Free Ice Skating Rink to Open at Letná Park on December 1

An original date, an afternoon with friends or nostalgia for the older generation? The outdoor ice rink will impress all generations and kinds of ice skaters. The most important thing is to have fun! On December 1, one of the most popular ice skating rinks in Prague will reopen to the public. Like last year, the entrance is for free. There will be two skating rinks on the Letná Plain this year – a large one with a size of 40 x 20 meters and a smaller children’s rink size 22 x 10 meters. The ice-skating rink and the facilities will be illuminated after dark. The cooling unit retains the rink cool even in case of the outdoor temperature of +15 degrees. The skating rink facilities include a heated tent, refreshments, ice skates rental. Guests will also have access to fast food tents with heated benches and a skating school where experienced instructors will teach beginners to feel confident on the ice. Drone Show to Take Place in the Center of Prague

On Wednesday evening, November 17, a flying drone show will take place in the center of Prague. November 17 is one of the landmark dates in modern Czech history. On October 28, 1918, an independent Czechoslovak state was declared just a few weeks before the end of World War I. On November 17, 1989, the state was, once again, independent – this time, free of Communist rule. Dozens of drones will rise into the air over the Vltava River to line up in various inscriptions and symbols of the Czech Republic. The show will start at 18:30. It will be best seen from the Bridge of the Legions (most Legií), along the embankment near the National Theater and the Jiráskův most. The main organizer is Česká spořitelna bank. Goodbye High Energy Prices: Prague to Become Energy Self-Sufficient 

In a mission to fight the sharp rise in energy prices and strengthen Prague’s energy self-sufficiency, there are new plans in place for the municipality to help with the installation of solar panels and subsidies in the capital. According to the approved climate strategy, the city’s goal is to install panels on 20,000 Prague buildings by 2030 and gain hundreds of megawatts of power- which will be made possible through the introduction of new initiatives. Soon, a new city company called the Prague Renewable Energy Community (PSOE) will be offering a subsidy for the installation of a solar panel on their roof, and another city company – Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP) – will also help with the installation under advantageous conditions. Residents in Prague can start applying from 1 December. “In the case of private individuals, they will use the Green Savings grant program, and public organizations will then be able to use money from the newly established Modernization Fund,” explained the director of the newly established organization, Jaroslav Klusák. Czech Jury Selects Final 20 Studios for the New Prague Philharmonic

The jury of the architectural competition for the new philharmonic orchestra on Prague’s Vltavská selected 15 studios that will prepare competition proposals. Five studios previously addressed the city directly, so in total, the jury will select the winner from 20 proposals next April.  Mayor Zdeněk Hřib (Pirates) added that the municipality intends to negotiate with the new Minister of Culture on the previously promised co-financing of the construction by the state. The building should stand by 2032. According to previous estimates, the whole build will total 6 billion CZK. Jury chairman and Brno’s main architect, Michal Sedláček said 115 candidates entered the competition, making it difficult to choose 15. He added 12 countries are represented in the 20 studios that will prepare designs. Five of them originate from the Czech Republic or involve Czech architects.  “I think 20 studies are really a guarantee that we will get not only a few but many very high-quality proposals,” he said. In the heart of Prague lie restaurants Cali Brothers, Burrito Loco, Agave, and Bohemia Bagel. These establishments all have one thing in common, and it’s Scott Kelly and his partner Glenn Spicker. After interviewing Scott we got some insight into the inner workings of these establishments and how they came to be. Scott always knew he wanted to be a chef and went to culinary school in New York where he worked before relocating to Los Angeles. Originally from California, he set roots in Prague “over 20 years ago” when he was on a trip through Europe. “I didn’t move here, I was just traveling,” he said, also adding “I was probably traveling for a year and a half, and just came to visit and came back and found a job,” and the rest is history. “It just clicked, everything came together,” is his reply when asked why he moved to Prague. On his first day in Prague, he landed housing and a job. If you’ve been granted a long-term or permanent residence permit in the Czech Republic this year (2021), and you aren’t an EU citizen, there’s a high probability that the duty to attend the Adaptation and Integration Course called “Welcome to the Czech Republic” applies to you. The Czech Ministry of the Interior has established this obligation for specific groups of foreigners from outside of the EU, whose residence permit came into force from January 1, 2021, or later. In Prague, the course is organized by the Integration Centre Prague (ICP), a non-profit organization. Behold, The Eye! Czech Students Built A Scenic Swing in Nebušice

On Sunday, 24 October, the Eye was officially opened in Nebušice. The original viewpoint was designed and built by students of the Seho–Poláček studio. The Eye is a viewing platform and an unconventional swing. The new viewpoint is located at the site of a historic crossroads northwest of the centre of Nebušice. The town council has restored the old dirt roads here and the new landmark on the route from Šarka to the Central Bohemian Region promises to take cyclists away from the busy town centre. “We restored the paths several years ago and they are really used a lot by cyclists, tourists and especially families with children walking around Nebušice. Prague’s Dazzling Christmas Tree This Year Will be From Liberec

The Christmas Spruce which has been chosen to light up the Old Town Square in Prague this year will be arriving from the Liberec Region. If the situation with covid-19 does not cause significant restrictions, the tree will be on display in the Old Town Square on Saturday, November 27, 2021, when the Christmas markets will also begin. The tree was grown on private land near Jablonec nad Nisou to a height of 21.5 meters, and although it is not one of the tallest trees that adorned the centre of the metropolis in the past, it is beautifully grown and evenly branched. Breaking Bread: VENUE’s Brunch Hits All the High Notes

There was a time in the not-too-distant past when brunch options in Prague were scarce. Things have since changed. Brunch is now an institution with countless possibilities found throughout the capital. The wide range of choices now available could certainly lead to debates concerning the best brunch in the city and VENUE, located in a lovely part of Old Town, has earned a spot in this discussion. VENUE began serving brunch in 2016. It is this establishment’s central focus served all day. The menu is both expansive and compact. Prague Ranked 5th of 80 Best Global Cities for Remote Workers

In a study that assesses liveability, living costs, infrastructure, and employment compliance, Prague was ranked 5th out of 80 cities around the world for remote working. How the study was conducted As part of its study, WorkMotion revealed an extensive methodology in which cities were scored out of 100, under 17 different “factors” divided into four broader categories — remote working compliance, cost of living, civic infrastructure, and liveability. For some of these “factors”, a high score is considered better while for others a lower score aids the city’s ranking. In order to account for this difference, WorkMotion revealed its score calculation method, inverting scores where low value is better and using a min-max normalization formula. “The final score was determined by calculating the sum of the weighted average score of all of the indicators,” WorkMotion added. How did Prague fare The cities were ranked on the basis of the ease of corporate compliance for employing workers remotely, the flexibility of the legal system, and availability of a remote worker visa. Prague to Innovate Waste Collection Using New Technology

Per a Facebook post released by the mayor’s office yesterday, Prague residents can expect a new “smart and gentle” way to deal with waste collection. According to the post, Mayor Zdeněk Hřib plans to equip 6000 containers with sensors to measure how full the tanks are as time passes, streamlining waste collection. This way cars can avoid unnecessarily seeking out empty bins, while full bins are exported on time. Hřib assures the changes will lead to cleaner container environments and less smog from garbage trucks since the technology aims to streamline the planned routes of these vehicles. He ensures the change will save residents a lot of money — millions a year, according to the statement on Facebook.
