will arrive in the city. Without a new basis for public transport, Prague will suffocate,” he said. “Even with the current demand, the metro line will carry about 150,000 passengers a day on the busiest sections between Smichov and Budejovice,” he added. However, the study can only be completed in 2025. And if everything goes smoothly, the city can get a permit to build the first part of the new metro line only in 2033, i.e. in 11 years. Prague Will Have a New Fleet of Trams

It has been seventeen years since the announcement of the bid for new trams in Prague. DPP is preparing a tender with nine manufacturers. In a December interview, Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr said the capital would need 186 new trams. The main reason is for the replacement of older types, and also the large expansion of the tram network in the city. New trams will be low-floor, with full-vehicle air conditioning and other equipment. “We must ensure that we have looked at all options which include our requirements and meets our extremely demanding technical requirements, and at the same time provides high comfort for passengers,” said Scheinherr. The member of the Board of Directors and the technical director of DPP – Surface Jan Šurovský, said that DPP will also be interested in elements of active and passive safety or the costs of service intervals. The nine manufacturers contacted by DPP are Alstom, CAF, Hyundai Rotem, Modertrans, Pesa, Pragoimex, Siemens, Stadler and Škoda Transportation. Prague to Begin Long-Awaited Construction of New Library

On 4 February, the Czech capital announced that the Municipal Library in Prague (MKP) will soon begin the construction of a new multifunctional building in Petřiny. The new establishment will replace the existing library building in Prague 6, which was built in the 1950s and no longer serves its purpose. Part of the building, which will be designed by architects from the monom studio and the Zavadil studio, will be a chamber hall for cultural, educational and community events and will hold the necessary equipment for so-called coworking, study or creative meetings. The library will be freely connected to the garden and there will be a terrace for outdoor seating as well as a kitchenette for preparing snacks. While the first and second floors will be dedicated to books and such meetings, the ground floor will act as a space where visitors can obtain information regarding services and events. The building will also feature a multifunctional hall on an underground level, where events such as film screenings and musical performances can be held without disturbing readers. The preparation of such a centre has dragged on for more than 10 years. The Growing Popularity of Car-Sharing in Prague 

There are now almost 1200 shared cars in the city. According to the operator of the world’s largest network of these cars, the market for car sharing in the Czech Republic is three times higher than what it used to be. Due to the pandemic, they have boosted their popularity. The Czech Republic’s biggest car-sharing company HoppyGo reported an 80 percent increase in the number of car rentals last year, while the number of registered users increased by 50 percent to over 100,000. “Part of our clients stopped using our services because they are working from home, but other clients started using the services to avoid overcrowded public transport,” said the technical director of HoppyGo. According to company estimates, the potential for car-sharing is up to three times higher than at present.
