650,000 People Visited the Prague Towers Last Year

The Czech capital city is also known as the City of a Hundred Spires (‘Stověžatá Praha’). Only a few people know exactly how many towers there are in Prague; however, it is certainly over one hundred. In Prague, towers of all kinds are everywhere, even in the least expected places. The City of Prague Museum manages the six most famous and well-known of them. Last year, 649,147 visitors visited the Prague Towers, which is about four percent more year-on-year. The most visited was the Petřín Lookout Tower (Petřínská rozhledna), according to an analysis by Prague City Tourism (PCT). It attracted 242,803 visitors, about 8,587 more than last year. 176,714 people visited the mirror maze, one of the most popular family destinations in the city. The building, shaped like a small castle, houses the “Hall of Laughter”, a labyrinth of variously curved and twisted mirrors that will instantly turn you into a dwarf, a beach ball, or a beanpole. VIDEO: Police Chase Down a Bike Thief in Prague

A wild chase broke out in Jižní Město (south of Prague), on Monday, January 10, after a thief broke into a carriage house and stole a bike with GPS installed, worth 60,000 CZK. Local police chased him through the park and then down the road. The man ended up in handcuffs, had a screwdriver and a crowbar in his backpack. In his backpack, the police found broken fabs, screwdrivers, splitting pliers and a crowbar. New Book Captures the ‘Temporary Utopia’ of Prague’s Rave Scene

A new documentary book has combined images, interviews, and essays to mark the “temporary utopia” of Prague’s non-club rave scene between 2015-2020. The book named Location TBA features hundreds of images collected by a mixture of professional and amateur photographers over 300-pages. Photographs show dozens of parties including Polygon nights which were thrown at Prague’s main railway station – Praha hlavní nádraží – and Nite Vibes which would take over an abandoned nuclear bunker. Alongside the photographs are interviews with members of organisations, Polygon, Nite Vibes, Harmony and Cukr as well as night workers and frequent ravers. The essays included have been contributed by Michal Smetana, Jen Kratochvil and Jonáš Verešpej who have dived deeper into the scene’s history and social importance. The people behind Location TBA have said: “Location TBA documents the intense off-clubbing era in Prague of recent years. Czech Ministry Wants to Remove Metal Detectors and Guards at Prague Castle

Increased security at Prague Castle was promised in the wake of a scandal back in September 2015, when a group of activists managed to hang a giant pair of red boxer shorts from the Castle roof in protest at Miloš Zeman’s supposed affinity for authoritarian regimes. However, the Castle claimed that tightened security was in reality a response to the concerns over potential terrorist attacks demanding increased vigilance. Yesterday, Vít Rakušan, the interior minister, said he would ask police and security services to review measures in place at the 70,000 sq meter complex, which is the country’s most visited tourist attraction. “Prague Castle is a symbol of Czech statehood,” he tweeted. “It belongs to all of us. And we are not really all terrorists, as we may now feel when we visit it. Pedestrian Bridge Between Holešovice and Karlín to be Named “Štvanická”

Construction of Štvanická, the pedestrian footbridge connecting Prague districts Holešovice and Karlín, should begin tomorrow, January 11. Until now, the footbridge has been called with an abbreviation from the names of two city districts, ie HolKa. Designed by Marek Blanek and Petr Teje architects, the bridge pushes building technology to the limit; the use of freeze-resistant and fiber-reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) helped reduce the structural shell thickness. The new bridge would relieve traffic on some of the existing bridges, which have been overburdened and are in need of repairs. They would also greatly reduce the commuting time to reach certain parts of the city. The footbridge should replace the ferry, which now connects the bank of the Vltava River at Pražská tržnice and Rohanské nábřeží, which should stop running after the footbridge is completed. The idea of building a footbridge in this area was a part of the Prague Land-Use Plan for a long time. In 1999 an architectural competition was held to define the appearance of the footbridge. Number of Airbnb in Prague Have Fallen by Half

Almost seven thousand apartments with a total of 18,732 beds were offered last July by landlords in Prague. That is half of the apartments compared to July 2019. It emerged from the analysis, published by the Institute of Planning and Development Authority (IPR). It is no surprise that the majority the beds offered on Airbnb are located mainly in the city centre and its surroundings. Andaz, a brand of Hyatt Hotels, has completed the reconstruction of the Cukrovarnický palác, located on Senovážné náměstí. Housed in the former office building, the Sugar Palace, the hotel features 176 rooms, three food and beverage outlets, event space, a fitness centre, and a spa. The neo-baroque palace was built in 1916 for administrative purposes, and today it is a protected cultural monument. Therefore, all the steps of the reconstruction were agreed upon with the local authorities. The interiors have preserved the original doors, window frames, and stucco moldings. Prague Public Transport Having Longer Intervals

Throughout the month of January, Prague’s public transport will run according to holiday timetables, which will mean an extension of intervals, especially at peak times. The main reason is the decrease in passengers due to more people working from home during the Covid epidemic. “From today (Monday, January 3) until the end of the month, Prague’s public transport is slightly reduced by about nine percent,” said Filip Drápal, spokesperson for ROPID.
