High-Capacity Vaccination Center Opens in Prague

The vaccination centre at Prague’s O2 Arena complex is to be a key component in ramping up inoculations. The largest COVID-19 vaccination centre in the Czech Republic started its operations this morning. It will be open daily from 08:00 to 20:00. On the first day, about a thousand people will be vaccinated, the capacity will gradually increase. At maximum workload, healthcare staff will be able to administer the vaccine to 7,000 people a day. People can register for vaccinations at O2 Universum from the beginning of last week. According to Jitka Zinke, a spokeswoman at the Central Military Hospital in Prague (UVN), about 1,000 people were registered on Monday, and about 2,000 on Tuesday. “Negotiations for the lease of the O2 Universum for a large-scale vaccination centre were initiated on the basis of an offer of free rent, and therefore for a symbolic amount of CZK 1,000 for the entire duration of the lease, which the O2 universum complied with. Around 30 Communists Commemorated Labour Day in Prague

Around three dozen communists commemorated Labour Day this morning on Střelecký Island. The president and vice-president of the Prague Communist Party, Marta Semelová and Petr Šimůnek, spoke briefly at the memorial plaque – recollecting the events of the 1st Labour Day celebration on May 1, 1890. On the other hand, counter-protesters also showed up at the scene, equipped with banners with slogans saying “Communist Party of Pure Evil” and “Totalitarianism Never Again!”. However, the protest was relatively peaceful, even with the anti-Communist messages. In other related events, the Communists party in Brno on Moravské náměstí, called on the general public to vote left in the parliamentary elections in Fall. There were about 100 members on the scene and a no-show from any opposing parties. Due to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions, attendees were obliged to gather in small numbers and did not celebrate their traditional May Day events. Cardinal Duka is Under Investigation by Police for Hosting a Rooftop Party

Prague Police are currently investigating an illegal party that took place Tuesday evening. The unlawful gathering allegedly took place on the rooftop of the Archbishop’s palace in Hradčanské Square and is believed to be hosted by Cardinal Duka. The rooftop party was believed to have lasted until one in the morning and attended by notable figures besides Cardinal Duka like his secretary Vojtěch Mátl, Martin Baláž the head of the Protection of the President and Zdeněk Bergman, head of the Prague-Venice company (Pražské Benátky s.r.o.) that ferries tourists along the Vltava. In addition to the gathering being illegal, none of the attendees were seen wearing masks or respirators during the festivities. Jan Rybansky a spokesman for Prague Police stated, “We learned about the event that took place on Hradčanské náměstí on Tuesday evening from the media today. We’re already investigating the matter. Thousands of Czechs Rally Against President Zeman Over Russia Views

About 10,000 Czechs rallied against President Milos Zeman in central Prague on Thursday, calling for his removal from office for what they say are pro-Russian views that have no place in a European Union nation. The rally in Wenceslas Square followed Zeman’s suggestion last Sunday that Russia was not necessarily behind a 2014 ammunition dump blast in the Czech Republic that killed two people and sparked a row between Prague and Moscow. Prague Joins Forces to Support Inbound Tourism Resumption

Representatives of Prague Airport, CzechTourism and Prague City Tourism have signed a Memorandum on a long-term joint approach to the resumption and expansion of inbound tourism to Prague and the Czech Republic. It is tourism that the parties involved see as one of the preconditions for both economic recovery post the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic growth. The co-operation also seeks to promote the development and support of sustainable tourism, which will contribute to the positive development of Prague and other regions of the Czech Republic without negatively interfering with everyday life in tourist-exposed places, such as the capital city centre.    “Tourism and related industries are by far the most affected by the long-lasting COVID-19 crisis. Art Spotlight: Beautiful Installation at Třešňovka Park

Třešňovka Park in Prague 9 has been ornamented with a whimsical yet simple art installation. It was installed on April 16 and will stay in place until May 2. The art installation consists of a long white fabric that has been hung on the tree’s branches, connecting them and flowing from one tree to another. The white fabric supposedly embodies and represents transient energy and movement – something fleeting and temporary. They are supposed to stand in contrast to the permanent and solid nature of the trees. The symbolism is quite abstract and deep, but the display itself does add quite a charm to the orchard. “The fabric is dragged with it completely without purpose, moving gracefully and randomly through space, as we do when we walk past through it.” commented its author Tomáš Kodet. The Story of “Operation Anthropoid” Comes to Life on a Wall in Prague

A new mural is being created in Prague’s Libeň district, where the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich –  the commander of the Reich Main Security Office and acting governor of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia – took place on 27 May 1942. The art project is portrayed by architecture student Jakub Marek. The mural – a combination of comics and graffiti – will be completed in the coming weeks and ceremoniously unveiled on May 22, 2021, said to ČTK the spokesman of Prague 8, Martin Šalek. “The unsightly concrete wall that undermines the surroundings of Vychovatelna street will soon turn into something completely new,” added Prague 8 councilor Michal Švarc. Planned by British special operations and supported by the Czechoslovak government-in-exile, the preparation for Heydrich’s assassination called Operation Anthropoid involved officers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš as the major players. Wallenstein Garden Reopened to the Public

The Crisis Headquarters of the Czech Senate has decided to reopen the magnificent Wallenstein garden to the general public. The garden is open daily from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Visitors were reminded of the need to comply with all current quarantine regulations, including wearing a face mask regime and keep the social distance. Built together with the palace in 1623 – 1630 the garden is one of the finest examples of the early Baroque in Prague. This strictly geometrically designed garden was created in parallel with the construction of the Palace. At first sight, one’s eyes are drawn to the massive sala pavilion, which at the time of its construction was unprecedented, and an artificial cave with stalactites (grotto). A part of the garden is reserved for an artificial pond with an islet, which was used for boat rides. On the islet, there is a copy of a marble fountain with statues of Hercules and the Nayades by Adriaen de Vries. The pond was used for experiments with a steamship by the inventor Josef Božek in 1816. Czech Interior Ministry Building Evacuated in Prague After Bomb Threat

The incident was reported just several hours before Minister of the Interior Jan Hamacek was expected to announce changes in the Cabinet, presenting a replacement for Deputy Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek, who became foreign minister last week. “Due to an anonymous bomb threat, we are currently evacuating the building of the Ministry of the Interior in Letná.
