Prague to Launch CZK 6 Billion Architecture Competition for its Philharmonic Building

Prague City wants to enrich its architecture with a new building for the Czech Philharmonic and Prague Symphony Orchestra. This August, Prague will hold an international architecture competition for the building which will house the Czech Philharmonic and Prague Symphony Orchestra. After the contest begins in August, the jury will evaluate the candidates and select those who will work on proposals in October. Three separate halls are envisioned for the building: a concert hall that will accommodate an audience of 1,800 people, a smaller hall for 700 spectators, and a multi-purpose hall with a 500-seat capacity. Representative of the capital Jan Čižinský commented on the project, noting that it will completely transform the area. Furthermore, he stressed how crucial it is for designs to take the surroundings into consideration. In other words, designs must ensure that the building is easily accessible to pedestrians and is connected to both urban and suburban public transport. First Gold Vending Machine in Prague Installed in Nový Smíchov Shopping Mall

Can you spare some change, like a few hundred? I’d like to buy some gold from a vending machine. It sounds like a tacky casino attraction, but a gold vending machine that’s been set up at Nový Smíchov shopping mall real thing. The gold vending machine dispenses bars and coins, making it the first place to boast a permanent ATM for bullion. Called “Au-tomat”, it is owned by Gold.plus and offers small bars of one, ten, or 31.1 grams (troy ounce) locally. A New Bridge Will Be Built in Prague, Connecting Zlíchov and Dvorce

By the end of the summer, the Prague mayor’s office will announce a tender for a construction company that will build a new bridge across the Vltava, connecting Zlíchov and Dvorce (Prague 5 and Prague 4). The contract value is CZK 972 million.  The proposed Dvorecký most (Dvorecký Bridge) would fill the substantial gap between Barrandovský most (Barrandov Bridge) and Palackého most (Palacký Bridge). Seven design proposals advanced to the second round of selection, and a commission selected the concept by design studios Tubes and Atelier 6. The new bridge will be used by public transport vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, but not cars. The project includes the design of a new Dvorecký most tram stop. The Prague 4 side of the bridge is planned next to Žluté lázně by Jeremenkova Street. The Prague 5 side will be near the Lihovar tram stop. Dvorecký most should cost roughly CZK 1 billion. Prague Councilors Approved the Construction of Metro D

Prague Council approved the construction of the metro line D in the section Pankrác – Nové Dvory. Construction will take eight years and it should cost CZK 52 billion, suggests a document discussed by Prague city’s municipal Transport Committee. The city authorities are also counting on subsidies from European funds. The Metro D line has faced numerous delays. Construction was originally supposed to start in 2010. There was a petition in 2016 to change the approved designs for the stations between Pankrác to Písnice because the designs are already outdated, and do not reflect current trends in mass transit. Metro D will connect the city center to neighborhoods in the southern part of the city that now has poor public transportation options. The trains will be driverless. Artists Vladimír Kopecký, Jiří Černický and Stanislav Kolíbal will design the new Metro D stations Nádraží Krč, Nemocnice Krč and Nové Dvory. “Our goal is to make every station a place of high artistic value where Prague citizens will feel comfortable. Liechtenstein Palace Reopens its Doors to the Public

The Liechtenstein Palace in Prague opened its doors to the public on Saturday, June 5, after a break of several months, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first guided tour in Liechtenstein Palace will take place at 9 am and the last at 4 pm on Saturday. Respirators are compulsory. The Liechtenstein Palace was built on the grounds of five city houses in 1591 and rebuilt in Classical style in the 18th century. The princely family of Lichtensteins gradually lost interest in the Palace and sold it to the Earl of Ledebour. Later on, the Palace housed many different institutions, until finally in the 1980’s it was acquired by the Academy of Musical Arts. It’s generally used for representative purposes by The Office of the Government of the Czech Republic. On the second floor, there are apartments, which stayed, for example, Spanish king Juan Carlos with his wife Sofie, British queen Elisabeth II, Japanese emperor Akihito with Empress Michiko.
