Trolleybus Will Go to Prague Airport

The Prague Transport Company (DPP) has obtained a valid joint permit for the electrification of bus line, 119 from Veleslavín to Václav Havel Airport. They will now look for a construction company in a tender process. The construction of contact wires should begin at the end of this year. The costs are tentatively estimated at 300 million crowns. DPP spokeswoman Aneta Řehková announced on Monday. The company is now preparing to electrify other bus lines as well. “Now it is necessary to complete the property settlement of the construction and announce a public contract for its contractor. I firmly believe that we will be able to start construction at the end of this year or early next year. The construction of the entire infrastructure should take about ten to 12 months,” said DPP Technical Director Jan Šurovský. DPP will build almost 12 kilometers of overhead lines and four new substations; two of which will be at the final stops, the third will be used for trolleybus and trams to Dědina, and the last will be in the garages of Řepy. Prague May Keep Horse-Drawn Carriages in the City Center

The Prague City Hall will have to deal with the ban of horse-drawn carriages in the city center and are setting up an expert group to assess whether these will be banned permanently in the future.  This has been ongoing in the town council since last December- and there are regulations which will be introduced at the beginning of 2023 which abolish all horse-drawn carriages in the Old Town Square.  This decision was criticised by opposition representatives. They criticised the way in which the councilors approved of the change- they did this by changing the market rules which bypassed the termination of the agreement to the fiakrists. Ondřej Prokop, on the opposition, said “a two-year notice period should apply first before a ban is implemented.” The opposition also said that the document which was in favour of the ban was originally submitted directly to the council without prior discussion or deliberation- meaning that it was not done fairly. Jiří Pospíšil, an MEP, coalition representative and chairman of Prague’s TOP 09 is in favour of the ban. Hundreds of Czechs Protest Against COVID Curbs

Hundreds of Czechs massed in Prague’s Wenceslas Square on Sunday, waving flags and chanting slogans against COVID-19 restrictions, even as infections surge. Protesters mainly objected to harsher restrictions for the unvaccinated, including a ban on eating in restaurants. “The state should listen to the people’s demands. The arrangements and restrictions lead us on the road to hell,” Zuzana Vozabova who banged a drum through the protest, said. The Czech Republic reported its highest daily tally of cases on Wednesday – 54,689, and the numbers on other recent days have ranked among the highest since the start of the epidemic. Despite the soaring numbers, the government scrapped a decree last week making COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory for key professionals and over-60s to avoid “deepening fissures” in society. The centre-right ruling coalition of Prime Minister Petr Fiala has shortened quarantine and isolation times as it braced for the Omicron variant, while launching mandatory testing of employees at companies. Prague Attracted Tourists Away From Neighboring Vienna and Berlin

Last year, Prague City Tourism introduced the Stay in Prague campaign which encouraged foreign tourists to visit the city.  This was done by running digital advertising which was displayed online and in various social media channels. This ran in Google Ads, Facebook, Instagram, and even Youtube and received in total 790 million impressions during its running.  This ended up generating 8 million visitors to the campaign website. Michaela Henčlová, Brand Management Director of Prague City Tourism said “We targeted thirteen countries for this campaign, mostly in Europe – and data from this campaign show that the trend for those searching for Prague is significantly higher than it was in 2019.” There was an immediate spike in interest for foreigners visiting the city after the campaign started running in October- flight searches to Prague increased by a total of 36% (49% compared to 19% in 2019.) Prague Will Have a New Metro Station: Depo Zličín

Zličín will have a new metro station. Its appearance will be decided through an architectural competition. Prague, in cooperation with Czechdesign, are organising this competition. The results will be evaluated by a jury and should be decided by April this year. Although, the construction of the winning project is not scheduled to start until 2026. Depo Zličín will be a surface metro station. The task of the winning architect will be to create a balance between functionality and aesthetic expression. They should cooperate with artists and designers typical for the Prague metro. However, for the competition, it will not only be the design of the depot building that will be judged. It will also include the surrounding area where a P+R parking lot with 500 parking spaces is due to be built before construction begins. The Depo Zličín station will then enable passengers to transfer to public transport. The architectural firms invited to participate in the competition are; BOD architekti, DKarchitekti, IDHEA/dh architekti, Ivan Kroupa architekti, LASOVSKY JOHANSSON ARCHITECTS and PETR STOLÍN ARCHITEKT. On January 16, 1969, Jan Palach set himself on fire in Prague in protest against the August 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops. The 20-year-old university student died of his burns three days later. Palach’s funeral turned into a mass demonstration of opposition against the Soviet Union’s crushing of the liberal reforms of the Prague Spring. Prague Mayor in Favour of Floating Pool on the Vltava

Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib is asking the citizens of Prague to vote their opinion on whether a new floating pool should be built on the Vltava. So far there are 1.1k reactions to the post with a majority positive response. Hřib explains on his Facebook page that this new pool could be an “attractive and unique addition to the city bringing style and charm”.  He poses the argument that this could be a stylish addition to Náplavka area, which was recently a finalist in the 40 Best Buildings in Europe in a competition announced by the European Commission.  He explains that he is seeking financial support from the European Commission for the rejuvenation of public spaces around the city: “We already managed to negotiate 4 billion CZK which will contribute towards several projects, revitalising public spaces for the people of Prague,” says Hřib. New Prague Metro Line to Receive Construction Approval 

A geological survey has been conducted by the Prague Transport Company (DPP) on the construction of the D Metro Line. So far, this has cost the DPP a total of 1.82 billion CZK, an expensive but vital investment to the city. There are plans to implement more construction to this line in the areas from Pankrác to Olbrachtova which is waiting approval. “We have finished one stage of the planning, but are waiting for approval for the main construction by the Ministry of Transport soon,” said Adam Scheinherr, Prague Deputy Mayor. The survey took place in four locations around the city, which has been ongoing since August 2020. “This was done to make sure that there were no unexpected adjustments to be made when the project began,” said Petr Witowski, CEO of DPP.  The next area to be completed is the Pankrác area, where digging has already begun. This section will be a transfer between the C and D lines. Already, this project has cost the DPP more than expected.
